Re: Dan Patch Intercity Regional Passenger Rail

Since hell would freeze over before Kenilworth accepted regional passenger trains, I think the best bet for routing from western Minnesota is reusing the old BN Hopkins Spur that was abandoned in the 70s. But even that has challenges. Starting with the fact that there's a freeway interchange (169/E...

Re: MSP Airport

FWIW for anyone potentially interested in flying to/from New England in the future, we discovered a couple weeks ago that Southwest has options to fly between MSP and BDL (Bradley airport outside Hartford, CT) that do not require changing planes. Was quite helpful for our recent trip to Minnesota, a...

Does 11th change size as it goes through Franklin?
Yes, there's about a 5ft increase in width north of Franklin.

Re: Riverview Corridor (Alternatives Analysis)

are they just opposed to exclusive ROW light rail that would consume parking, prohibit left turns, etc.? Are they ok with mixed traffic operations in this stretch? Or are they just fundamentally opposed to any change of any kind? The impression I've gotten is the first and third. Some may be okay w...

Re: Riverview Corridor (Alternatives Analysis)

Taking a look at nate's proposal, there's one big problem: given the grades and distances necessary, Wabasha would be blocked at 5th...there's not enough distance between Cedar and Wabasha to get an LRT into a tunnel without blocking Wabasha.

Re: Minneapolis Density and Population Growth (500k, etc)

I know this is a bit of a thread necro, but regarding the original question from two years ago, here is a map the Hennepin County Library system created showing the order and date of annexations for Minneapolis. It doesn't include that weird blip in the northwest corner that apparently dates to the ...

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT) & Lake St Transit Access Project

Given that the segment lies in her district, I sent Slocum an email asking if she inserted that provision, or (if not her) knows who did. Given that I'm not a resident of that district, I doubt I'll hear back.

Re: Blake Road Corridor

Maybe someday in the future then, but the development would need to be close to the roadway, in close proximity to each other (the above-mentioned 100ft or less), and extend for a minimum of a quarter mile.

But as it exists now, Blake Rd does not meet the requirement for an "urban district".

Re: Blake Road Corridor

There's a legal requirement that, to declare it an "urban district", the adjacent property along the street must be built up with buildings in fairly close proximity (100ft or less). Blake doesn't even come close, so you can forget that.

Re: Riverview Corridor (Alternatives Analysis)

Smith is A) pretty narrow, and B) has a lot of driveway/parking ramp access to it. Only way they could potentially make it work is if they make it one-way and only put one track along it (leaving the other track along West 7th).

Re: Buses vs Rail and Cars vs Transit

I would like to disagree with that. Driving in Minneapolis sucks, which is why I walk, bike and take transit everywhere. People here like doing that and want a walkable/clean city. Get over it. I'm not the person you were disagreeing with, but I would like to counter-disagree with your notion that ...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

Have you ever been up there, Matt? There's very little that fronts onto Grand Ave (Hwy 23) itself, so on-street parking wouldn't really work. It would effectively function as a shoulder. A good chunk of the corridor lacks development immediately adjacent to the road. It should also be noted that the...

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT) & Lake St Transit Access Project

If the habit is to merge/shift as soon as possible, all a barrier is going to do is shift where that happens...you'll still have the same problem of large numbers of drivers swapping lanes in a short space.

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT) & Lake St Transit Access Project

That would really suck. It would mean more local traffic through south Minneapolis. I doubt that. As I noted above, the O-D study found that the vast majority of traffic on the ramp is continuing through the tunnel to at least 394, if not farther. If anything, this will mean some more traffic throu...

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT) & Lake St Transit Access Project

Lots to reply to here so please bear with me... Supposedly it's too burdensome for exiting traffic to get through the 31st and Lake stoplights before proceeding north along the 2 lane frontage road/high speed ramp to 28th St. On the flip side, giving traffic wanting to get to 28th their own exit cut...

Re: Hennepin Avenue Reconstruction (Washington to 12th)

So, playing hypotheticals for a second: if you were in charge of the world, where would you put the portals for a Hennepin tunnel? I can imagine finding some land in the bottleneck on the south end, but I don't see a lot of great options near the bridge. Topography and block sizes support a tunnel ...

Re: 2015 Minnesota State Rail Plan

Another thing to consider: there is more than one type of curvature when it comes to both rail and road. Not only is there the horizontal curvature, but also vertical. Vertical changes on a horizontal curve are usually referred to as superelevation.

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT) & Lake St Transit Access Project

What are pedestrian counts like along Lake St? 10ft-and-change may not seem like much, but it's still a traffic-lane equivalent, and there are plenty of sidewalks in Lower Manhattan that are that width or narrower (and even a few Midtown Manhattan) that get by okay. Regarding the proposal for southb...

Re: U.S. Highway 52

An RCI was an earlier plan...not sure when that was switched, but the interchange is a county-led project. $3.5 million is coming from MnDOT...the remainder is $5-some million, presumably from the county. Here's the county's website on the project, but there isn't really anything there on the "why" ...
