Re: Nicollet Hotel Block
My point wasen't to argue which building in NY is their signature one. Perhaps the Empire State or Chrysler building still are over Freedom tower- At one point the Empire State clearly was NY's signature tower...in 1912 I'm guessing? My point (and opinion) is if you want to call it a signature build...

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block
The first thing that comes to my mind with the word signature for a building in downtown is height. The Foshay was Minneapolis's signature building until the IDS was built. In Chicago it's been the sears tower for decades and New York's signature is clearly the freedom tower. My opinion is if signat...

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block
Heck, if you added just 10 stories to the United proposal it's still the tallest all-residential building in the city (if you consider the hotel portion to be separate). Generally speaking though, it is really hard to compare and contrast them since three proposals clock in between 30 and 36 storie...

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block
Such a Minnesota read- yes. Excluding New York for sure, just about every downtown city has many many surface lots, yet I guarantee you'd never read an article wrote like this if this was proposed in another city. I'm surprised our new stadium is seating over 60 thousand! And an article wasn't publi...

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block
Philadelphia had this same weird "can't build height than" respect garbage. It has long been shot down and they have added many tall towers. And their still adding. It's done a lot for the city and brought a lot of revenue to downtown. Minneapolis needs to take lessons and how to build a t...

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block
When I was a kid in the 80s, we had a field trip to the IDS center, along with several other schools. I remember it being the best and most interesting field trip of the elementary school year. So on that day, the tall ironic IDS drew 250+kids. I can see where tall skyscrapers attract people and tou...

Re: Nicollet Hotel Block
For sure. If we're not going to build anything architecturally stylish, then make it super tall. We're long over-do for something tall. If we're not going to build tall- then build it architecturally stylish at least. I do think the 80 story proposal looks better then some will admit.
