Re: Eden Prairie - General Topics

So maybe SWLRT isn’t just commuter rail after all, and we’ll be seeing real urban nodes developing around each station? That’d be great.

The ARTery is amazing. It gets everything right, from safety & protection to comfort to efficiency to real placemaking. Bravo, Hopkins.

Re: E Line Arterial BRT

It's a bit of a complex route, but the rationale does make sense and it hopefully will still be fairly straightforward to navigate with the exception of the segment between France and Hennepin. Hopefully they have a concrete plan to keep the buses moving through that section smoothly, because that'...

Re: Wooddale Station Area / PLACE Proposal - St. Louis Park

That would be a huge loss for the city and the area and the SWLRT.

Unless there’s a for-profit vulture ready to swoop in.

A retrofit rom the engineer’s perspective.
If only we prioritized bikes & pedestrians over cars.

Re: Future Cars: Electric and Autonomous Vehicles

I used to think these were the coolest thing, and a great answer. But the more I learn about land use, transportation, and what we need to do for climate change, I think these will only be used in the very wealthiest areas, where people (1) refuse to bike in the open air, and (2) refuse to allow the...

I finally got a chance to see Cottageville Park, and I gotta say, the city really hit the ball out of the park. What a great urban park.

As for the 35 mph four-lane highway next to it 🤷‍♂️

https://www.apnews.com/c9c940d4b2544facaf60ea18dc03e0da A fire killed 5 children at a daycare over the weekend. … Now if you want to argue that the design should be different, or it shouldn't take up so much of the street frontage, or the play area should be tucked behind the building, that's fine....

Re: City Club Apartments - 1000 Marquette Ave (Handicraft Building)

Or it’s fine. Right?! Most buildings are ordinary. That’s fine. Sure, I’m not a fan of most dark patchwork buildings, but it’s a design trend and we mostly have to live with it. What really matters is buildings that, because of their size or location, stand out. Things like skyscrapers, “gateway” b...

Re: Southdale Area Development - Edina

Does the city zoning here not have minimums? That they can tear down what’s there, build less, by right? If so I’m LOLing. Yep. Building minimums were pulled out of the Southdale District plan guidelines at the last minute, since they were quite high (8 stories, I believe). But, clearly, there’s a ...

Re: Southdale Area Development - Edina

Those are good ideas. The city needs to do more. I just don’t want to build bad infrastructure that will hang around for 50 years. City leaders have done great things (like the Promenade), but it has to be more consistent, more part of a … comprehensive plan. 😉 The first step is throwing out the dou...

Re: Pentagon Park (Hwy 100 & Industrial Blvd) - Edina

Hopefully they'll at least reduce that frontage road to two lanes? It's a pretty silly 4LDR right now That’s not part of this project. The frontage road is presumably MNDOT controlled? And Viking Dr. is the southern border of Edina there, so presumably that would be a big, multi-jurisdictional proc...

Re: Pentagon Park (Hwy 100 & Industrial Blvd) - Edina

Yeah, I wasn’t a fan of the self-absorbed design. I pushed for the internal east-west street to at least go all the way through for bikes & peds, if not cars. And I wanted a safe north-south bicycle route that was direct, rather than the convoluted one they came up with. Along the same lines of what...

Imagine being a wheelchair user or stroller pusher on the west France sidewalk south of 66th: https://goo.gl/maps/zxfu15UBX5sLW75Z6 Not sure what you mean. Whenever the discussion goes to ground floor retail this far from the core of downtown, I always wonder what kind of commercial uses people are imagining would even be attracted to such spaces. Undoubtedly the Elliot Park area could use a decent grocery store and some small service oriented operati...

Re: Southdale Area Development - Edina

This project was MNDOT redecking the bridge, making the northbound lane safer, and making the eastbound onramp safer. I’m surprised it’s as nice as it is. If the E Line ends up going down France, then I imagine Hennepin & Edina will have a plan for upgrading sidewalks and lighting, including this br...

I assume Multimodal is insinuating that a daycare is too boring/inactive of a retail use to bless the sidewalk frontage of this building (Please do correct me if I'm wrong and that's not what you meant). That's patently absurd. This area and most of downtown is an absolute dead zone with vacant gro...

Is daycare a good use for a first floor?
As opposed to a second or higher floor? Yes. Imagine trying to evacuate a daycare with infants and toddlers using stairs verses a door straight to the sidewalk.
Is this very different from evacuating senior housing?
