Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image

A great piece on the progressive political infrastructure built by TakeActionMN http://prospect.org/article/politics-offense-and-defense Long article comparing MN and WI. It concludes that the progressive policies of MN under Dayton have been good for the economy, while the Walker economy in WI has ...

Thanks. That part of Central is seeing a lot of positive momentum. Some small projects and ADUs in the neighborhood would be great.

Re: Northeast (and Southeast) - General Topics

Does anyone know what is happening at 26th and Central? Streetview from Sept 2014 shows a line of old buildings but the satellite images show the buildings razed.

Re: "The Miracle of Mpls", Local Responses & Racial Disparit

I bring up the classroom example because I heard that Texas had started collecting statistics on when kids were sent to the principal or had other punishment at school, and found a very stark difference between the rates for white and black kids. I'm not sure if they've made much of an effort to co...

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image

HOWEVER. One thing you can do -- and that has been done -- is poll subsidized housing residents and low-income families on the characteristics they want in a neighborhood. In the most recent poll conducted by the state housing agency, over 80 percent of residents said low crime and access to high-q...

Re: Google Maps

HELLO: I am going crazy. I need a CSV file that I can plug into Google Maps with the 2010 or 2013 Census Tract data. I can find one for the whole state, but not the seven county metro. Does any smart person know where a lowly moron like myself can file such a magical file? I looked on datafinder.or...

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image

While I think the long term trend is not good, I don't think the news is quite as dramatic as at first glance (and is worse for GreaterMN than MSP). Figure 4 shows the 20 year trend in net migration. That one shows that from 2002 onwards MN has a negative domestic migration pattern. That is not good...

Re: Upper Mississippi -- No Locks For You

ASC: A great long r*ant that articulates my same feeling of loss when I hear about industrial space in the core cities. We need a long term plan to maintain manufacturing in the core. The amount of new industrial space quoted in the article is large, yet I would expect all of that space to be one le...

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block

To bring it back to this project: is a skyway a requirement as part of the RFP? Slightly more general: Are the skyways more vigorously defended by business leaders, DT office workers, or city staff/politicians? I am honestly curious because as someone new to this particular topic. It has clearly bee...

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block

I'm sorry but I find the climate argument to be incredibly silly. Somehow everyone else in this state besides the downtown workers manages to get along with life without skyways. Everyone who lives in this city for more than a year learns how to dress for the weather. With the recent booming success...

Fascinating national metro region study of long term trends in urban poverty. Echos Orfield's work that poverty concentration is a larger problem than poverty displacement. The website has really great maps for those who don't like to read.

Re: New York City

I distrust both equally but I am more wary of government, it has the power to take your property and has access to violently assert its will upon the population legally. That's all personal philosophy though, my comment about corruptible bureaucracies was broadly inclusive. HOAs, NGOs, neighborhood...

Re: New York City

Yes they are different things. Are oligarchs more and more deciding the outcome of our government? Absolutely. Do they effectively get to make the decisions about policy. Yes. Is that fundamental to the nature of government? Absolutely not. Can government work in the interests of the people? Yes, if...

Re: New York City

There isn't an infinite supply of rich people. True, but there isn't an infinite amount of land either. Nonetheless, point taken. Build more housing where rich people want to live of the quality they desire and you should have a supply of housing for the non-wealthy who wish to be there too. That w...

I can't find it now, but Myron Orfield and the Institute on Metropolitan Opportunity did a study to see how a elected council would fare. If I remember right 3 out of the last 5 four year election cycles (not counting this one) would have been DFL controlled and the other to Republican controlled. I...

Re: New York City

The reality of certain places, such as Downtown Mpls or Manhattan in general or Central Park-adjacent in particular, is that they are insanely valuable. Valuable to whom? People of all income brackets might value highly living next to Central Park. It is only rich people, through their money in the...
