Re: Tunnels!
I'd like to see a similar special on the tunneling that Seattle has done for transit - Seattle seems to be alone in the U.S. in a) doing lots of new transit tunneling and b) being successful and below budget with it. Maybe Thatcher could be interviewed for it. The only tunnel I'm aware of currently...

Re: Minnesota/Twin Cities vernacular residential architecture
Why do we have basements when warmer climates don't? I'm sure you can't just pour a 4 inch slab and build on that, or your house would get thrown out of the ground when the ground froze. So we've got to go below the frost line, right? And at that point you might as well just dig it all out rather t...

Re: Rochester
Oops. That's going to set the project back a bit. Construction halt because of structural defects. From the article. "This is no simple patch. It is a structural issue," said Building Safety Director Randy Johnson. "This is a load bearing center span with three stories above it."...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars
(Maybe not right thread, but this felt close) While looking at selling my current beloved Jeep for a more fuel efficient small hatchback, I came across a few listings for used electric cars, generally under $11,500. What does one need to know about buying electric cars used? What should a cautious ...

Re: Rochester
The building exterior is gray fiber cement paneling, accented with blue fiber cement paneling and wood composite paneling set around the recessed balconies. The design is contemporary, Goodenberg said, with clean, geometric lines, muted colors and "splashes" of architectural and material ...

Not rumor. http://www.postbulletin.com/news/local/city-transit-lands-park-and-ride-contracts/article_e30669dd-7f8c-5e15-abd0-8ea71c976bfc.html Wal Mart was not going to renew their park and ride contracts so the city had to find new spots for them. Rumor: IBM may soon begin leasing some of its EXPAN...

One did a couple of years ago. He lost the case. ^^^Wait till some driver decides to challenge the speed limit in court rather than pay a speeding ticket. The mass conversion of Mn/DOT lights to LEDs is about to occur. One contract, covering primarily the south metro, was let this month, the next wi...

Re: Rochester
"The parking lot isn't big enough. I don't see how they could build it without tearing down half of (the shopping center)," Grimes said. He seems to be operating on the idea that there would be a whole new building built for the grocery. There isn't enough parking if you build an entire ne...

Re: Rochester
Streetcar across 52 won't happen. It is tied up with where the funding comes from. Anything that counts toward DMC has to happen in the DMC area, which ends at 52. Also, that parking lot is on the edge of Cascade Park, and I think it is tied in with the long range planning for that park. But it woul...

Re: Rochester
Main problem with Miracle Mile is that it has way to much empty space. If fit was fully occupied it would look a lot better.
One of the ideas floated in the DMC planning is that the location will eventually become park and ride for the street car/trolley running to downtown.
