Re: Minneapolis Fiber Internet and Cable Services
I'm a little curious about this. Would the city really allow potentially up to three different competing fiber runs along the same streets (eg. USI, CenturyLink, Comcast)? Not that there's anything wrong with competition, but it seems like it'd add a fair amount of below ground physical congestion....

Also, the http://fiber.usinternet.com site does have 2.5 gbps and 5gbps pricing listed too, as well as a press release article.

USI to add 2.5 Gbps and 5 Gbps options in Q1 of 2016: http://www.so-co-it.com/post/439593/us-internet-to-launch-new-2-5-and-5-gbps-fiber-internet-service-in-q1-2016-for-minneapolis-residents.html/ No mention of pricing and http://fiber.usinternet.com isn't yet updated. Re: Minneapolis Fiber Internet and Cable Services
Unless it's an error on the map, I see USI is poking ever so slightly into Edina (south of 54th, west of Xerxes) in 2016 Phase 3. Did that require any sort of franchise agreement or council action by Edina? Out of curiosity, how does that all work? Plans to expand throughout that dense corner of ea...

Re: Minneapolis Fiber Internet and Cable Services
Recently our high-speed router/base station started acting up. The 5G signal seems to go in and out. I've found that to get something near full 100Mb/s requires a 5G connection. I'll try moving the router (it's currently in the basement) but it's odd that it just started dropping signals recently. ...

Re: Minneapolis Fiber Internet and Cable Services
Not that it's going to help you, but personally the best thing about fiber for me was the anticipation! While excruciating, it was very exhilarating. After installation the first week was full of unicorns and rainbows but then very quickly became "normal" and now I don't even give it a se...

Re: Minneapolis Fiber Internet and Cable Services
On a topic related to this, does anyone from USI know when/ if fiber is coming to Elan in Uptown? Last I heard, they were trying to break their contract with Comcast to allow USI fiber. Anyone there know anything about this? As of Friday last week the install is being held up pending legal contract...

Re: Minneapolis Fiber Internet and Cable Services
So, I don't necessarily understand the appeal of CenturyLink or USI adding regulated services when cable is quickly becoming another video-over-IP service (see Sling TV). It is still pretty popular (ie a requirement) for some people to have regular Cable TV style video service. Bundling (a marketin...

Re: Minneapolis Fiber Internet and Cable Services
Only the first port of the 8-port switch is usable for Internet. If you subscribe to USI's VoIP/phone service called Ravon, that is usually then connected to port 2 of the switch. The remaining ports are not usable for Internet. Ah, ok. I'd imagine that USI will supply an IPTV service similar to Ce...

Re: Minneapolis Fiber Internet and Cable Services
They did a great job with the install and put the NID and switch exactly where I wanted them. It's interesting that they're supplying 8-port switches since the optimal secure setup would utilize a single port to an internal firewall that supplies wifi and serves the rest of the house. I'm not compl...

Re: Minneapolis Fiber Internet and Cable Services
A fiber optic cable is trenched to your house and terminates into a NID on the side of the house. From there an internal fiber cable is run from the NID into the house (usually basement) to a fiber modem. From there a cat5e will connect to, most typically, a wifi/router device. Additionally if you'r...

Re: Minneapolis Fiber
Yes additional time and money for vetting newer speed offerings is required but I guarantee you the the people who are doing the fiber installs are not the same people doing the electronics. Also, the labor and materials costs for fiber install completely eclipses the time/cost for exploring and off...

Re: Minneapolis Fiber
jw138, as indicated the story you linked to, higher speed offerings do not really impede the fiber build out deployment. The same fibers can deliver 10-megabit or 100-gigabit equally well, it is purely a matter of what electronics you connect to each end. That is essentially one of the two beautiful...

Re: Minneapolis Fiber
If your biggest need is one Netflix HD stream, then the 25 Mbps is quite adequate. Also, if you decide to upgrade later, or downgrade if you start at 50mbps, it is super trivial to change: just call the customer service line and you'll be changed within minutes.

Re: Minneapolis Fiber
I have no idea how CenturyLink does it, maybe not at all. US Internet can run fiber to the building then install cat5 to the units of the building. A high rise with no existing cat5 might be a bit of a challenge but it can certainly be done.

Re: Minneapolis Fiber
Just saw this pretty nifty interactive map showing addresses/apartments with the fiber service. It could be used for apartment shopping. http://fiber.usinternet.com/customers/where/ Also, fiber can be cut like wire and re-spliced and it can be done either in the middle of a span or at the end with t...
