I do not think that word means what you think it means...
It could if they decide to take inspiration from something like Dore Alley.

their historical claim to their homeland I'm sorry, but this phrase made me break out into laughter. I'm in agreement with everyone else as to what the goal is, and find the discussion to be interesting, but the phrase "their historical claim to their homeland" immediately brings up connotations of...

Re: Lake Calhoun

I'm not arguing that we shouldn't change the name of the lake -- just that I'm utterly unconvinced by the process that seems to have brought us to a predetermined result that's not supported by much besides the advocacy of a few apparently well-connected activists. Well-connected? As in people who ...

Re: Lake Calhoun

So how do you say an M, N and E next to each other without it being two syllables? Honestly trying to figure this out. Even slurring them together I get mn-e-a-pol-is. Which is a different five, but still five. There is a not a lot of information on the internet about pronouncing Dakota words. Bde ...

Re: Lake Calhoun

Furthermore, you can't legitimately argue that this area (Minneapolis-St. Paul) was occupied for a "relatively short period of time" when there are two rather spiritual and significant places for the Dakota Oyate in our metro (St. Anthony Falls and Bdote at Fort Snelling). Hennepin Ave follows a Dak...

Re: Lake Calhoun

Per the Strib article I linked to, the evidence that this is a restoration seems thin at best. The Strib article you linked could be summed as follows: "Dakota band, historian, and activist describe historic ties to area; unnamed source questions said ties." The Anishinaabe presence in the northern...

Re: Lake Calhoun

Concerning the name Maka Ska we should be addressing it as a "restoration" than a "renaming." Not only would it be a more accurate description of what Native activists and other progressives intend, but it makes for better PR.

Re: Lake Calhoun

Can anyone confirm that "Mde" and "Bde" in fact mean "Lake"? If so, "Lake Maka Ska" actually sounds pretty cool, and I could probably come around to it. It's the unpronouncable "m'day" or "bidet" that don't sit well with me. (This coming from a guy whose initial reaction was strongly against changi...

Re: Lake Calhoun

That's a bit pedantic, and in any case, the Dakota were certainly there before the Europeans or U.S. Army. Are there records of any older names? I'd be happy to learn about them. I think it's a salient point. Why should we be falling all over ourselves to name it what somebody else called it, espec...

Well... we could always just start calling the lake by its Dakota name Mde Maka Ska (White Earth Lake). We could call it the Targaryen building.

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image

As someone who grew up in Duluth, there was a huge push on Facebook to promote voting. And then there was a push by the city and Mayor Don Ness, businesses offering free goodies if you voted, etc. I had a really hard time deciding between Minneapolis and Duluth when they faced off against each othe...
