Re: Calhoun Towers - 3430 List Place (2x 269' - 22 stories)
According to the renderings everyone will drive Teslas or Bugattis at the new Calhoun Towers. Residents should have no problem merging onto Excelsior without a signal with that kind of horsepower.

Re: Thrivent's Surface Parking Lots
Minneapolis is on the verge of a housing crisis and we're proposing building a six-story apartment building around a parking garage in the center of Downtown Minneapolis... Housing crisis? What on earth are you talking about? Minneapolis has less than a 2% annual growth rate. 6-story apartment buil...

Re: Thrivent's Surface Parking Lots
And this is why the city should consider purchasing the poorest uses of land downtown and running the bid process themselves. It's expensive upfront, but the potentially lost property tax from a junk building (and lost potential residents/income tax/sales tax etc) adds up over thirty years. They ca...

Re: Thrivent's Surface Parking Lots
Thrivent doesn't pay zero, it's an employee benefit that could otherwise be spent on salary. There's a lot of arguments about under-taxing private parking structures, and I agree with most of them. My point isn't about Thrivent though, it's about parking supply in downtown in general. Parking is sub...

Re: Thrivent's Surface Parking Lots
This project looks like it checks a lot of boxes, including extending the heart of downtown further east, replacing some of the parking being lost from the office consolidation project, adds more downtown housing and it sounds like it might be a bit larger when finalized. A big win. This is a lot i...

Re: Thrivent's Surface Parking Lots
No, try again. That should be the city's response to this turd of a proposal. If they are going to insist on the 600 park spots they city should insist that apartments cover the entire exterior at a minimum if not higher and a decent amount should be Section 8/low income/workforce housing. Along wi...

Re: Thrivent's Surface Parking Lots
It's a real shame they aren't building a 1500 ft. Renzo Piano designed LEED Platinum affordable housing only super-tall with street level retail for craft breweries and bike shops and no parking or skyway access on such an wonderful 1/2 block parcel. Just like there's a missing middle between a sin...

Re: 420 E Hennepin Ave
It's not about the style. It's principle. Should an entire area be built by a singular firm in a small era ? This isn't a small town. I don't see a problem with using a single firm for an area. The west side of Nicollet Mall from 8th-11th street is all Ellerbe Becket and I would argue that it's one...

Re: Stadium Parking Ramp Development Site
Considering how great the Millwright Building's design is, I thought Ryan was starting to really step it up in this area. However, I will be happy if almost anything gets built here rather than having the eyesore parking ramp front yard like at the Guthrie. I do not work in corporate real estate, bu...

Re: 365 Nicollet - (Opus Ritz block)
Parking podiums have the obvious benefit of creating inexpensive parking, relative to underground, and elevating residences. This is a clear win, win. On top of this, they also have created large amenity decks for tenants at a lot of developments. Considering that in many cases the ground level stil...

That's fascinating. The little I know about the Amish is from American Experience on PBS. It's certainly curious what heuristic allows for them to ride on trains with 21st century technology, but not drive a Model T.

Re: Zip Rail to Rochester
I'm slightly biased because like Mulad, I've grown up in the area, but connecting towns like Cannon Falls (lived there), Zumbrota (lived there), and Pine Island (parents worked there) could be nice. Those are all 3 small towns with relatively intact downtowns and could easily support some form of c...

The purpose and need document is very clear, the long term point of this line is to connect the Twin Cities to the rapidly expanding Mayo Clinic. It even calls out that 70% of all visitors to Rochester are there to visit the Mayo Clinic.

Re: Zip Rail to Rochester
1. If that were true, it would be bad for Rochester (one horse town) and for ZipRail (one horse demand) 2. If that were true, Mpls/SPUD still makes more sense than MSP since a majority of Mayo's Rochester patients and guests are from the midwest. 3. Luckily, the job numbers and the transportation n...

^Very much so... going to MSP would be like Kenilworth, since it would spend more money for worse outcomes. Worse outcomes??? MSP is by far the largest multimodal center in Minnesota. 66 times as many passengers fly into MSP as ride on the entire Empire Builder's 2200 mile route. More people work i...

Re: Zip Rail to Rochester
Running it to the airport directly isn't a good idea. It's not about the romance of stopping at an historic railway station, its about the cost-efficiency of stopping at an existing railway station, with existing railway access, instead of having to build an entirely new rail corridor up to the air...

Re: Rush Line Corridor (Alternatives Analysis)
Missing the Maplewood Mall Park & Ride by a few blocks isn't too bad. Most of the buses leaving that Park & Ride are destined for Downtown Minneapolis (Route 270). These riders certainly have no interest in going to St. Paul. Anyway, all of the services could easily stop at both. Also, a sta...
