Re: Midtown Corridor Rail & Lake Street aBRT (B Line)

With all the studying done over the years you would think they would know to set aside some ROW to interline Midtown LRT into Southwest LRT. However anything built can be destroyed (legally of course), and by that I mean this area could always be modified so there can be interlining. Obviously more ...

Re: Northstar Commuter Rail

I just realized the Northstar Holiday Train operates five days after the last day of the Union Depot Holiday Market. Anyone want to find the logic? To answer my own question, they at least had vendors inside the depot and some entertainment for the kids. According to Metro Transit this year's Holid...

Re: Midtown Corridor Rail & Lake Street aBRT (B Line)

We really are terrible at thinking ahead sometimes. As late as the 80s the West Lake area had room for at least six tracks. See this aerial photo-http://geo.lib.umn.edu/minneapolis/1983/1983_091A.jpg However couldn't they just modify 31st Street to allow a single track through there to connect with ...

Re: Midtown Corridor Rail & Lake Street aBRT (B Line)

I don't know how we'll integrate Midtown LRT and the Blue Line, but with the western end while there would be separate platforms at least it's easy to merge the Midtown LRT into the Green Line heading west. it seems completely pointless that the midtown line be connecting to the other lines to use ...

Re: Midtown Greenway

Since we're sharing ideas, my plan has been to build a wye track and a separate station as close as possible to Lake Street/Midtown and have a skyway connecting the two stations so transferring isn't a pain. All Midtown Greenway trains would turn into the wye, stop at the station, and then the drive...

Re: C Line - Penn Avenue North Rapid Bus

I’m following down the line... sure it’s NIMBY but would it also have some YIMBY? With the overhead lines it REALLY solidified that the line isn’t moving. (One of the knocks against buses vs rail) That's one reason why I like trolleybuses; permanence. Also having traveled to Budapest they have nume...

Re: C Line - Penn Avenue North Rapid Bus

IMO this is one of the underappreciated arguments for trolleybuses, streetcars, and other forms of electric rail. Electric propulsion is great, but not all electric propulsion is created equal. The ideal case for the environment is to transmit the energy to the vehicle while it's in motion, rather ...

Re: Southdale Area Development - Edina

Anyone know the details about this upcoming France Ave bridge work? http://www.dot.state.mn.us/metro/projects/hwy62andfranceavebridge/index.html It says there will be sidewalk and accessibility improvements. Pedestrian and bike access across this bridge is so terrible it should be a source of shame...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

Obviously things could change especially when the Green Line Extension opens, but Southwest Transit's couple attempts at local routes have failed miserably and I'm not sure how their two flex routes are currently doing. Maybe one or two fixed-route circulators within Eden Prairie could work, but it ...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

Economists like to think that human beings are perfectly rational beings, but we are not. We are creatures of habit. As any NIMBY-fighter will tell you, humans hate change. Especially change to their daily routine. So the express bus might be a little faster. Whoopee. Once people realize (from frie...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

Regarding suburban commuters to downtown, most who use the express bus will stick with that. However there are people who commute outside peak time, those who suddenly have to get back home for whatever reason, and those who want to stick around in downtown for whatever reason. Those people will tak...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

No one ever said weather is the only cause. Another major cause are the freight railroads. Sure they have to give Amtrak priority, but if it's a single track line and there's a freight train coming then Amtrak might have to take the siding and wait. Even worse is if a freight train breaks down or de...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

It's fine for people who want to ride the train all day or are traveling to the minor stops. Looking at the feasibility study, the optimized option is only offset by four hours from the existing train. I think that the limited difference in schedule means that many of the riders are going to shift ...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

It is possible to reroute the Empire Builder (and any other TC-Chicago train) via O'Hare Airport using existing track. There would need to be a junction built in Des Plaines to get back to the original route to Milwaukee, and trains would skip Glenview. I don't know how much of a gain or loss it wou...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

The fall in ridership since 2012 is a bit of a headwind to adding additional service. Maybe if it wasn't a joke compared to other modes of travel there would actually be good ridership? It doesn't help that when buying a ticket for the Empire Builder you're betting on it not being hours late, espec...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

Why all the money and time to study this second train? Because bureaucracy BS aimed at slowing it down. Meanwhile an airline could add a MSP-Chicago flight tomorrow (assuming any of Chicago's airports has a slot open), and a bus company could easily add another roundtrip between the Twin Cities and ...

Re: Hiawatha-Minnehaha Ave Development & RR Corridor/Grain Elevators

Based on just looking on Google Earth, the majority of the track is just for storing the hopper cars that go through the ADM mills. Besides that its just the "mainline" track so locomotives can actually get to those hopper cars, and the spurs to unload grain and the one spur for the metal recycling ...
