Re: Rush Line Corridor BRT

How much travel time could be saved if all the signalized intersections on the route had bus preemption?

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

Looks like the first LRT cars for this are being delivered today. Are these cars identical to the previous Green Line cars? On the outside yes. On the inside there's bench seats in the middle section of the train. From a mechanical standpoint I don't know what, if anything, is different from the Ty...

It's almost like you can make something walkable without hurting people in cars if you can build pedestrian overpasses and multi-use trails to keep motorized and non-motorized traffic separate.
Are you suggesting we grade-separate every crosswalk? Just clarifying what you meant by that.

Re: Eagan, Apple Valley, Burnsville - General Topics

When suburbs say they want walkable it usually means "we'll build wide sidewalks and some fancy trails but we're going to keep widening roads because we like our cars and driving fast too much to give that up." I do like the roadway coming off southbound 35W just south of 42 that leads directly into...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

Again, this is a case where an at-grade rail crossing would make SO MUCH MORE SENSE. BNSF wouldn't allow it, and I don't blame them. Too many possible pedestrians and bikers that will try to beat the train, and these trains go up to 50 miles per hour on that segment. This rail line was built for sp...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

I know that BNSF won't allow it, but it's a silly reason to spend so much money on an overpass (not to mention the ongoing expenses to maintain it, plow snow off of it, etc.). By this logic, we should eliminate all crosswalks at highways, because that traffic is moving faster than 50 mph and is com...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

I was caught by surprise by the huge construction going on at Highway 101 between Flying Cloud Drive and Pioneer Trail. Lots of trees cut down and tons of dirt being moved, so I looked up what was going on. They're straightening the road, widening it to four lanes plus a trail, and a bridge over the...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

Where is this? Looks like St. Louis Park crossing over the BNSF tracks to connect Edgewood Avenue with the North Cedar Lake Trail. This particular segment has fencing along the south side of the tracks so the only way to get across is go up to the north-south Canadian Pacific rail line or go to Lou...

Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit

I'm sorry, but the notion that the sloped wall on the south side of the Midtown trench is somehow sacrosanct makes a parody of historic preservation. Just because something is old does not give it intrinsic veto power over any subsequent improvement. This is like the supposed "railroad historic dis...

Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit

Yes, and there's plenty of study demonstrating that there's enough space for that too. The MGC seems to let themselves get sidetracked by the most mundane details of the Greenway as-is: I know there's been opposition to removing the sloping sides and replacing them with retaining walls to better ac...

Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit

Going off of what was said in the Nicollet-Central Streetcar thread, does the Midtown Greenway Coalition consist of anyone who is an expert in transportation? Why should a coalition that seems to be going for fashion over function (in this case a single-track trolley over a double-track light rail) ...

Re: Highway Transitway Corridor Study

I can buy into the “leave farmland alone”. It’s apparently what’s done in Europe. What they call “suburbs” are more like small nearby cities & villages, out beyond a ring of farmland. I’m OK with that. So then do some of these distant suburban BRT lines (Stillwater, Lakeville?) essentially become t...

Re: Highway Transitway Corridor Study

I won't hold my breath on any development along Highway 36 in Stillwater being car-light and pedestrian-friendly. How about making the existing Downtown Stillwater car-light and pedestrian friendly while the area around Highway 36 is left as is; auto-centric and not friendly towards transit, pedest...

Re: Nicollet-Central Streetcar

Most other US streetcars suck because they implement little or no priority measures, operate in cities that have weak transit systems, and circulate low-population downtown areas. The Nicollet-Central streetcar as currently envisionsed is too short to be successful, but a longer one would take the ...

Re: Highway Transitway Corridor Study

Is it not obvious that the reason for this route would be to encourage new development in the undeveloped area surrounding Stillwater? This is why it’s funded by Washington County, right? If it would make this new development into a car-light, pedestrian-friendly area, it sounds like a good idea. M...

Re: Work from home and road congestion

I would prefer working from home and going to the office when needed, but I'm not sure that'll happen. In my current situation I think it would be pretty easy to do work from home, but the only issue would be getting easily distracted. Once this pandemic is over I wonder how many people will stick w...

Re: Grandview District - Edina

In a perfect world they would leave enough width for two tracks, a trail, and a station platform. I won't hold my breath on that, but at the very least it would be nice to have enough room for two tracks.
