Re: Future Cars: Electric and Autonomous Vehicles

Not totally on board with these posts being moved. I was hoping to bring this back around to Sam, where I started it, and discuss the assumptions that he and his colleagues on the planning commission are working from. It's uplifting to hear him say that we should be more like New York or Paris, but ...

Re: Electric Scooters

During the recent open street event I was walking up Garfield to save time getting home and saw a pair parked diagonally on the sidewalk leaving less than a foot on either side. Hated 'em. A few minutes later a couple zipped past me at full speed with an inch to spare. Hated 'em again. Two days late...

Re: Minneapolis City Planning Commission

Xandrex, I generally agree about the benefits outweighing the harm, but there are times when it just doesn't seem worth it, like when you're on the downwind side of 6 lanes of idling cars by the Walker and getting all the fumes from the tunnel. FWIW, the several people I've talked to who have mentio...

Re: Electric Scooters

i rode one at open streets for the first time, but i'm not sure i'd do one in traffic. Too fast for the sidewalk, too slow for the street. When I see them I'm often reminded of what Steve Jobs said about the Segway when it was introduced: "people will build cities around these!" Or at least make th...

Re: Minneapolis City Planning Commission

Those are very real concerns, and they also need to be addressed, but the bad effects of breathing the exhaust from cars trucks and buses are real and well documented. When you guys hit a cloud of stinky exhaust do you hold your breath or just breathe it in? When I get a whiff of diesel I just try t...

Re: Minneapolis City Planning Commission

What I'm trying to say is that is that the switch to BEV's may have a lot of additional leverage, in the sense that you're not trading electric miles for gas/diesel miles on a one to one basis. I'm suggesting that when you no longer have to take deep breaths of toxic haze to ride a bicycle people wi...

Re: Minneapolis City Planning Commission

Sam Rockwell in the Strib: http://www.startribune.com/we-have-to-get-over-cars-to-save-the-planet/510640872/ Up to this point I had considered him to be a deep thinker. Apparently he hasn't considered how much more bicycling and walking would be done if breathing tailpipe emissions wasn't a prerequi...

Re: Subsidized and/or Affordable Housing

Employers who think they are getting free lunch by pinching pennies on pay will no doubt complain loudly about the additional tax burden.

Is John Edwards a real person? I always viewed him as a sort of mythical figure, kind of like Tyler Durden of ZeroHedge.

Re: What's Your Take On Minneapolis E-Democracy?

I'm not sure I understand why anonymity is relevant here. Neither the wedgelive youtube channel nor the "Times Picayune" website offer any clues about who is operating them and the whois info is hidden. Whoever operates these things really, really doesn't want people to know who they are. The same g...

I think Carol is pretty proud of leading the "resistance". I don't think she wants to hide anything.

Especially funny since it's incredibly easy to have your hosting provider register as the ICANN owner on your behalf to prevent this sort of embarassment.
What, wait, is there some kind of embarrassment taking place here? Did I miss something?

Article states they likely won't get the $69.5M that they paid for it in 2014.
I wonder why they're jumping ship?![/color]

Sean, can you share anything about the other deal?

Re: Minnesota Transportation Funding (General)

The most interesting carve out in the exempt list is the "passenger snowmobiles" one, specifying vehicles capable of carrying 4-12 passengers (presumably a Hagglunds or a Snowcat of some kind). I guess if your vehicle can carry 13 passengers or more, you're no longer exempt?

Re: 2019-2020 MN Legislative Session / Budget / Bonding

Raising the gas tax isn't done very often because it hits people in rural areas whose lives are built around hauling heavy loads in gas guzzling pickup trucks, and also poor people who can't afford to buy newer more efficient vehicles. The impact on affluent residents of the metro is negligible, hen...

The 20 cents per gallon is presumably to speed the adoption of BEV's?
