Re: Malcolm Yards Phase One (food hall, apartment buildings, grocery store)

Not sure I really get a food hall over there, when the walk and bike sheds to the north are always going to be limited.

Yeah, I think the faux dive thing is driving for nostalgia, not retention of the Sunrise's clientele.

Re: Southside - General Topics

It's a faux dive bar, it's gotta have some crap beer that I'd probably never order.

Anyway, I liked both it and Venn. Daily choice would probably depend on the food truck at Venn.

Re: Harlem Irving and CA Ventures - 240 Hennepin Ave - 18-20 stories

Downtown Minneapolis has always had a freakishly small number of drug stores. Downtown DC has a CVS on practically every street. I suppose that's because workers who rely on transit won't walk terribly far from the office for their errands while a larger percentage of Minneapolis workers drive and c...

Re: Eleven (Ryan Condo Tower) - 1111 West River Parkway - 43 stories / 526'

There was an update presentation to the DMNA tonight. They're giving up on the West River Parkway connection, and access to the site will be via Padilla's existing curb cut on 11th. However, they aren't really changing the site plan, and will be paving a dead-end driveway up to the edge of the park...

Re: Nicollet Mall

Denver's 16th Street Mall is a pedestrian scale shopping street, with small storefronts that are actually used for retail. We should be deeply jealous, because that's a great thing for a city to have.

Nicollet Mall is not that.

Re: 800 Washington Ave S (Guthrie Ramp liner development: Reloaded)

Not that it's a make or break factor, but I'm puzzled at the comments saying the trees on the AECOM project won't survive. LPM and Nic on 5th are both supporting 2+ story trees on their roof decks. As long as the right cultivars are selected and proper measures are taken to enable their success, I ...

Re: East End / Thresher Square / Trader Joes - 713 Washington Ave S

It's been awhile since I've been in a TJ's, in part because I'm not going drive past another option to get to one, and in part because when I used to shop there from time to time, I found them short on fresh meat and produce. Having gone in expecting that, I was pleasantly surprised. Planning to sto...

I'm pretty sure I remember reading that the site next to Sawatdee is part of Zygi Wilf's real estate holdings, and that would explain the New Jersey connection.
The Garden companies are the Wilf family's development companies.

Re: Minnesota Governor Election 2018

This is why we need ranked choice voting for every race. In both the DFL gov primary and the CD5 primary, I have a strong preference for two of the candidates over the third, but have to decide whether to vote strategically for the one of the two I think most likely to win or for the one I like the ...

Yesterday during evening rush hour things were pretty quiet at 11th and WRP (there were cars going through, but no real backups), but sorta weirdly, cars backed up on WRP in both directions about a block away. Not hard to see how that could get worse at times.

Re: Bicyclist Demographics (and popular image)

My problem with Ward is that his videos often seem to involve him being kind of a jerk, despite being entirely within his rights. Like, yeah, you have every right to take the lane on Lyndale. Yeah, drivers are jerks. But why? There's not much for destinations on the one lane stretch of Lyndale, so w...

Maaaybe the numbers could work around existing business nodes (38th St & 28th Ave, 42nd St & 28th Ave, 50th St & 34th Ave) and near LRT Stations, but generally speaking I don't think you could capture high enough rents in any old generic residential area to support new construction (including $200-...

If you spend any time in that area, the intersection of WRP and 11th is already an absolute shit show between bikers, pedestrians, residents and tourists. Rode by around 9:20 this morning. Super quiet. You mean during evening rush hour? Weekends? Depending on the time of day, the intersections on 1...

I would think the large developers are largely indifferent to the fourplex part of the plan. I doubt they have any interest in doing a bunch of tiny (by their standards) projects or think that those are really the threat to the kind they do.

The Park Board building is hardly the only driveway off the parkway up there too.

This seems like a silly fight unless the Park Board has other concessions it's hoping to extract.

That sounds like a commute that's perfect for a bike ride to the Blue Line. 10 minutes on the bike. 30 wait/train. Not too much longer than driving.

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

I'd guess "Fourplexes everywhere" is out. I sincerely hope that the final plan still allows for at least 2 units (plus ADU) on every lot in the city. The ideal "compromise victory" is to make that concession, while retaining the vast upzoning along transit corridors (Built Form Map: Corridor 4 or 6...
