Re: Lake & Nicollet Redevelopment (Kmart site)

Who said anything about breaking a lease? Lampert or his assignee can keep leasing for pennies on the dollar. But they don't get to make changes to a property that no longer conforms to the zoning or comprehensive plan without city approval. The land is now guided Transit 15 and Destination Mixed Us...

Re: Lake & Nicollet Redevelopment (Kmart site)

Minneapolis is also in a good position with complete ownership of the entire property. Eddie knows his real estate holdings are worth more than the stores themselves (see Rice Street Sears) and this allows the city to ultimately control the destiny of the property instead of Seritage, no matter how...

Re: Lake & Nicollet Redevelopment (Kmart site)

Finally someone has made a map of the remaining Sears and Kmart locations nationwide through their latest announced closures. Sears/Kmart has mostly gone extinct in the midwest, and if Madison's Sears and/or Minot/Michgan's remaining Kmart go, how long could the distribution math make sense for Nic...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

Or the county could just admit they screwed up, offer BNSF the crystal connection they want, and move on. If the railroad still won't budge after that then it looks far worse on them. At this point, that's a terrible trade-off. BNSF shutting down the northwest suburbs with mile-long trains going te...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

Using the spur alignment was our regional leaders looking for a shortcut to the ribbon cutting in the first place. Assuming BNSF's participation was incredibly stupid and doubling down on that decision with no progress being made towards reconciliation only burnt up time and money for the project. I...

Locked MSPBJ article, but it sounds like Hennepin is quietly investigating other options. I imagine they'd have been better off doing this years ago, but better late than never?

Re: Role of Visitors and Spaces for them in Cities

The Eiffel Tower wasn't commissioned by the City of Paris, it was an attraction for the Exposition Universelle. Orlando became a tourist destination because the land there cost next to nothing. Walt Disney bought cheap land in secret using holding companies and nearly single-handedly made Orlando a ...

I've long suspected that frenetic news coverage of Crime™ is just a tool aimed at playing to the anxieties of a rich suburban demographic and/or inducing them to move farther and farther out to ever-more-unsustainable exurban distances. ("Oh my goodness, there was a shooting here in EDEN PRAIRIE th...

I think it's less likely that they're intentionally trying to hurt anyone with their site and far more likely that they're just trying to get ad revenue and the person in charge of doing so is probably five years behind online ad best practices that would better protect consumers from scummy ads. St...

In the near future I predict that the burgeoning St. Anthony skyline, with the Stone Arch Bridge in the foreground, will be a popular photograph. My regular joke about St. Anthony's growth is that pretty soon, visitors to Minneapolis who are unfamiliar with the area will think St. Anthony is St. Pa...

Re: Northeast and Southeast Minneapolis - General Topics

This may be a little extreme, but if the Railroad is going to do whatever they want within their rights can't the city do the same thing? Maybe the county could. But they'd have to be damn sure they'll never need CP's cooperation on anything in the future, given how childish BNSF has been since Hen...

Railroads gonna railroad. It's too bad some gilded age corrupt morons decided they should have as much power as a sovereign nation because that decision keeps on giving.

If there was regional demand to support expansion, they'd do it. Cedar Fair has found ways to reconfigure existing space in their other parks to optimize the amount of coasters they can cram in. It's more that many of their parks have the potential to draw guests from multiple metro regions (Cedar P...

Sadly, considering how VF is one of the lowest priority parks for Cedar Fair in terms of expansion and development, it's unlikely that a direct rail connection would ever be worth the effort.

Re: Uptown Retail & Restaurant News

Stuart Chazin, a member of the ownership group that purchased the property in 2010, said Wednesday that the site is “probably going to be redeveloped.” Into what he couldn’t say yet, but Chazin doesn’t believe the site can support a restaurant anymore. Glad they finally came to that conclusion. Onl...
