Re: Saint Paul - General Topics

Has anyone heard if something is happening at 1177 West 7th Street? It's been a vacant lot for several years (Street View showed a house in 2007, but it was gone by the next pass in 2011). I saw a skid loader just about done tearing up the grass yesterday. This is between Tavial Grill and the strip ...

Re: Bloomington Central Station & South Loop Development

Looks like the area I mentioned on the southeast corner of American Blvd and 28th Ave (8001 28th Ave S) is a Ceres / Orlean project to build a Cambria hotel with 170 rooms. It may have been mentioned in the F&C article above, but I don't have a subscription to check. The Hennepin County Property Map...

Re: Saint Paul Union Depot

The restaurant, Union Depot Bar & Grill, has been open since late June. It's operated by Kaskaid Hospitality, best known for Crave and Union in downtown Minneapolis (the City Pages article also says Cowboy Jack's, but I think they must have confused that with Burger Burger, which is next door to the...

Re: Mall of America - Bloomington

The Hallmark store is now closed (a notice had been posted in their window for a while). Are they having a general contraction? There are other general stationery stores at the mall, but I don't think any of them have very significant selections of cards. I'll have to poke at them again...

Re: Google Maps

The old on/off toggle for 3D vs. top-down 2D aerial views (accessed via the top-left menu, not to be confused with the "3D" option in the lower-right navigation thingy) has been changed so it is now called "Globe". It's good that there aren't two different "3D" toggles anymore, but I find the "Globe...

Here's a Streetfilms video on the "superblock" system they've started implementing in a couple parts of the city, repurposing most of the street space in certain neighborhoods to be for pedestrian or bicycle use, but leaving narrow lanes or shared-space treatments for car access: https://vimeo.com/2...

This building is getting close to being ready. The apartment management is offering leases starting October 1st. The color scheme on the exterior is a bit different than the other buildings in the complex, mostly gray so far rather than the earthier tones of the previous ones. https://farm2.staticfl...

Re: Mall of America Transit Station: Master Plan

Yes, but sometimes we need people around to handle the unusual transactions. I think my card is beginning to fail, for instance, and I'll eventually need to go to a store to get my balance and account transferred to a new one. I don't think people should need to go downtown for things like that.

Re: Mall of America Transit Station: Master Plan

Some signs were up when I came in this morning saying construction is set to begin August 13th. It's unfortunate that the store has been closed for so many years at this point. Maybe Metro Transit could get one of the mall tenants to be a Go-To Card retailer, such as the upcoming Walgreens. It's by ...

The InterContinental hotel has had its small surface parking lots and access roads paved, and lights are starting to come on in the lower levels.

Re: Mall of America Transit Station: Master Plan

I've been wondering if there's already some sort of extra tax at the mall that I've been previously unaware of, or if it's just something the mall imposes on itself (probably the latter). People who work at the mall can often get a 10-15% discount, which usually means taking an inflated price down t...

Re: Bloomington Central Station & South Loop Development

There's been some construction activity in the overflow lot south of the Embassy Suites on the northeast corner of American Boulevard and 34th Ave. I suppose they might just be paving it, though it would be nice if there was a new building going in to make better use of the LRT station there... Re: Bloomington Central Station & South Loop Development

The block bounded by 24th Ave, American Blvd, 28th Ave, and Lindau Ln has had the four warehouse/office buildings on it demolished. Anyone know what the plans are for that block? I took a peek through this thread but couldn't associate anything with that area. I see that part of American Blvd was bl...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

Ramsey is trying again to get funding for a bike/ped bridge from the Northstar station across U.S. 10 (and the frontage road on the south/west side) to connect to a trail on the other side. They estimate it'll be $4.5 million plus 12-15% for engineering, and are trying to get a federal grant of $3.7...

Re: Freight Rail News and Happenings

I don't know the breakdown between private car owners using these themselves vs. either renting them out to others or having heritage preservation organizations that operate private cars for more public benefit, but I think it's a mistake to cut the service so deeply. This is threatening the 261 gro...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

That vehicle was on an episode of Fully Charged in October. It's a fairly slow vehicle with a "theoretical" max speed of 40 km/h (25 mph), and they said the in-service speed was more typically in the 10-20 km/h (6-12 mph) range. Okay for a very dense place, but I suspect this particular vehicle woul...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

Yeah, the train really exercised the limits of what the Union Depot platform gate can handle. I saw someone mention that the train probably had about 1,400 people on it, which seems to pencil out. There were 6 cars on the train and there are 145 seats in most cars (a bit less in the cab cars), with ...
