Re: Lake & Nicollet Redevelopment (Kmart site)

If I was a Minneapolis city councilperson who wanted this over once and for all, I'd take a field trip to the Kmart with a building inspector and find some change that could be made to city code. Something that wouldn't be difficult for a new construction building or renovation project to meet, and ...

Re: Mall of America - Bloomington

Long time reader, new user: I heard from a friend who works at MOA that the waterpark is in the works for parking lot across Lindau Ln and next to Ikea. I haven't heard anything to support this. Having said that, I was at the mall last week and there were a surprising number of vacant stores, plus ...

1930 Hennepin Ave

Office and apartments sliding in between existing retail and Lowry Hill Liquors. I thought at first it was Hennepin fronted, but it seems like the office lobby is on Colfax and the apartment lobby faces the alley. Facing Hennepin is... a common space, bike storage, and the entrance to underground pa...

Re: Eleven (Ryan Condo Tower) - 1111 West River Parkway - 48 stories / 550'

The minimum parking requirement for the project is 62 spaces. The project is within the bounds of the Downtown Parking Overlay which has a maximum parking requirement of 1.7 spaces per unit making the maximum parking for the project 210 spaces. The applicant is proposing to replace all of the surfa...

The vertical gardens are nice, but this is just as much of a glass box as RBC is. But it's taller and uses rhombuses.

Is the FTA even an agency where there's a way to petition or call to bother them into actually working?

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

You're right. Part of this problem is that the city has been letting the staff drive the discussion and (at least as far as I'm aware) the only elected officials who have been wading into discussion are the ones who are asking for less. Frey and Bender should have been on the frontlines of this, and...

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

I'm not saying we should lie but I am saying that we need to figure out a way to effectively sell in a more immediately appealing way. We can win among the wonks (who are what- 2% of the population?) but change is scary and it's so easy to whip up fear and shut down people's minds. ...which is why ...

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

It comes down to it's easier to attack something in a sentence or with a yard sign, trying to defend a plan with facts and data requires your opponent to listen in good faith. It also sucks that on housing, NIMBYs have done such a good job of convincing the far left to be opposed to it too because o...

Maybe Brightline can buy up Zip Rail too, since they seem to be the only ones getting these built here.

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

I would love to believe the City of Minneapolis communications department is equipped on messaging to help sell their vision for the city. But then somebody with advance knowledge of the fourplex element of the 2040 plan started making noise about it so that busybodies like Carol Becker could start ...

Looks like we may be getting universal triplexes, scattered fourplexes in the next draft.

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

We shouldn't use property tax to fund transit because it's one of the most regressive taxes we have. I'll bite. How is this more regressive than sales tax (what we currently use in part) and vice taxes? CTIB failed because it was kneecapped by the legislature to be useless. Raising less money than ...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

Seattle and Los Angeles . They're raising their own funds for projects so they don't need to meet federal matching funds requirements. If we want to get serious about our transit system, we need to stop participating in a system where we start planning under the rules of one administration, and hop...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

If it's going to take 10-15 years, better to get on that now instead of spending another 1-3 years banging our head against the wall. Maybe with a bit of luck, we'll have a governor and legislature that lets us get some meatier transit taxes and plan another Bottineau without having to genuflect to ...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

I wish at this point Met Council would be willing to take a step back and say "You know what, we screwed up assuming BNSF would cooperate, let's not waste any more time fighting with them and come up with a different plan." Terminate in Robbinsdale, let Target pay for the expansion north if they rea...

Re: Mall of America - Bloomington

Hallmark's statement on their website is that most of their stores are franchise owned, and the language used gives me the impression a lot of Hallmarks were operated as turnkey businesses by retirees. That is almost certainly not the case for the MOA one. But it's refreshing to see a different pers...

Re: Lake & Nicollet Redevelopment (Kmart site)

It's a pain in the short term that we're stuck with the Kmart, but I think we're better off in the long term to not have the property owned by Lampert's hedge fund.
