Re: Road Geek Topics

Who do we need to lobby to get a (permanent?) traffic enforcement campaign at this specific intersection? It would only take like 1-2 cops to go car to car writing tickets for blocking the box.

Re: Hillcrest golf course redevelopment site

The "future land use" for this site in the 2040 land use map was nearly entirely single family homes, with a tiny "business node" on larpentuer. I grew up near here, and would hate that result. Hopefully that is just a placeholder, but unless we push elected officials and organize to make it happen ...

Re: Tunnels!

The only "hyperloop" thing that could ever be feasible would be sticking some kind of HSR or Maglev in a vacuum tube to eliminate air resistance (perhaps for only part of a journey). And if he wants the boring company to be viable, it should be focusing on making tunnel boring for subways more affor...

Re: D Line - Chicago-Fremont/Emerson Rapid Bus

I get the frustration of a bus stopping ahead of you when driving. It's also frustrating when your bus stops to pick up/drop off people, and cars don't let it back in, refusing to yield. Transit riders can't avoid those cars failing to yield, but cars can take an alternate route.

If we were to build (or if we built) our light rail system mostly in a series of cut-and-cover tunnels, we could prevent cracks by making them climate controlled. 8-)

Is there a chance this still gets moved to the CP rail spur? Why is that shown on the LPA and labeled as to be studied still? They plan on analyzing using W 7th vs the CP Rail Spur in more detail before deciding on which of the two they'll use (and how), but only for the highlighted section (I thin...

Looking at it, you can tell they're just forcing the new lines into the existing format. A fresh format designed to handle the whole region would be nice. hBRT on highway 36 would also be nice. (pretty please!)

Another batch of apartments is going up in Maplewood near the mall, wedged between County Rd D and the Bruce Vento Trail (immediately north of Costco). It has 152 units and 4 stories. It's called the "Trails Edge Apartments". https://i.imgur.com/uD9D8G4 (<too big to embed) https://i.imgur.com/FDyqfx...

I bet the difference between $1200/month and $1500-1600/month is whether utilities are included.

Anyone have the scoop on the city's side of this? It doesn't really mention why it must be redone.

We should ask Ryan companies what kind of density they'd need to cut that subsidy down to $50M, and even down to $0!

(and of course we should then upzone the site for those densities)

What technology companies would also need production/logistics space? Amazon would have that kind of need, but I've never heard of companies like Facebook, Google, & Microsoft needing it. Maybe Apple? (because they have physical products?)

I bet it's Amazon.

Re: Midtown Corridor Rail & Lake Street aBRT (B Line)

Cool, thanks for the info. That's incredible that a station could cost $400,000. Where is all the money going? It's basically four poles, a few slabs of glass and a computer, right? I've never looked too closely at how they're constructed, though you've gotta tear the area up to put in utilities an...

Re: Midtown Corridor Rail & Lake Street aBRT (B Line)

To those skilled in back of the napkin math, I'm curious how aBRT costs add up. I know they're dramatically cheaper than LRT, but still it's hard to figure out how these still cost so much. Like, what does a bus cost? I have no idea, but let's say $500K (which seems really high?). And let's say a t...

The only compromise I can see is a walkup/bike-up window (like Terzo at 50th & Penn, or early Dairy Queen’s). Slight tangent, but I LOVE walkup(/bikeup) windows. They're a great amenity for pedestrians and add street-level activity. The dairy queen I grew up with (on white bear ave near hillcrest) ...
