Re: Major League Soccer Stadium in Minneapolis
Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk reiterated his opposition to a new The MLS stadium. https://twitter.com/patricktcondon/status/580801358573371392?s=09 https://twitter.com/patricktcondon/status/580801040615804928?s=09 McGuire says they haven't figured out if a public component will be necessary. Re: Major League Soccer in Minneapolis
The MLS tries to copy European stuff all the time. There is nothing royal about 'Real Salt Lake'. Its just marketing. Ugh. As a Spanish-American who was raised following La Liga rather than MLS, that one drives me NUTS. This might seem incomprehensible to Americans, but Chelsea (and just about ever...

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image
And it's not like Minnesota doesn't have an unusually well-known and basically accurate cultural identity -- hockey, Scandinavians No, no, no, no and no. We are much more German than Scandinavian. So no, that isn't an accurate cultural identity at all. It's *part* of our identity but it isn't even ...

Good question. I think maybe Vagueperson meant WILL they still use it with the 94 bridge closed. In which case I have no idea.

Re: Ayd Mill Road
Eh. The greenway runs through dense shopping and residential districts. The Dinkytown trench serves a large semi-captive biking community. Ayd Mill would just mean fighting the rail road so that we can draw a diagonal. It doesn't seem worth it.

Again, I didn't state anything about Target. Fine. Different, related question more specifically to do with what you said. http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2015/02/mark-dayton-minnesota-governor-profile-scott-walker The disaster Dayton's GOP rivals predicted never happened. Two years after the t...

Re: Ayd Mill Road
I don't like to wade into this mess very often, in part because I've seen how it takes over discussions of unrelated issues in this area ALL THE TIME. That said... What's the point of the linear park/bike path idea? I mean, I love biking. I love walking. They're my primary summer/winter means of tra...

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image
What should Minneapolis have done differently to keep Target from restructuring and laying off thousands of employees? Typical It's a valid question. I don't think the negligible amount of time anyone in local government has spend pushing Midwest vs North is really to blame for... anything ....

For what it's worth, here in St. Paul's portion of the internet Citizens for a Better Snelling Avenue has come out in favor of historical preservation generally but against the way Curtis has handled Colfax. One more group of preservationists put off by the badcrazy.

http://www.twincities.com/localnews/ci_27562371/st-paul-cheese-shop-readies-next-course-meat One thing that's driven me crazy for YEARS is the lack of decent butcher shops (steak-and-brat shops don't count, sorry Widmer's). in St. Paul, and Minneapolis for that matter. So this has me a little bit ec...

Re: "The Miracle of Mpls", Local Responses & Racial Disparit
What this comes down to is that you've abrogated to yourself the right to decide whether other people are allowed to be offended by terminology that you don't personally find offensive. No, what it comes down to is that I haven't unilaterally ceded that right to them. Neither have you, by the way -...

Re: "The Miracle of Mpls", Local Responses & Racial Disparit
Language is an overarching framework that all social interaction takes place in. Its structures affect how we communicate and interact with each other and the environment. This is well-established fact. So at the end of the day, what words we choose very definitely matter when we're talking about po...

Off-topic, but as I read it, that spat is more about Harris championing a literal war on particular kinds of, in essence, thought crimes. Which is ironic given how he's framing the Greenwald (who is, admittedly, an absolute ass) and Aslan response.

In the same way that some turn off when they see "white privilege" and the like, I stop reading when people start using "political correctness" unironically.

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image
As to your point of white people doing better here than in other places, that may be true but there's something that's holding people of color back. If white people are doing better here, people of color should be too. If they aren't, that means there are some obstacles here that don't exist in oth...
