Re: D Line - Fremont/Emerson/Chicago Rapid Bus

Currently, I think the slowdown is because of the closure of Portland at the Greenway, and also at 94. Portland traffic is detoured over to Chicago on 28th St and that has had an impact on the Chicago/Lake intersection and the Chicago/Transit Center intersection. That being said, Chicago is generall...

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image

Ha! A location scout wanted to take pictures of our house for possible use in the movie. When my wife read on the handout he gave us that the movie was about a lovable slob, she was not amused.

Re: 1501 Como Ave Apartments

Como Imports? In the late 80's I brought an old Saab in to them. They didn't fix it. Not sure if that's a reflection on them or the quality of Swedish auto manufacturing of the 70's. In any case, I'm never sad to see a parcel of land in Minneapolis that was devoted to auto sales or upkeep be repurpo...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

As for the $$$ amounts above, these $$$ are just to STUDY another arrival/departure correct? Maybe I'm confused (easily done) but these $$$ to study running another train of similar make/model on existing tracks between two existing end points seems like the definition of ridiculous. I await correc...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

Amtrak isn't especially reliable right now. It's interesting that you say this. I walk across the Robert St bridge to work every day at about 7:20 am. For the past month or two the Empire Builder has already pulled into SPUD at least half the days when I cross the bridge. That's a half an hour earl...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

Why do people think that Midtown is some magic corridor that is viable on it's own? It's not. It most definitely relies on a high quality connection into downtown at least somewhere west of Nicollet. One of the main reasons the Met Council and Metro transit aren't pushing Midtown yet is because SWL...

Re: 2014 Election

I would love to see a Warren/Sanders ticket! The 2016 presidential election is looking to be a repeat of 2004: the Dems nominate an absolutely boring, terrible candidate and get their asses handed to them. I too would love to see a Warren/Sanders ticket. (How old is Bernie anyway? Could that be a l...

Re: Tolling Urban Freeways

Many great transit systems, including the NYC subway and the Twin City Rapid Transity company, arose as private ventures. Same with passenger intercity railroad service - these things thrived, even when charging market rates. Not entirely true. While TCRT was a privately held company, they were als...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

Count me in among the excessively sweaty. I really think people are hung up on feeling sweaty and smelly after biking/exercise when in fact they probably don't smell at all. If you shower before your bike commute, you'll probably be ok for the rest of the day. I've been biking (and sweating) to work...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

From today's Strib Anoka County Commissioner Matt Look asked why the Met Council has virtually rejected a less expensive idea: having the freight and LRT run next to each other in the Kenilworth corridor and rerouting the recreational trails for about a mile at the narrowest points. “We have a solut...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

The Dean Parkway and Cedar Lake route is horribly paved and Dean too small to share with traffic. Agreed. I was thinking of Thatcher's idea to continue west on the Greenway, cross the tracks and hook up with St. Louis Ave. From there you can get back on Cedar Lake Trail pretty easily. After biking ...

Re: Southwest Corridor (Green Line Extension)

I bike the "Burnham Trail" for my commute from S Mpls to SLP. If they co-locate rail and LRT, I wouldn't miss that section one bit. As a matter of fact, I would be happy to see the elimination of one of the worst bike/street crossings in Minneapolis. Bikers blow through the stop sign on the trail wh...

Something about what you just said sparked an idea......what if Minneapolis created some kind of formal gathering place, like a market, where people could network with one-another and exchange ideas and maybe even coffee -- in person? A "marketplace of the mind", if you will. It would be person-to-...

Re: Thrivent Blocks

Very cool. The only thing is - do you think it would be too much of a competitor with the Midtown Global Market? If the West Side Market was placed at the Armory, it would compete directly with the MIdtown Global Market, and potentially trump it. Do you think so? I'm not sure what Midtown Market's ...
