Re: 2019-2020 MN Legislative Session / Budget / Bonding

I went to a Transportation and Transit forum with MAK and Slavik on the speaker panel this morning, and MAK said that was the intent - that the gas tax would give transportation a dedicated source of funding separate from the general fund, because when you have a recession, the whole general fund go...

Re: Gold Line BRT (Gateway Corridor)

Well, y'know, it wouldn't be LRT on rubber tires if it didn't include preposterously close station spacing at the suburban terminus.

Oh man, maybe they'll clear the sidewalks while they're at it.

Re: 2019-2020 MN Legislative Session / Budget / Bonding

Remember that the existing half-cent transportation sales tax doesn't go away, and in Hennepin and Ramsey counties at least, there's no indication that anyone (except Jeff Johnson) is looking to shift it from transit to highways.

Re: 2019-2020 MN Legislative Session / Budget / Bonding

Quick reminder that the price of gas in 2008 jumped up to ~$4 a gallon ($4.68 adjusted for inflation) and stayed there all summer, with diesel even more expensive. So I don't place much credence in the "everyone will immediately go bankrupt if the gas tax raises the price of gas to the previously un...

Re: Dinkytown

Bun Mi is coming back, with a new name, to a location in Dinkytown . The article says 511 4th St SE, but since that address is A) not in Dinkytown and B) not a building with a commercial space, I suspect it's a mistake and they mean 511 14th Ave SE instead, which is a spot in the Marshall briefly o...

Re: Bike Share

I think that 10mph is the overall average speed of someone biking through an urban environment, including slowing down to stop before crossing streets, taking turns, etc. If the top speed of e-bikes is limited to 10mph, than their average speed is going to be, what, 7 or 8 mph? I do think our goal s...

Re: Bike Share

It's pretty easy to get up to 12mph or so, even on a Nice Ride (if you have a few blocks to accelerate). I think 15mph seems fine for the limit of the e-assist, since, like SurlyLHT said, they're heavy bikes (65lbs!) and aren't going to stop as quickly as a normal bike.

Actually, I would ride a train to St. Cloud twice a year, so the ridership would be overwhelming.

Re: Blue Line (Hiawatha LRT)

Interesting that American Boulevard is actually more popular than Bloomington Central. Maybe we can eventually have a conversation about closing the latter, though it'll probably have to wait until after we've managed to take the baby step of closing the original Target Field platform outside of eve...

There’s a shade under 50,000 people living in downtown Minneapolis after the city’s core added 6,325 residents in 2018, an increase of 14.5 percent.

Wow!

Re: Gateway Tower (RBC/Four Seasons) - 37 stories - 503'

I assume they're going to have it run straight across Nicollet, then take a turn into 365 Nicollet, like MNdible described, to be replaced whenever Opus finally gets their act together to build on the rest of their lot. It's not ideal, but that's exactly what's happening with the skyway between the ...

Re: North Loop Neighborhood

Solhem has been reducing parking ratios on their own at their more recent downtown/NL projects, like OX-OP and Borealis, after finding that they just couldn't manage to rent more than about .9 spaces per unit (for projects like this, I'm sure the Eleven will manage to sell every spot they build). So...

Re: North Loop Neighborhood

Ugh. The HPC, of course, is a group that takes the worst of the parking-oriented, single-family focused Neighborhood Orgs, jams them together, and gives them actual power, so they're obviously going to pass this by acclamation. I'm sure the CPC will push back, but I don't know that they're asking fo...

As much as it's preferable to walk along Washington, I've started always walking home from work along 3rd St because it's difficult and terrifying to cross Marquette at Washington during the evening rush, for that exact reason.
