Re: Home Buying

Thanks Sean! I just started working with a realtor, but I'm thinking it might not be a good fit. For one, she thinks I'm a kinda weird because I want the option to bike and bus to work. I'd be interested to hear your suggestion on realtor either here or via PM. I completely agree about air condition...

Re: Home Buying

We're planning to buy a house (in Duluth) in the next several months. We're looking at ~100 year old traditionals and I feel like I need an education to make a good decision. Here's some of things I want to learn about: - Different styles of old houses. I want to be able to tell the different styles...

Re: Renting vs. Owning | Apartments vs. Condos

Also, if houses are just now reaching the values they saw in 2007, well, it is 9 years later. Getting back to the trend from that long ago doesn't sound so scary. Especially since, I'd argue, most neighborhoods in Minneapolis are more desirable, attractive, and walkable than they were 9 years ago. ...

Re: Renting vs. Owning | Apartments vs. Condos

There are super-cheap houses very close to Victory Memorial. I spent my first five years of life up there, though on the Robbinsdale side. I would definitely look there if I were in the market. Ditto all down Theo Wirth. I'd also look at Harrison. Right across the street from Bryn Mawr at half the ...

Re: Renting vs. Owning | Apartments vs. Condos

It's not so much that I fear going underwater, although that is a consideration after watching so many family members and friends get trapped in their homes, more it's an issue of affordability. I could qualify for a $250K mortgage, but I just don't want one that large. I'd rather get a much smaller...

Re: Renting vs. Owning | Apartments vs. Condos

I've been planning to buy a house this spring, but have gotten really nervous about the market. In the urban neighborhoods I'm looking in, it seems prices are really close to where they were at the peak of the market. In Northeast, I keep seeing houses that sold for about $170K in 2012 that are list...

Re: Presidential Election 2016

Explain to me how the reporting that private news organizations choose to do can be correlated to being anti-democratic.
Journalism is not just a private business, it's also a profession. The press has a unique responsibility to inform citizens which makes democracy possible.

Re: Minneapolis City Politics General Discussion

I agree there's a lot of overlap between greens and progressive democrats. But I do think Cam Gordon is a more reliable progressive vote than most the democratic counsel members. The city would benefit from an opposition party challenging middle of the road democrats. It'd be nice to have a real cho...

Re: Minneapolis City Politics General Discussion

It would be nice to see the dems lose one party control to the green party. Electing republicans isn't going to help the city.

Ok, I stand corrected. On this issue of which stadium location they did disclose their self interest.

Re: Star Tribune

I noticed early on their policy was to include disclaimers on editorials but not news articles. I recall this pattern was consistent. It shouldn't be hard to link to one news article with a disclaimer to prove I was wrong about "never". Though I'm sure you have better things to do.

Re: Star Tribune

Local business is business, news at 11. Yes, they are a business. But journalism is also a profession with a duty the the public. So when they advocate for a bad deal for the public out of narrow financial self interest, they deserve to be criticized for marring their profession. Sort of like a doc...

They only included the disclosure in their many pro-stadium editorials, never in their news articles on the subject.

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Office Market

Yes, I get the most done when I can work by myself in my office without distractions. I like to close my door for phone calls and generally appreciate my own semi-private space. I'm not sure who these millennials are who want this, but I suspect this trend will be widely seen as a mistake fairly soon.

Re: Suburban Malls and Associated Retail News

Except the denominator "total sales" includes ecommerce. Also, it's not clear if the 1% of sales was calculated after deducting sales expected to shift online or to another store. That's how they calculated the $300 million reduction at least. The annual sales volume of the stores, net of ...

Another example was Chris Coleman's shortlived proposal for a 'nickel a beer' sales tax to fund the Vikings stadium. But 'per dollar' is implied unless otherwise specified.

Re: ZYGIDOOGLE FAIL DOME $$$$ AHHHHh

No. The zygidoogle fail dome fails on fiscal, common sense, and moral grounds. But we already argued about it in circles until we were dizzy so now it doesn't matter, I guess. Plus, football.
