Re: West End area - St. Louis Park / Golden Valley

The West End would probably do better if the site across the street wasn't an ode to 1970s suburban design and 2020s giant gas-powered SUVs (with not only a Costco, but a Costco gas station). When will Costco put in EV charging stations at the store , and reuse or sell the gas station for something ...

Re: Grandview District - Edina

Not really, it was pretty terrible from both a planning perspective and a resident perspective. The plans for the neighborhood (from a decade ago) called for mixed use, multistory buildings with underground parking. The overall project was a senior co-op (good, in theory, but more later) and a 2-sto...

Re: Uber/Lyft

Yep, that's pretty much it. But even without drivers, it does nothing to reduce VMT, wear & tear on streets, congestion, etc. Transit, biking, & walking are the future. Cars should have a much, much reduced role to play in transportation, even if they're EVs or autonomous or rideshare or wha...

Re: Highway Transitway Corridor Study

Highway BRT should replace freeway car lane(s) , otherwise it's just free money for the construction industry with little effect on modal usage. MNDOT and counties have climate action plans with goals to reduce VMT (vehicle miles traveled). If we're not replacing car lanes with bus lanes, we're not ...

Re: City living trends and predictions

Honestly, a rather small footprint, triangular, personal 5-over-1 with retail on the first floor is fine. The real post-apocalyptic, fuck-you-I'm-rich story is the conclusion to the article: "Matthew Segal and his wife moved into the [adjacent 2,900-square-foot, five-story single residence], wh...

Welcome, angrysuburbanite. Awesome name.

As hard as urbanism is to do in cities, it's twice as hard in suburbs. Welcome to the revolution.

Re: Southdale Area - Edina

Billionaires be billionaires. Having the Galleria & Southdale Mall compete for the many luxury retailers is good. Now if only they could treat the many workers and residents in the area with respect by (a) having a legit transit station on the county library property as part of its redevelopment...

Re: Subsidized and/or Affordable Housing

That’s good, but this seems suspicious: “The agency opened itself up to the private funding through the federal Rental Assistance Demonstration program, which transfers ownership of public housing buildings to a private entity. The private investors qualify for tax credits.” How does that benefit so...

Judging by the people I see in Microcenter and the products the store sells, the patrons seem to be above average wealth. There's a substantial overlap between people of above average wealth and those… … living in bright, shiny, new, expensive apartments & townhomes in Transit-Oriented Developm...

Re: Chanhassen - Chaska - Carver County

It makes you realize Costco’s profitability depends not on bringing inexpensive food to the masses, but rather encouraging the well to do to overspend on giant quantities of “bargains” that they transport in their oversized vehicles (justifying owning or leasing them) to store in their oversized hou...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

As always, it's wild when you compare the scale of the asks for highways versus the scale of the asks for transit, bike, and ped. Yeah, and is roadway capacity ‘strategic’ anymore? Should it be? Let’s #defundMNDOT and create a Multimodal Transportation Department instead. Too much baggage for MNDOT...

After further inspection, a couple more things: 1. “Bicycle friendly”. Why not “bicycle/ped/transit prioritized”? 2. Seems a shame there’s going to be so little retail. I get that Site C doesn’t need retail, but the frontage on Excelsior & Blake should have it. I know, I know: “retail is dead”. ...

To support startup firms trying to privatize transit, I can see Republicans supporting micromobility or self-driving cars/Uber.

It would be a fantastic change of heart to see them support BRT or LRT.

I don't see Micro Center choosing a smaller space. Especially not if the rent is higher and especially not if there's not lots of free surface parking. A lot of times the store is packed at it's present size. And the size is part of the attraction. Live in Chaska and need a new laptop? Drive in and...

Re: Hopkins - General Topics

I agree about way too much parking. But when Hennepin County has too many lanes on adjacent roadways (Blake & Excelsior) with no dedicated bus lanes, this area will continue to be all about cars, much like the next station down at 36th & Wooddale. High density, but fast, wide lanes for cars ...

Perfect location. Glad the Planning Commission approved it. Does it go to Council now, or is it done?

And, clearly, 3 stories is a skyscraper.

A lot of respondents already have a monthly bus pass, and caffeine is always welcome. How about a choice of a free day pass, fee weekend pass, or $5 off a monthly pass? (It would be interesting to know what percentage of riders have monthly passes.) Or support local businesses. Much like local taxi...

Not much in the way of urbanism. Is there a drive-thru at this bank?

Why do we tolerate state highways going through our cities? Kills all possibility of having real neighborhoods.

Why not receive a free all-day (or all-weekend) transit pass?
