Re: trees in Atlanta

Higher density = more trees saved. Not the other way around. Okay, I really want to believe this. Please expand on this thought. The more people/businesses we can house in already-existing urban/(suburban) areas through greater density, the fewer forests, wetlands, farmland (which means natural are...

Re: Tax Increment Financing (TIF) Districts

Instead of TIF, could cities define a district and levy a separate/additional property tax therein? For the Nicollet ave streetcar, Minneapolis needed special permission from the legislature because it's a value-capture district. If the key part is "value capture", and not "district", cities could u...

Re: Suburban Malls and Associated Retail News

Three of these malls are not like the others, though is that just because of recent anchor closings? (like JCPenny in Southdale and Sears in Burnsville Center last year?) Northtown Mall (Blaine): 1.65% vacancy rate (losing a Herbergers this year) Ridgedale Center: 2.07% vacancy rate Mall of America:...

Re: Hopkins - General Topics

I was just in Hopkins for the first time the other day when my bf and I went to eat at Samba, and noticed a wonderful separated bikeway there! Since part of it was adjacent to a one-way, sounds like that was the ARTery project. It would be awesome if we could get bikeways like that built around the ...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

They're finally tearing up the corner of Maryland/Arcade for the 54 bus extension! They're also tearing out the two temporary pedestrian refuges before resurfacing, when they'll install the new permanent ones. (service on the 54 bus to the Maplewood Mall transit center starts June 9th!) https://i.im...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

(This map was posted by EOst in the Hennepin/E Line thread) https://i.imgur.com/vr6SOFl.png I just want to say how disappointed I am that it looks like Ramsey County got the A Line extension into what appears to be the official aBRT queue. There are many other areas where aBRT should go before the ...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

When I asked Metro Transit about what happens after the #54 extension's 3-year "demonstration" period was complete... the answer was sort of that it would duplicate the future Rush Line. Part of the methodology for predicting ridership of projects like the Rush Line involves the Met Council's assum...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

I hope it's not E 7th. To me this area has 3 possible projects. I do not think all three need to happen. Rt 54 extension - starts June 9(?) Rush Line BRT E 7th aBRT Rt 54 extension is to build ridership for E 7th aBRT (and it is starting June 9th! Yay, finally!) From what I've heard over time, Metr...

Re: Autonomous vehicles impact on real estate

Labor is the highest cost for providing transit service, I think there's a lot of opportunity for driver-less bus services. Right, losing the driver could bring down costs marginal costs a lot, as long as we don't worry about things like helping disabled passengers board, strapping down wheelchairs...

Are there relevant/needed kinds of industrial space that could reasonably work in a traditional mixed-use zoning area (if our zoning code were to allow them)?

Re: Highway 36

Definitely sarcasm, though the waste of space is still unfortunate. Metro transit studied highway BRT on 36 that would've ended here, but it would have probably been just a park and ride (now with complementary roundabouts!) anyways.

Re: Nicollet-Central Streetcar

There's $10m in the fund for it today and it's expected to stand at $17m by the end of 2018. We still have at least 24 years before we'd hit the funding mark for the streetcar (assuming an average of $10m value captured per year) to change our minds (or maybe like 10 if they decide to use bonds). 5-...

Re: Mall of America Transit Station: Master Plan

Another re-bid? This seems to be a pattern developing, but I don't feel informed enough to speculate on what the significance is. There's an active labor shortage in the construction trades and the economy is good, so construction inflation is high and affecting all projects like this. This is also...

Re: 2017-18 MN Legislative Session & Budget - Battle for the Senate Majority?

Looks like the two districts swung left relative to 2016's results, roughly proportional to the democrats' current generic congressional ballot advantage (which has shrunk over the past few months).

Yeah, I need to find out why the Southdale District Task Force is pushing for those large setbacks. I don’t understand that.
Maybe they want even wider roads in the future. Probably nothing good like a multimodal multiway boulevard though.

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

I'd be in favor of eliminating the gas tax in favor of Carbon Tax + Vehicle Miles Traveled Tax, though both are nonstarters until the DFL can (maybe) retake the senate (in 2020, at the earliest).
