Re: City Club Apartments - 1000 Marquette Ave (Handicraft Building)

I think Minnesota winters are going to be the death of micro apartments in Minneapolis. The city as your living room doesn't really work in our climate. People are going to get crazy cabin fever in those places. My guess is that at the end of the day, the only viable market for apartments like these...

Re: Uptown General Topics & Development Map

I'm hoping Ackerberg builds something better than Mozaic I and II on the Calhoun Square site. He seems to have a bad habit of dreaming big and then building Bloomington office park caliber buildings when his dreams fall through. Mozaic I was garbage from the get go but Mozaic II was supposed to be a...

Re: Minneapolis Mayoral Election 2017

Isn't citywide upzoning a signature project? In practical terms it will do more than a park. It is the most radical thing Minneapolis government has done in decades, no other big city in the US is doing it.

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

This "victory" means that we will probably never have useful rail transit in the southwestern quarter of the city. It will be interesting to see if a suburban commuter line is as successful as the two urban lines we have built. My guess is that this line will be a modest success at best. H...

Re: The Walkway - (1312 West Lake Street)

I've been in there a few times. It seemed to me that most of the luxury finishes in the building are just cheap, flimsy veneer and are already aging poorly.

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

Wow! It's worse in just about every way! Goes to show you that democracy is still accessible to wealthy landowners just like the founding fathers wanted. The plan is still a huge improvement over the status quo, but it's disappointing to see concessions being made entirely in the regressive suburba...

Re: 1202 4th St SE

Quarter block but it's still a horrible project so far. 300+ beds but chalked full of amenities (waaay too many). This should have retail and just a basic lobby. We're trying to get cheaper houses here all. They are replacing a significant chunk of naturally occurring affordable housing with someth...

I'm not sure this in an improvement. They are removing fine grained urbanism and replacing it with a half block project.

Re: Southside - General Topics

Generally the size of the menu is driven by sales volume. A small place can't afford to have a large menu because they won't go through each prepped and purchased item fast enough to keep it fresh. Strategically, for the chef, it is a question of having maybe 250 ingredients and going through each b...

Re: Nicollet Mall

What really gets me is that the City (planners, Planning Commissioners, City Council) probably already knew all of these lessons in the late 90s when these buildings were being designed. I'm pretty sure people knew about good urbanism and storefronts before the 2010s, but these 3 buildings still go...

Yeah, Kader was the other one I was thinking about voting for. I get the impression that either her or Fateh would be great representatives. I am having a hard time narrowing it down between the two.

Re: Harlem Irving and CA Ventures - 240 Hennepin Ave - 18-20 stories

A lot of the Victorian ornamentation wasn't well suited to our climate. A friend of mine was almost hit by a several ton piece of the facade that fell off the building next to It's Greek To Me, in Lynlake in the early '90s. The building was torn down soon after. I know that this has happened several...

Re: US Congress and MN House Elections 2018

Does anyone have any thoughts on House District 62A? I imagine a lot of posters here live in it. With Karen Clark retiring it is wide open. I'm trying to figure out who I should vote for in the primary. A lot of the DFL candidates look appealing on paper but right now I am leaning towards Omar Fateh...

Re: Gateway Tower (RBC Plaza Jr.) - 30 stories - 458'

I think part of the problem is that Duval gave us a really pretty picture, and that set the bar for what we expected here. But that was never going to get built. It was a publicity stunt. Duval isn't a developer of projects like this. The real demand for space at this location is obviously far less ...

Re: Gateway Tower (RBC Plaza Jr.) - 30 stories - 458'

Is it possible that the city (and internet posters) have overestimated how "iconic" this intersection really is? This has been a vacant lot for decades. The lot across the street is vacant. Kitty corner was an abandoned car dealership and then people were angry when the project that went i...

Re: City living trends and predictions

On the subject of ridesharing, it is important to remember that Uber and Lyft have never turned a profit and are not close to turning a profit. Currently they are using venture capital to subsidize cheap rides. That probably isn't a viable long term business strategy. Also they are using the indepen...

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

It is possible that fourplexes everywhere was never the ultimate goal, but rather an aggressive proposal that would allow their real goal to be presented as the compromise. Probably upzoning along transit corridors and arterials and a weakening of parking requirements.
