Trucks: 2 or 3 Small vs 1 Big Semi ?
Snelling Avenue is a bastardization of residential, schools, retail, and... trucking, much of it from the multi-modal terminal on Pierce-Butler. Are the trucks a significant problem on Snelling? If so, one option is to send them all down Transfer Road & Cretin Ave to 94. Inefficient but keeps th...

Re: Twin Cities LRT vs Portland Tram ?
@kellonathan, sort of both but primarily streetcar. Our LRT seems (to me) to fall somewhere between a standard Tram (streetcar in US) and a commuter rail. Located in street ROW like tram but with some dedicated ROW. Faster than a tram, not as fast as commuter. Stop spacing about the same as tram/str...

Twin Cities LRT vs Portland Tram ?
I'm doing a quick deal on Portland's tram system. Does anyone know how it compares performance wise to our LRT? EG, how fast you can traverse 1 mile or some other comparative measure? Cost per passenger mile to build and maintain it? In theory our LRT s/b faster but it didn't seem that way. I wish I...

Re: Bicycling and transit elasticity ?
I would guess that rail options like LRT or Tram would be much easier to ramp up for seasonal or single event (sports, concert, snow/cold) since cars could simply be added and wouldn't require additional personnel (or much additional personnel?)? Do you know if Copenhagen simply accounts for the ext...

Bicycling and transit elasticity ?
How difficult is it for transit to ramp up and down based on weather? If we achieved perhaps 15% modal share of bicycling (commute, school, grocery runs, and dinner), which should be very feasible, how well can a transit system react to increased demand during inclement weather? How costly? Unintend...

Re: K-12 schools with high bicycle modal share ?
Thanks all. I'm primarily interested in bicycling, but also walking. A half mile walk zone would be about 0.8 square miles straight line, a one mile walk zone approx 3 square miles, and a three mile bicycle zone about 28 square miles straight line. All a bit less measured along paths and roads. So, ...

K-12 schools with high bicycle modal share ?
I'm trying to collect data on K-12 schools including urban, suburban and rural, that have fairly high modal shares of students riding bicycles (and walking). Any advice that anyone can give me on this would be appreciated and in particular if you know of any schools that have a fairly high modal sha...

U of M transitway bicycle usage?
Does anyone have an idea of how much the transitway between the campuses is used for bicycling? Are there other routes that students prefer to avoid the buses or are the bus drivers generally quite courteous?
Thanks,
Thanks,

Another option would be to utilize some Niceride stations for transport between an LRT station and the mall.

I went down to the Amsterdam last night for this but it was sold out with a line of people filling the stairwell hoping to be let in. Did anyone here go? Highlights?

Re: Grid vs Bicycles ?
Call her "tween" age, and since we don't live there she isn't riding alone in that area. But it's as good as any busy urban node for kids on bikes. I don't think so. I see about as many people riding on sidewalks around here as on the streets, particularly on Selby, Grand, and Dale. They ...

2) I ride with my daughter around the cathedral hill / summit area without worry and have done so since she was little. It's a perfectly friendly area to ride a bike. Summit itself could be better but isn't bad by any means and obviously my daughter isn't a "vehicular cyclist". How old is...

Re: Grid vs Bicycles ?
What then is your recommendation for Summit/Cathedral? Is it good like it is? What changes would you make? What's the problem statement? Good question. At a high level, is the road/street layout in Summit/Cathedral (or the area bounded by 94, 35E, St Clair, and Lexington) OK as is or should changes...

Grid vs Bicycles ?
In some recent posts I have, not unexpectedly, taken a bit of criticism for my recommendations for blocking off grids or otherwise forcing motor traffic from residential streets on to collectors or arterials — car sewers. I would like to better understand what others idea's are for alternatives as w...
