Re: Downtown Minneapolis General Topics & Development Map

It was rumored they might take up the block-sized lot near the Convention Center since a new hotel had been talked about there forever, and their hotels in some other cities were downtown properties. They ultimately are developing looking to property near the new Vikings training center in Eagan, to...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

It basically boils down to the bougie suburbs didn't want to have to pay for the full transit system, but they still wanted express buses to downtown. I don't imagine much has changed for those communities, at least at the decision making level.

Re: Thrivent Headquarters Block - 6th St and Portland Ave

"When does this end?"

Hopefully with projects deep into construction on the remaining block-sized surface lots downtown so the next cycle doesn't have as much low hanging fruit to work with.

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

According to this National Transit Database report from the FTA (page 40), making Metro Transit a free operation in 2016 would have cost $93 million in farebox recovery. That really doesn't take into account the lack of need to maintain ticket systems or sending Metro Transit Police on ticket checki...

It's been so long I've forgotten - this is already past Planning and the City Council, right? They can proceed right away?

Re: 240 Park Ave S - Zygi's Apartments

"This is too tall, we aren't downtown!"
Please tell me that's a comical exaggeration and somebody who lives in downtown seriously didn't try to argue that the Mill District isn't part of downtown.

Re: Nicollet Mall

The Macy's project and the rumored City Center redo are going to create pockets where the street will really work, which will add to the stretch between 9th-12th where the street is already working as imagined. I think expecting the entire street to come completely alive as long as the skyways still...

Re: Nicollet Mall

I know it's not the same as actually being there, but a quick Google Maps trip down 16th Street (imagery from 2017-18) and it's almost indistinguishable from Nicollet. Some chain restaurants. A Panera. A few local upscale bars. Corporate buildings built with no regard for the mall. Some brutalism. A...

Re: Gateway Tower (RBC Plaza Jr.) - 30 stories - 458'

Ahh, searched his name and now I see my mistake. He would routinely say we would never see a 500'+ tower again because there's a 400' secret cap set by the Minneapolinati, which is why I thought 500.

Nah, the guy on here who was pushing the conspiracy always referred to 500'. It's based around a fealty to the height of IDS.

Re: Gateway Tower (RBC Plaza Jr.) - 30 stories - 458'

And, indeed, less than 15' shorter than the tallest building in St. Paul? New conspiracy theory - the ban on 500' tall buildings in Minneapolis isn't a shadow directive from the Minneapolis City Council, but rather the Saint Paul City Council, as a moratorium so Saint Paul could catch up and, event...

Re: Gateway Tower (RBC Plaza Jr.) - 30 stories - 458'

Almost like the plaza, retail, and restaurant space are an improvement over not just a parking lot, but the kind of street level experience we would have gotten out of a building like this 15-20 years ago. 30 stories of Class A office in this corner of downtown will help continue to fuel the crazy d...

I'm not happy with this building either, but we've got a *lot* of vacant lots to burn through before we can even start to daydream about Lower Manhattan.

Because before they built that distribution center twenty years ago, we were all sustenance farmers and nobody else had figured out distribution of groceries yet. It was a dark age.

I wish I could say the same. Pawlenty will do a photo-op in camo with a hunting rifle and the base will convince themselves the 2A is at risk. Again.

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

There may be interest in building them along the fringes of built up nodes (like Uptown or Dinkytown) as an alternative to a giant apartment building.

But there isn't going to be any interest in clear cutting single family homes and replacing them with rowhouses like the reactionaries think.

Sixplexes are mentioned at least as often as references to a vast developer conspiracy, so that's good news.
