Re: Nicollet-Central Streetcar

Being in Oslo for four months and taking the tram on a frequent basis, there was never a time when a vehicle was blocking the tracks for a long period (more than a minute). Perhaps I was lucky, or maybe the streetcar has been part of daily Oslo life for so long that motorists respect its existence, ...

Re: Nicollet-Central Streetcar

I probably should have used the Atlanta streetcar as a better example. The Atlanta streetcar is an excellent example of how poorly conceived some of these projects are. It looks great and seems to connect viable transit nodes, but because it is not truly intended as a means of transportation the tr...

Re: Tunnels!

Depends on who you ask and what location, but I think public transit is pretty cheap. Plus there are already ads on buses and trains, sometimes annoyingly wrapped all over the outside so its hard to see out. But maybe you're thinking more along the lines of minding your own business on the bus or tr...

Hopkins O&M facility being scaled back to cut costs. Or they could just, you know, scrap the stupid tunnel in Kenilworth.

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

I think the truth on streetcars is somewhat more positive than transit wonks make it out to be, even if the drawbacks (namely, capital cost) are real. They're not bad transit. They're equally fast as a bus, can have higher capacity, can be run carbon-free, and have lower operating costs. They also ...

Re: MSP Airport

Northwest and/or Delta tried MSP-MEX years ago. Didn't last long, but hopefully with the joint venture with AeroMexico it has a better chance.

AeroMexico even applied to start MSP-MEX a decade ago. They got approval, but never started it.

Re: Tunnels!

I like the idea of upgrading the existing freight railroad right-of-way for faster and more frequent commuter service. Assuming the tunnels are narrow, then that makes it impossible to modify it with larger vehicles, though they could do what Budapest does with their Metro Line 1. I like to call the...

Wonder if it would be better if some of the express routes were detoured onto Hiawatha Avenue instead? Isn't there a shoulder they can use in case traffic is really bad?

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Besides Valley West and Creekside Community Center I don't see any place where a 40 foot bus would have difficulty on that route, plus it would only be a temporary sub so people don't have to wait 30 minutes for the next bus going east. Also there was a brief period a couple years ago when I saw 35 ...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Rode the 539 today, and the bus before mine rear ended a car at Old Shakopee & Xerxes. Didn't look like there were any injuries and the only damage was to the bike rack. The riders on that bus had to wait half an hour for the bus I was on. First Transit's bus garage is in St. Paul, so it wouldn't he...

Re: Metro Transit Service Improvement Plan 2014

To add to my previous post: Route 2-Extend north via University Avenue and 40th Avenue to Columbia Heights Transit Center. Route 83-Extend to Rosedale Transit Center. This has been discussed in the urban bus route improvement thread, and this would make the route a lot more attractive to potential r...

Re: U.S. Highway 169

I had very little faith in this project, and seeing that there is no station for Pioneer Trail or Anderson Lakes Parkway makes me lose the rest. Its not as flashy, but just run a limited-stop service along the corridor like Route 535. It would be much slower, but much less cost (regular bus stop sig...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

It wouldn't necessarily have to be in the median of the highway (or at least not for the whole route), just along it. The existing alignment follows Highway 212, but its not on the highway.
