Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)
Metro Transit is presenting an update on the LRT train size plans to the Met Council. Looks like 2-car service will start on weekends (unless there's a Twins or United home game) April 13th, extending to 7 days a week (except event days) with the June service change. Then, with the August service ch...

Brian Ingram is bringing a Hope Breakfast Bar and an Italian restaurant and market to NLG. I assume these will both be on the "ground"/5th St viaduct level.

Re: Northern Lights Express
My understanding is that the MnDOT Passenger Rail office is, like, three people. Not much capacity there to do multiple things at once.

Oooh, that's what they're up to in there. That'll be nice - Frgmnt's been pretty lonely on that block ever since Pivo's bold attempt to be a beer bar that closes at 8pm sharp ran out of steam.

Re: Blue Line Extension - Bottineau LRT
I've always really liked the idea someone pitched on streets.mn tenish years ago of completing the wye in Cedar-Riverside, allowing (Teal Line?) trains to go directly from the Hiawatha tracks to the Washington tracks. Allows direct connections from campus to the airport, and enables increased freque...

Re: Amtrak: Empire Builder and Borealis (TCMC)
All Aboard Minnesota has an update in their Q1 Newsletter. Still no start date, but apparently operating agreements are nearing completion. The service will be named the Borealis. Thematically appropriate if the long-term intent is to combine it with NLX once that gets going.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis - News & General Topics
I really like the idea of a rink in Gateway Park. And it might be easier to fund it there than elsewhere - as the only normal MPRB park (the riverfront stuff is a regional park, and the Commons is a whole separate district) in the Downtown West neighborhood, it's the only place that the park dedicat...

Re: Amtrak: Long-distance trains
As for the study, I'd been waiting for it to come out, but I was surprised to see three separate MSP-points south trains in addition to the restored Chicago-Seattle North Coast Hiawatha, which is in a little more advanced stage of planning - it got a $500k FRA grant from the BIL a couple months ago....

Re: Amtrak: Empire Builder and Great River (TCMC)
This is the FRA running a study for recommended long-distance train routes, which theoretically could be operated by any entity, but Amtrak is the only passenger rail organization in the US that can (relatively) easily operate on the various host railroads' tracks, and also the only one that's run a...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail
This almost reads to me like malicious compliance with the legislative directive. Appendix B clarifies that it's just an update of the pre-pandemic study from 2020, adding more St. Cloud service on top of the six daily Big Lake-Mpls roundtrips, all during peak am and pm hours, with all the rolling s...

Re: Suburban Malls and Associated Retail News
Might have been a pandemic change to all of them? I just clicked around the HyVee website, and 6-11pm seems to be the standard hours now in (outstate) MN, SD, and IA. For comparison, there's still a few 24 hour Cub Foods around, but most of them seems to be 5am to midnight.

Re: Root District - Farmers Market / Royalston Station
According to this BIHZ committee item , the modular housing factory is now slated for 1400 Washington Ave N. Seems like a better bet - still pretty central and transit accessible, but isn't a truck-heavy industrial use directly adjacent to an LRT station. On a similar note, Modist Brewing bought 301...

Walked by last night, and there's an excavator and a construction trailer on site. This might actually be breaking ground, very nearly a decade after the first proposal and 4.5 years after the revised version was pitched?

Notably, there are not four tracks at Target Field, where this very same system has two services interlining. There's storage space past the last platform, sure, but Union Depot has that too, a whole maintenance facility's worth. I'm perfectly willing to buy the junction at 5th and Cedar being chall...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail
Remember that, even though it's not moving particularly quickly, the NLX project received a big chunk of state funding last year, and includes a Foley Blvd station. The Met Council isn't going to stand up a separate project to build that for MnDOT on their own.

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure
The 1st Ave N bike lanes were parking protected for fiveish years (~2010-2015). It was an abject failure, there was pretty much always someone parked in them. I've always wondered if compliance would have been better in a part of the city where it was the same group of local residents and/or workers...
