Re: Rochester

So UMR is joining the anti-place ranks of Mayo in buying property and turning it into unactivated and unused plazas (at best) or surface parking.

Re: Nicollet-Central Streetcar

Sort of ironic that the Leamington hotel was demolished for a never-used-as-intended bus layover facility, no?

Re: Tunnels!

Yep, business travelers take the easy option when expensing the travel. I had a meeting with a patent lawyer from my company who was in town last Thursday, and later that day we ran into each other walking towards the Blue Line platform. He was taking the Blue Line to MSP because it was just as easy...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

And there's a huge amount of transit service in the 3/4 mi corridor between Nicollet and Chicago, at least north of 46th St.: 18 hi-freq, Orange Line, 11 hi-freq soon, 5 hi-freq and D-Line soon. Meanwhile it's then a 1/2 mi to Bloomington where you're lucky to get a bus more than every 30 min south ...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

I think it'd be worth a look to through-run the C-Line down Cedar Avenue all the way to the Mall. Yes pllllease! There is sort of a transit desert between Chicago and Hiawatha Aves, especially south of 38th St. The 14 on Bloomington is slow but relatively frequent north of 38th St where it branches...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

Agreed, with the possible exception of Midtown Corridor. But with dedicated ROW and likely built to accommodate larger LRVs, Midtown Corridor would functionally be more LRT than streetcar. So the point stands!

Re: Tunnels!

Isn't that what taxis or jitneys would excel at, on the existing Kennedy Expressway, assuming congestion pricing effectively ensured high speeds?

Re: Tunnels!

Getting back (a little closer) to reality, it seems like the best case for upgrading connectivity in Chicago would be a combination of: - Tunneling to allow heavy rail through-routing through the Loop, e.g. - Connecting Millenium Station and/or LaSalle St Station to Ogilvie Transportation Center - E...

This is totally the APM or Monorail of the 2020s... If this gets built, then a generation later there will be an impossible task of keeping vehicles going or finding new vehicles. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vought_Airtrans https://www.wired.com/2013/10/minnesota-zoo-monorail/ https://en.wikipedia...

Re: Tunnels!

Wouldn't it be far cheaper to simply take out the two inner lanes of the Kennedy Expressway and convert that space into express tracks?

Re: City of Minneapolis Office Building - 501 4th Ave S - 11 stories / 171'

A lane of traffic is closed in front of the parking ramp on 4th Ave, and it appears there may be other signage placed to block the ramp. Yet the ramp looked open. Will demo be soon? I don't see a demo permit yet. http://apps.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/PIApp/InspectionPermitsRpt.aspx?Year=2018&Action=Show&...

Re: Thrivent Headquarters Block - 6th St and Portland Ave

I thought I saw some sort of backhoe in the NE corner of the lot digging away on Wednesday afternoon. Anyways, I'm not wild about the giant alleyway through the middle of the block. These are becoming way too common, and they dilute the already miniscule street-activating presence of downtown land u...

I wonder if this could be reviving a Century Plaza / convention center development.

Also, I've long thought this parcel presented an opportunity to connect 7th St NE to 8th St SE at a single non-skewed signalized intersection a full block up from the Hennepin/1st Ave NE mess.

Re: Northeast and Southeast Minneapolis - General Topics

That strip of land is likely what had to be condemned at some point for the embankment for the Central Ave bridge over the railroad tracks. I bet MnDOT would sell it if there was some sort of agreement on new retaining to replace the embankment, but that sounds a lot more complex than a simple sale ...

Re: Metro Transit Service Improvement Plan 2014

Why not complete the loop for Route 2? The existing eastbound/westbound designations already don't make sense for 1/3+ of the route. Change it to clockwise / counterclockwise. Extend from CenHenn to North Loop via Plymouth or Broadway, and extend the Hennepin segment north through Loring Park. Event...
