Re: Useful research links

I just tried downloading those pages using "wget", a Unix command-line tool, and the connections timed out. That makes me feel something is down completely (does the main web server proxy connections to other backend servers for certain pages?)

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

Here are a few bullet points from page 11 of the first PDF Grant found: Automate switches and signal sidings Install crossover switches Extend existing sidings Reconfigure track alignment to improve operations That's still pretty vague, though. I would expect most of the line to have good signaling ...

Re: Mall of America - Bloomington

For the office, it's basically just VIP, visitor, and overnight worker parking under the building. It can only handle up to about 20% of the employees with the way it's divided up. The hotel and office tower share a 2-level parking structure, much of which is used for hotel parking and valet service...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

Annoyingly (to me anyway), the St. Cloud Times editorial board is arguing that the $3 million test plan is fine. They do say in the title of their editorial that some threshold of success has to be defined, but they decline to take a stab at what that would be. Well, I guess it should motivate me to...

Re: Mall of America - Bloomington

As I mentioned in the Galtier thread, Cray's move into the office tower is finishing up now. The first regular day for employees is Monday. I've been in the building Thursday and Friday installing a computer lab that I manage there. One of the reasons I've been quiet on here is because I've been so ...

Re: Cray Plaza (née Galtier Plaza)

Cray is mostly moved out of the Galtier building at this point, though I think some trucks are still running between the sites today. Employees did final packing up on Wednesday, and most people have been working from home or taking time off for Thursday, Friday, and the weekend. I was one of the lu...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

Hmm. I was busy earlier and didn't have time to thoroughly read the article. Maybe it got updated with more details, but this is sounding less great than it did at the beginning. I knew $3 million seemed a bit low for a budget -- Northstar needed $13.2 million in support in 2015, so (potential cost ...

Re: St. Paul Restaurant News

That would make sense. Here's a year-end rundown from the PiPress, including the news that Faces Mears Park will be renamed Bistro 373 when it reopens in the spring. (The number comes from the address of 373 Sibley St, of course.) http://www.twincities.com/2016/12/29/st-paul-got-some-great-new-resta...

Re: St. Paul Restaurant News

The remodeling project for Baja Sol in the U.S. Bank building seems to be moving along pretty quickly -- I'm not sure when they'll open, but it's possible they'll be ready by the beginning of January. There's also a Freshii location opening in the Town Square building (across from Potbelly and next ...

Re: I'm on a Boat!

Viking River Cruises has pushed back their launch date to 2018, and their statements seem to be getting more vague. No ships have been built yet for the Mississippi River service.

A "sneak peek" event will be held midday tomorrow from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. There will be music from a surprise guest for the first hour, then self-guided tours for the second hour. Here's a Facebook event for it:

Looks like there are two trains there, on opposite tracks. It was probably a trick of the eyes due to the lamppost in the way.

Re: Riverview Corridor (Alternatives Analysis)

Is there any more information on what time of day they were attempting to model? Speaking as a regular route 54 rider, there's quite a lot of variation through the day, though it probably doesn't vary as wildly as some other bus routes elsewhere in the Twin Cities. One thing to take into considerati...

Re: Car Sharing / Rental (Car2Go, HourCar, etc.)

I'm pretty sure I'd commented on the fact that there was an oversupply of ForTwos in the U.S., though maybe someone else beat me to it. Does anyone know what a typical rental car's lifespan is like? I suspect it's pretty common for agencies to only keep them for about 3 years, then pawn them off ont...

The Java Express coffee shop has moved into the suite on the northwest corner of the headhouse (suite 120, i think). That's the same room that had been used several times for open houses by Ramsey County Regional Rail Authority. The coffee shop had temporarily been in the kitchen space formerly used...
