Re: Downtown Minneapolis Restaurant News

Apparently I missed the news that Marin closed and is in the process of becoming something else. Mercy, I think it was.
Correct! And definitely noteworthy.

Re: U.S. Bank Stadium

Nah, they should have used bird safe glass from the beginning, and all new construction should as much as possible. But as far as setting food out to attract birds (and other animals?) into downtown on purpose, that makes the situation worse not better. I realize this is a lame point, but people are...

Re: U.S. Bank Stadium

So on average one bird hits the stadium every day, and sometimes it's not lethal. Not to sound insensitive, but growing up in an average 1970s house in the suburbs we had at least one bird every week or two hit our small living room window. What about them? I live downtown and can't believe how many...

Re: Minneapolis Armory

This still doesn’t say anything specific about what an activated solution should actually look like. If the car entrances on 5th St. become pedestrian entrances, events are at grade, is that even enough? Any opinion on windows or doors being cut into the wall along 5th St.?

Re: Minneapolis Armory

Did you also take note of the tire marks of cars that have crossed the tracks? A lot? Grant, I see them now--someone has been turning into and out of both of the 5th St entrances from the outside lane and crossing the tracks. So much so that the tires have stained the light rail concrete dark gray....

Re: Minneapolis Armory

Did you also take note of the tire marks of cars that have crossed the tracks? A lot? Step back a moment and realize what you're boasting. It's okay to keep a base of an amazing historical building as parking? While, it's surrounded by existing parking lots and ramps? How does that make sense? Wher...

Re: Minneapolis Armory

I walked it again. It is currently illegal for cars exiting the Armory onto 5th St to cross the tracks to turn right on 5th Ave, and that's probably not going to change. Traffic cops can wave people through legal turns out of this ramp like anywhere else when needed, and cars line up in ventilated r...

Re: Minneapolis Armory

After thinking about it, my issue is that it's adding vehicle entrances to 5th St. The biggest impediment to the LRT moving efficiently through downtown is the need to allow for vehicle turning movements across the tracks. (For example, the way westbound trains frequently stop at Marquette to allow...

Re: Minneapolis Armory

I don't post here much but feel compelled to stand up for Mobjob's question. I love almost everything Grant posts but this response felt condescending to Mobjob, whose question in my opinion (as a nearby resident) is the critical question to be asking. There is an almost hysteric rejection of the Ar...

Re: Writing Campaign

You're much better off getting involved in the process. Join your neighborhood board, get to know your councilmember personally. As for requesting certain businesses, I think you should just email them. If you have a list of businesses, perhaps forward that to the Downtown Council. The Downtown Cou...

Re: Holidazzle Market

^^^Yet another advantage the Commons has is skyway proximity. The Loring Greenway on a normal winter would not be as good of access to downtown core shopping.

It would be interesting to hear from businesses whether downtown core shopping has even declined since the Holidazzle parade stopped.

Re: New Kraus-Anderson HQ (9th St. S/5th Ave. S)

This is quite impressive. It's not going to win and design awards, but I have a feeling that this is going to have a massive impact on the neighborhood and spur even more development on the surrounding blocks. As I stated before, I wish there was a retail space on the corner of Portland and 8th. Al...

Re: New Kraus-Anderson HQ (9th St. S/5th Ave. S)

Finnegans has 3 beers on http://finnegans.org/beer/, and Dead Irish Poet sure sounds like the kind of stronger option a taproom would offer. I'm sure they will expand their own selection in the new space and could go from 3 to 6+ pretty easily. It's possible their current arrangement limits their va...

Too bad it sounds like only the first floor facade at the corner of 8th and 4th, and not the entire building. I wonder if the new patio will be on the 4th Ave side. It would be nice to see that activated and looks pretty ready to be. https://www.google.com/maps/@44.973559,-93.267629,3a,49.6y,165.07h...

Re: New House of Charity Building (7th & Park Ave S.)

Good point, but even if there is a waiting area inside the size of the new stadium, folks will and should have the right to come early, stay late, smoke, visit etc. outside. That's fine, and I really think the Park location works and will lend itself better in the long run. By the city do you mean c...

Re: New House of Charity Building (7th & Park Ave S.)

Perhaps, yes. Especially if the food center is not designed to keep crowds out of the middle of this hopeful Portland neighborhood corridor. Crowds now are relatively unnoticeable from Portland.

Re: New House of Charity Building (7th & Park Ave S.)

Planning wise it makes more sense to keep the food center next to HCMC because it blends better as a use. The 65 unit residential entrance on 7th would be near existing and future residential (and much better than fronting HCMC). That ramp isn't so imposing right there, still a decent view toward th...
