Re: New developments seem to have terrible balconies

I always kind of assumed they were for smoking, but I never even see anybody using them for that.

Skyways.

So very last century?
Perhaps. But pulling on your parka and mittens to walk four frozen blocks is definitely from the century before that.

Re: Bicyclist Demographics (and popular image)

I live a pretty sheltered life and didn't know about the existence of "MPLS Bike Wrath" until today. Evidently this guy decided to ride down the middle of the lane on Lyndale and do an "educational" session with some drivers:

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

So, according to a couple of posts above there is zero interest from builders in doing fourplexes? And Frey and Bender just want to throw this zoning change out there and see if anybody bites?

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

Are any business interests lobbying for fourplexes? Maybe a push from the builders would put it over the top?

Re: Scooter sharing

I saw a Lime last night. Riding down the sidewalk.

Maybe they can add some software which will automatically steer them down the sidewalk at 15 MPH without hitting anybody. That would truly be progress!

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

He called a guy who saved a bunch of kids a pedo because he made fun of his dumb rocket booster submarine/coffin. The Tesla Model S is a pretty neat $80K car, but most $80K cars are pretty neat. Somehow they are building 5000 model 3s a week but no where near that many are being registered. He is a...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

Elon Musk has racked up enough bona fide provable successes to disqualify him from being a charlatan. Jia Yueting *is* a charlatan. Faraday Future is 100% pure vapor and has delivered nothing. They aren't even doing Formula E anymore. Elon Musk is a tragic visionary who chronically overpromises and ...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

Asking your suppliers to pay you back profits they've already booked because you're running out of cash: a normal thing that non-distressed companies do all the time. https://www.wsj.com/articles/tesla-asks-suppliers-for-cash-back-to-help-turn-a-profit-1532301091 You seem to have an axe to grind re...

Re: Bicyclist Demographics (and popular image)

It is worth noting that most of the people who ride a bicycle for strictly economic reasons would probably drive a car if they could afford to. Making the world a better place by riding a bike is a pretty minor consideration, if they think of it at all. It's mainly the millennials and fitness orient...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

The insane amount of construction has meant that buses have spent much more time than usual crawling along at 5 MPH in traffic, and I think people are doing anything they can to avoid taking that ride.

The trains, meanwhile, are largely unaffected, which makes riding them even more attractive.

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

For many of the aging owners of those single family homes it's the only store of wealth they have, and they are going to need to sell those homes to pay for their end of life expenses (or their heirs will). Even without any Freyplexes supply and demand will be much more closely matched over the next...

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

By 2040 roughly 75% of those homeowners will be dead or in assisted living and none of this will matter. Their heirs who will inherit these properties mostly have a very different worldview.

Re: Scooter sharing

Maybe if the Segway arrived in a blast of hoopla today with the greatly expanded bike lane system we have it might fulfill the original vision. My current biggest concern is that once people start zipping around on electric scooters on bike paths, we'll see a surge in privately owned gasoline powere...

Re: Scooter sharing

Steve Jobs had biting criticism for the Segway behind the scenes, but when it was introduced he diplomatically proclaimed "people will design cities around these!", tacitly implying that the only way they could work in an urban environment would involve a fairly radical redesign.

I'm not quite up to speed on these. Obviously they don't fit comfortably out with the cars on the street or on the sidewalk. So, the plan is for people to ride these in bike lanes?

Re: trees in Atlanta

How about if government started giving away points for every tree a citizen plants ? which could be redeemable at any place to buy grocery may be. This is a noble sentiment, but I think the whole point of this thread is that as density increases there is less area available which is suitable for tr...
