Re: Bike Share

What is the justification for maximum assisted speeds above the average biking speed we want on city streets, of 10 mph or so? Why do we care how fast people bike on city streets? Trails have speed limits, but I don't think streets do. And 10 mph is pretty slow. I'm super slow and I average more th...

Trader Joe's is mostly pre prepared ingredients and not a lot of raw ingredients to actually cook with.
I've been pleasantly surprised in that regard with the new one downtown. More fresh meat (pre-packaged, of course) and produce than I recalled.

Re: Gateway Tower (RBC/Four Seasons) - 37 stories - 503'

Shorter distance and there's coffee and typically some activity (perhaps not of a type that appeals to luxury hotel guests) at the library and Hop Cat on the next block and then the light rail stop.

Re: Gateway Tower (RBC/Four Seasons) - 37 stories - 503'

Still gonna be a long and boring inside walk from that fancy hotel, as there's no other route than through the library, 365, Xcel, the Nic and Fifth Street Towers until you no skyway level retail until you get to there (with the Nic's being empty).

Re: Gateway Tower (RBC/Four Seasons) - 37 stories - 503'

I guess I think there's likely to be an alley between the two Opus buildings and the skyway from the library will basically line up with it, connecting to the south to 365 and the north to the new building, if it ever happens.

Thanks, I was trying to figure out how to do that.

FWIW, this old article talks about a connection to 365: http://www.startribune.com/plans-for-ni ... 476399723/

That still requires Opus to actually build something on their lot next to 365 Nic...
Does it? I thought the library skyway was going to connect to 365. (Eyeballing it looks like it would work)

Re: Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board

Thanks, Marty. Appreciate FRNNG working on this and agree with those changes. Would also be great to somehow find room for left turn lanes off the Parkway (that might actually be within scope of the trail planning) and I'd like to see the southbound right turn lane on Cedar removed as well (It's lit...

Re: Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board

There's a lot to take in, but these look great (and connecting the Park Ave bike lanes to the trail is one of my personal issues). I guess it's outside the scope here, but if they could include fixing the disaster that is the Parkway/Cedar intersection, that would be good too.

Re: Lake & Nicollet Redevelopment (Kmart site)

So, short take away: these are only some of the relevant documents and they do not answer all of our questions. Slightly longer take away: there's an entity between Kmart and the landlord of ground lease, meaning Kmart's bankruptcy may not be an event of default on the key document. Brief summary of...

Re: Interstate 94

Typically if 35W is backed up I've found city streets to be equally so. And you always think it'll be faster to take some back road, but then you wait 10 minutes to get through a stoplight or four-way stop. Depends on the street. And that stoplight or four-way stop is almost certain where you meet ...

Yup, the one place where there are incentives to not drive (express routes, parking prices, congestion), people respond and do something else.

For everything else it's easier and cheaper to drive.

Re: Interstate 94

This de-emphasizing of cars you keep talking about... it's not a thing that the vast majority of people are actually doing. As I also keep telling my wife, it's no fun to go farther than you need to in rush hour traffic in a car either. And I don't know. Way more of my colleagues than you would exp...

As we de-emphasize cars, I think we as a society need to think about what is a “normal” distance for day-to-day travel.

Hint: our work commutes and after school activities need to be in closer range than they are today.
100% I keep telling my wife that about pre-school.

Re: Interstate 94

I don't get why this is so surprising. I drive from Minneapolis to St. Paul every weekday morning on 94 because it's faster. It would probably take me twice as long using Lake/Marshall. Between downtowns is far enough to make sense. From 46th street to downtown during rush hour?? Why put yourself i...

I submitted a FOIA request to the city to read the lease. Is there someone interested in reading them that's fluent in the legalese? I attempted to decipher them but got a bit buried in the bureaucracy.
If you share the lease, I can take a look.

Re: Embarrassing Confessions of Urbanists

Went to the Mall of America last weekend for probably the first time in 5+ years. I live 5 minutes away and drive past it all the time. I was amazed by the sites, went on the roller coaster, and actually had a lot of fun. Had kid duty the other day while it was so cold and wanted to take the kid (w...

Re: Interstate 94

There's also a surprisingly large amount of intraurban usage on the corridor--people going between the downtowns, people going a couple miles in St. Paul, and so on. A grade-separated highway does not serve this kind of traffic very well: the high speeds give little or no benefit when you're only t...

Re: Minneapolis Skyway System

One of the weird things about trying to keep the riff raff out is does that really work? Tourist and people who don't come downtown are certainly kept out, but aren't they the people business actually want? Meanwhile, the homeless population of downtown not only knows where to get in, they know wher...
