I'd rather see them sell the land to Xcel Energy on the condition that they convert it to one of these:

Because a monolithic football cathedral adds so much to the urban character of a city?

I can't imagine why the Planning Commission would allow them to, unless they really liked that Disneyland, film set look.

Re: 2024 Olympic Bid?
I'm glad they're being upfront and saying "Yeah, we're going to build the stadium in a way that we can dismantle it once it lives out its three months of usefulness." HOWEVER, in regards to where Minneapolis could put their athlete villages? 35W freeway caps. You'd never have a better excu...

Re: U.S. Bank Stadium
Maybe a developer can use the stadium signage as justification to add a few more stories onto a future development along Washington. A well placed building between the stadium and the Stone Arch Bridge would go a long way.

Re: Suburbs - General Topics
There was a big push for Ham Lake and East Bethel to join the city sewer system a few years back. The town threw a tantrum, while the mayor was a proponent of it. Then this happened... http://www.startribune.com/ham-lake-mayor-apologizes-for-recent-remark/18675674/ At odds with council members who o...

I grew up in Ham Lake. It was awful and I cannot understand the mentality of those who choose to live there, full stop.

If I had to buy/rent in the suburbs, Hopkins, SLP, and Robbinsdale would be high on the list. But Burnsville and Shakopee? Swing and a miss.

Re: Major League Soccer Stadium in Minneapolis
I'd love to see the stadium still happen, but if they let this die because they didn't get tax breaks, it kind of paints an ugly picture of how much faith the owners have in the team's ability to turn a profit.

Re: Des Moines
Oh totally. I was staying near the airport, and apparently since the road leading from the airport to downtown (Fleur) is most people's first impression of the city, they make an attempt to make that section of town look nicer than some of the other areas, such as the poorer and neglected north. Plu...

Re: Des Moines
When I went to Des Moines, my friends in Minneapolis who had never been there asked what it was like. I said "Imagine you take St. Paul, add in some of the things that are fun about Minneapolis, and stick it in the middle of nowhere."

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)
I think that the other 5 commissioners would recognize that 10% of a $200-500 million project is a lot easier to swallow than 10% of a $2 billion dollar project, regardless if it went from Minneapolis to Uptown or Minneapolis to Albert Lea. And if the route didn't need to be dictated by federal guid...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)
They would have to go to the Hopkins, Minnetonka, EP and every other council and say, "That LRT line you thought you'd get in 2021? It's probably not opening in your neck of the woods until maybe 2025, if ever. If SWLRT was switched to a piecemeal project, as far as I'm aware, they wouldn't ne...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)
What if the line was built in short phases, 2-3 stations at a time? Build the expensive tunnel to Uptown, wait a few years, then build out further and further with dedicated transit funds. You don't need a federal transit program's assistance if you're not spending billions in one go.
