Re: Bloomington Central Station & South Loop Development

The block bounded by 24th Ave, American Blvd, 28th Ave, and Lindau Ln has had the four warehouse/office buildings on it demolished. Anyone know what the plans are for that block? I took a peek through this thread but couldn't associate anything with that area. I see that part of American Blvd was bl...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

Ramsey is trying again to get funding for a bike/ped bridge from the Northstar station across U.S. 10 (and the frontage road on the south/west side) to connect to a trail on the other side. They estimate it'll be $4.5 million plus 12-15% for engineering, and are trying to get a federal grant of $3.7...

Re: Freight Rail News and Happenings

I don't know the breakdown between private car owners using these themselves vs. either renting them out to others or having heritage preservation organizations that operate private cars for more public benefit, but I think it's a mistake to cut the service so deeply. This is threatening the 261 gro...

That explains why Tom's (shoes) moved a short distance to the northeast corner of the Central Parkway/North Garden, which one of my coworkers noticed a little while ago.

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

That vehicle was on an episode of Fully Charged in October. It's a fairly slow vehicle with a "theoretical" max speed of 40 km/h (25 mph), and they said the in-service speed was more typically in the 10-20 km/h (6-12 mph) range. Okay for a very dense place, but I suspect this particular vehicle woul...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

Yeah, the train really exercised the limits of what the Union Depot platform gate can handle. I saw someone mention that the train probably had about 1,400 people on it, which seems to pencil out. There were 6 cars on the train and there are 145 seats in most cars (a bit less in the cab cars), with ...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

There may be some tweaks to existing routes that could be made. I kind of want to see a circulator bus up in Elk River to zig-zag north and west of the station through town, but I feel the planners made a pretty fundamental error by putting the station where they did. I'm not sure how much ridership...

Re: Northern Lights Express

This thread's been silent for a while, but I'd personally be much more interested in seeing NLX service extended from Duluth to Grand Rapids, Hibbing, or Virginia up along the Iron Range. You could get to the Iron Range via Two Harbors, since tracks lead from there up to Hoyt Lakes, but that's a cir...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

I measure the distance from Target Field to Fridley as about 7.9 miles, which is normally scheduled at 19 minutes, or 25 mph, so this isn't much different. Obviously that's not great either. I guess this implies to me that they'll probably run via the Midway Subdivision, which goes through a few rai...

Re: Mall of America - Bloomington

There are other tenants in the office tower now. Some signage went up this past Monday indicating the MOA has space on floors 4 and 5, and that the City of Bloomington has some space at least on the 5th floor. I'm not sure if anything is on the 6th floor yet. Cray takes up about 2/3rds of the 7th fl...

I just tried downloading those pages using "wget", a Unix command-line tool, and the connections timed out. That makes me feel something is down completely (does the main web server proxy connections to other backend servers for certain pages?)

Re: Mall of America - Bloomington

For the office, it's basically just VIP, visitor, and overnight worker parking under the building. It can only handle up to about 20% of the employees with the way it's divided up. The hotel and office tower share a 2-level parking structure, much of which is used for hotel parking and valet service...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

Annoyingly (to me anyway), the St. Cloud Times editorial board is arguing that the $3 million test plan is fine. They do say in the title of their editorial that some threshold of success has to be defined, but they decline to take a stab at what that would be. Well, I guess it should motivate me to...
