Re: 2017-18 MN Legislative Session & Budget - Battle for the Senate Majority?

I think Fischbach is saying that IF she is removed from the Senate, THEN she will step down from Lt. Gov and then run for her old seat. Since the legislature is not in session right now, there would temporarily be no Senate President, and I doubt the constitution has further instructions for chain s...

Lawsuit filed to boot Fischbach from Senate: https://blogs.mprnews.org/capitol-view/ ... dual-role/

Fischbach has previously said she will step down as Lt. Gov and run in the special election for her seat if one is called.

Re: Minneapolis City Politics General Discussion

1. Bender as Council Prez and then assigning Public Safety to Cano... what am I missing here? I thought that relationship was pretty frayed. The wishful cynic in me says it looks like Cano is being set up to fail (by sticking her foot in her mouth so hard she'd be forced out), but I doubt that's the...

I was also struck by the awful branding. I don't care if that's the family's last name, it's too folksy sounding for a classy-ish location like France Ave. Perfect fit for the horribly bland design and color palette.

Re: Ritz Residences - 365 Nicollet Mall (334' - 30 stories)

I'd much prefer RBC (plus some housing or hotel on top of the office component if possible, but whatevs if not) on the remainder of this Opus block, rather than winding up in United's flawed Gateway proposal on the Nicollet Hotel block

Re: 1400 Park Avenue

Drove by this one again & saw that the old building is still standing. Given the involvement of a national apartment developer/investor (Weidner), I figured this one was unlikely to dematerialize. It's been pretty quiet since their approvals in August '16. Current land use approvals expire this Augu...

Re: 2017-18 MN Legislative Session & Budget - Battle for the Senate Majority?

Per MPR News today, it looks like Tom Bakk is not going along with the GOP's idea to call a special session to elect a DFLer as Senate President, who would immediately become Lt. Gov. and resign from the Senate. Even if Bakk and the DFL were on board with this "compromise", it would have to be a DFL...

Anyone know if the JCPenney teardown / Lifetime Fitness construction will result in removal of the current parking deck there? I thought I'd seen that the Lifetime building was going to have a smaller footprint than the old JCP. Anyone got a link to a City Council agenda / site plans for the Lifetim...

Re: 2017-18 MN Legislative Session & Budget - Battle for the Senate Majority?

So you think Dayton still would have appointed Smith if the DFL had control of the MN Senate? I'm not saying he definitely wouldn't have appointed her, but it would have changed the stakes considerably. Right now, it's looking like Smith's 2018 opponent will be Karin Housley or Tim Pawlenty. Pawlent...

Re: Uptown Retail & Restaurant News

I figured Tum Rup Thai wouldn't stick around forever after its sister Roat Osha moved into Calhoun Square just a block away. I'm almost certain they have the same ownership, if not identical menus too. Both restaurants are in tax delinquency with the state. Hopefully the closure of Tum Rup is enough...

Re: 2017-18 MN Legislative Session & Budget - Battle for the Senate Majority?

So, as we all know, Tina Smith will be leaving her Lt Gov post to replace Al Franken in the US Senate. The MN Constitution calls for the State Senate President (currently Michelle Fischbach, a Republican) to fill the Lt Gov vacancy. The MN Constitution also says the Lt Gov cannot simultaneously hold...

Even if Frey wasn't declaring this project dead, it would still be sitting on the shelf for years to come, because politics. The optics of tearing up Nicollet AGAIN, after we just went through 2 years of construction, are extremely bad! There is no way the project was going to have ANY political sup...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Excellent point, but what do they do on the train? Answer: nothing. Absolutely legitimate concerns on both sides (pro-shield and shield-skeptical), but I haven't heard a persuasive argument why bus drivers should be viewed any differently than train drivers. In general, the less interaction the driv...

Could we, as a group, maybe, just maybe, refrain from posting about fantasy extensions to routes that haven't yet been built, or even funded? It's fine to have those thoughts in your head (and maybe even whip up a map for your own personal enjoyment), but I am really not sold on the value of broadca...

Re: Thrivent's Surface Parking Lots

What does this mean for some other County owned buildings? For example the Family Justice Center sits on a lot that is over half the size of the block. That would a nice property to get back on the tax rolls.... I doubt the FJC would move in the near future. Even though it's a Hennepin County build...

Re: Thrivent's Surface Parking Lots

I was kinda hoping that they'd build the new HQ on the 1/4-block lot and sell off the full block for development, but the inclusion of a skyway connection on the new parking ramp development was a pretty clear indication that the HQ was destined for the full block. Off-topic: You never hear about it...

Re: Cedar Ave - Nokomis Area

Good sandwiches, but overpriced and a downright terrible location for this type of business. Did they even bother putting up a sign? I think they completely misread the neighborhood on price-point, foot traffic, everything. Decent enough concept, which might've had a chance in North Loop, Old St. An...

Re: Residences at 33 S 5th St, 40 floors. 451 feet

In a way, it is kinda similar to their most recent projects (602 N 1st St and 3009 Holmes), just extruded up 40 stories. Both of those projects involved teardown & construction on tight, midblock sites without a lot of wiggle room. The downtown one is obviously much more challenging due to the heigh...
