Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

Does the trail have split lanes between Hennepin and Lyndale? IIRC, it's a single path, so not easy to get around the AV. They could've done this just a little bit west where the trail has separate lanes.

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

I'm sure people were overthinking when there was a proposed freeway through their neighborhood or their streetcar system was potentially going to shutdown.

Re: Fantasy maps

Here are some maps I made of potential stations on the Dan Patch Corridor, three of the stations could be used by other regional rail lines (Target Field or West MPLS and West End) and one of the stations is adjacent to another potential regional rail line (Savage). https://www.flickr.com/photos/141...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

Also, a lot of that article talks about getting people that aren't near existing transit spines. That is essentially a short distance automated taxi service provided with public dollars. That sounds like a tremendous waste to me. Yeah, it’s proposed as a last-mile solution, and then in the next bre...

Re: High Speed Rail MSP to Rochester

Or you just put it in the median of Highway 52. Right-of-way is already owned, and if we're talking conventional trains then no need to build a giant berm for the entire route. There are examples in Los Angeles (Metrolink) and New Mexico (RailRunner).

We better not be shelving the Midtown Greenway LRT for this.

Re: High Speed Rail MSP to Rochester

They chose the existing Empire Builder route, but while marketed as HSR it wouldn't be. It would actually be 110 mph service and additional frequency, which is an improvement, but lets not fool the public into thinking we'll have bullet trains that can get you to Chicago in 4 hours.

Re: High Speed Rail MSP to Rochester

If we wanted to use only existing rail then the best route would probably be from SPUD onto the Union Pacific Spine Line to Owatonna and then CP/former DM&E trackage to Rochester. Would still require upgrades, but would probably be the cheapest rail option. Agree 100% with tmart. There is absolutely...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

If people are making the argument that transit shouldn't be expanded with autonomous cars coming, why are we widening roads? Gotta love the anti-transit double standard in this country.

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Anyone else go to the Carver County Transportation Summit? I only saw the last 20 minutes when they were talking about Southwest LRT, Southwest Transit, and how autonomous vehicles will change transportation. Also got a pamphlet about the Southwest Corridor Transportation Coalition. Never heard of t...

Re: MN Highway 7

Are there any improvements planned at that intersection? Grade separation or a pedestrian bridge or tunnel?

I've drove through that area multiple times and I agree, if you're going really fast you better hope there isn't a car stopped beyond the hill or prepare to test your brakes.

Re: Minnesota Transportation Funding (General)

How about less environmental reviews for projects that are supposed to help the environment by giving a cleaner option of travel (LRT).

Or do we still have to do studies on light rail impacting gravel pits and an impound lot?

Re: Minnesota Transportation Funding (General)

Simple question here, and I apologize if this has already been discussed: Can the state and/or federal gas tax be used to fund the operations and/or construction of transit? I was looking at Lakeville's Legislative Priorities and this caught my eye: "The operating costs of the transit system are pai...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

But BNSF and CP already built the alternative to the Crystal connection. Not surprisingly people in NE Minneapolis were pissed, but its a situation where NIMBYs have to pick their poison. So why would BNSF still want that connection?

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

Now what was the reason for them backing out? Wanted another crashwall, anti-rail GOP legislators wanted them to back out in an attempt to kill this project, or something else? The Monticello Sub. is only used by two roundtrip freights per day; one a very short segment and connecting with the Luce L...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Will Metro Transit and the opt-out operators be posting ridership data from Super Bowl week? I'm interested in seeing ridership with the extra service.

Also how did the Super Bowl LRT operations go? Besides the protest and long line for security check it looked like it went well.

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

That's the model we should look to, not the unicorn of LRT on concrete. This myth is only going to die when we stop promoting transit's development benefits. Otherwise we wouldn't be trying to spend millions to make a bus appear more 'permanent', and we wouldn't have a mayor choosing a starter stre...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Wasn't the Red Line originally coined BRT? Even though it would probably get an awful score by the Institute for Transportation & Development Policy especially after going from 15 minute headways to 20 minute headways. https://www.itdp.org/library/standards-and-guides/the-bus-rapid-transit-standard/...
