Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

Well the Holiday Train was packed, which is good and hopefully it means it'll return next year, or maybe make it a daily occurrence. ;) The only problem was crowd control at SPUD when we arrived and departed. Going back north the trip was around 10 minutes faster. Who else rode? I went Fridley-SPUD-...

Re: Saint Paul Union Depot

Never has SPUD felt like Penn Station until tonight. Massive crowd coming and going on the Northstar Holiday Train. With only two staircases and one elevator to the platform it may be wise to plan another entry if/when SPUD gets major commuter and intercity rail service. I'm thinking a bridge or tun...

Re: Nicollet-Central Streetcar

City should focus on the B, C, and D better bus lines, and start pushing the Met Council to begin the formal planning and design process for Midtown rail. All of those projects will do far more for transportation and development than a streetcar. The money collected for the streetcar could be spent...

Re: Northern Lights Express

Isn't the Iron Range pretty liberal? Granted that's on the American political spectrum, whereas if you put it on the Norwegian political spectrum they would be moderate if not slightly to the right.

Re: Northern Lights Express

What I'm proposing may look unrealistic to the average American, but I'm sure the average European or Asian would think it makes complete sense. But the line would supposedly serve average Americans, so if they don't see the point it's hard to imagine it working to any degree. Well hopefully they'l...

Re: Northern Lights Express

What some people consider fantasy is reality in other places. What I'm proposing may look unrealistic to the average American, but I'm sure the average European or Asian would think it makes complete sense. I think its good to discuss how NLX can be more attractive on the northern end with transit c...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

I'd like Route 10 to serve Fridley Station. Not all buses, just at times when a train is serving the station. Currently Route 10 is just outside acceptable walking distance to/from Fridley Station. I've done it before, but I like walking and I wasn't in a hurry to get anywhere.

Re: Northern Lights Express

Its great that there are regional and intercity buses, but its still a bus. And the routes only run once per day, maybe twice per day. Rail bias is real. I'm fine taking a bus, but if there's also a rail option usually I'll take the train. The average American won't even consider the bus. Would peop...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

In a perfect world people would be grateful to bus drivers. The key word being perfect, which is the exact opposite of the world we live in.

I've only experienced the safety shields on buses in London and Edinburgh. Anyone seen them in other places?

Re: Northern Lights Express

I do agree with tmart's point that if the current incentivizing of auto travel stays then it'll be difficult to expand transit in NE Minnesota. With that we kind of have to wait and see in terms of autonomous cars, alternative fuel sources, and how we get tax revenues for maintaining roads. MNdible,...

Care to explain why? Just because the roads aren't congested doesn't mean people don't want alternatives.

Re: Northern Lights Express

Here are transit improvements I thought of on the Iron Range: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1X57cHyY7xQLT3zcvKmGJeGAQLU0&usp=sharing As tmart said Duluth would be a northern hub for bus and rail. While the bus line to Thunder Bay isn't as great as a rail line (especially HSR), it would save us a ...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

So three derailments from the Blue Line, and one derailment from the Green Line. Is that a good safety record?

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Light rail train derailed in Downtown Minneapolis. Looks to be a Blue Line train since its with Type 1 LRVs. No Blue/Green Line service into downtown at this time.

Re: Dan Patch Intercity Regional Passenger Rail

Not sure who is familiar with this line, but do you think there is any potential for rail transit on the northern section of the corridor? Specifically north of St. Louis Park through Golden Valley, New Hope, and Crystal via the existing CP tracks. The route seems to have a little bit higher density...

Re: Red Line (Cedar Avenue BRT)

Was there ever an exact routing in mind when the McAndrews LRT was being looked at? I know it was supposed to serve the Minnesota Zoo, but since thats off the main corridor that would be pretty difficult.

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT) & Lake St Transit Access Project

Also on the bright side is a direct trail connection between the Lake Street Station and Midtown Greenway. Many times I've carried my bike up and down the steps to/from the "bus stop" on 35W, and either option to get to the Greenway wasn't great; bike along Lake Street to 1st Avenue to Nicollet, or ...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

If buses can be rerouted and the travel time is less or the same as Nicollet Mall then I fully support a pedestrian-only Nicollet Mall (as long as people can still bike through there). Considering buses go 15 miles per hour maximum on that stretch it probably wouldn't be too difficult.
