What? The Great Purple One himself attended Bryant Junior High, the building now called the "Sabathani Community Center".
Aw poop, I figured someone would school me in history. Of course Bryant neighborhood was named after a former school.

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

I generally agree with MNdible on this forum, but I can't do that here. It seems like you're drawing a fine line between the City (staff) just doing a better job of explaining the plan vs. hiring a 3rd-party vendor to do the explaining. I don't see a difference. The elected officials that support th...

Re: Uptown General Topics & Development Map

I had fully convinced myself that I was the first person to propose "SOUP", until I searched the forum and saw you posted this same map back in 2013. Your map definitely planted the seed, because I was suggesting SOUP as far back as 2015. Earlier this year, I did suggest it directly to the CARAG boa...

Re: Harlem Irving and CA Ventures - 240 Hennepin Ave - 18-20 stories

Not sure I get the obsession with "holding the corner" here. Having a tower mass jammed right up to the corner doesn't help anybody, and by the time the rest of this block gets developed (and if the Gateway block goes ahead), having some variation in height and some breathing room will be just fine...

Re: Uptown General Topics & Development Map

Probably Public Works not wanting them to become "intersections", because then they'd have to install crosswalk ramps, move the "no parking" signs further north in many cases to accommodate the new curb cuts/ramps, etc. I fully agree that this is a dumb policy. Clearly the promenade enjoys strong fo...

Re: Hiawatha-Minnehaha Ave Development & RR Corridor/Grain Elevators

Nice map! I didn't go to the meeting Tuesday night, so I don't know how it went (assume very poorly). LCC has scheduled another, much longer meeting for October 9: https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/fr/cp0/e15/q65/41099643_10156291075870266_8816633986768961536_o.jpg?_nc_cat=0&efg=eyJpIjoi...

Re: Hiawatha-Minnehaha Ave Development & RR Corridor/Grain Elevators

Reminder: LCC n’hood meeting this Tuesday at 7:30 to discuss both of the above projects. Longfellow Park - 36th Ave & 35th St. A bunch of people are going to show up and talk about the traffic and parking issues caused by the popularity of Minnehaha Falls park, and try to use that as excuses why the...

A peek at the site plan for 4757 Hiawatha (Bridgeman's/SomTaste replacement): https://www.dropbox.com/s/xqo3jd24enmp1jt/4757%20Hiawatha%20-%20Hiawatha%20Ave%20Apartments%20-%20site%20plan.pdf?dl=0 6 stories baby! I'm still a bit disappointed that there isn't a more comprehensive vision for reworking...

Re: Southside - General Topics

There are two additional developments in this same general area that will be presented at the September 4 LCC meeting : https://i.imgur.com/NlO9Mzn.png The one that makes me nervous is the Reuter Walton project on the restaurant site (most recently 'SomTaste'). I don't love the idea of that site bei...

Re: Grocery Stores

The many franchise locations owned by Jerry's Foods wouldn't be changing hands, but there's still uncertainty as to what will happen to the Cub brand name when United Natural Foods eventually divests the Supervalu corporate-owned Cub stores. If someone like Hyvee bought the corporate Cubs, they'd be...

Re: Nicollet Ave / Eat Street - Whittier, Stevens, Loring Park

It would be interesting to get a full list of Mpls restaurants that have gotten the exemption from the “7 contiguous acres of commercial zoning” rule. Also interesting that the way this exception is obtained is through state legislation, rather than through the city (the 7 acres rule comes from the ...

Re: Gold Line BRT (Gateway Corridor)

I really like the idea of extending Gold to Minneapolis and cancelling the 94. Will really make sense when the MnPass lanes are opened. Has there been any confirmation by Gold Line staff (or Metro Transit staff) that this is, in fact, the long term plan? It makes a lot of sense, and a lot of us her...

Re: Minnesota Governor Election 2018

Getting ranked choice for primaries is definitely our best shot at further reducing the power of party endorsements. With ranked-choice primaries, I bet a lot more candidates would stop "pledging to drop out if another candidate is endorsed". After a few cycles of that, you'd think the party would h...

Re: Avenues- Replace Numbers With Names

34th could be Humphrey Ave, right? Maybe Wenonah Ave for 28th? Or is there already a street somewhere with that name? I was thinking Chamberlain Ave (Wold-Chamberlain). Weenonah (yes with the extra "e") & Keewaydin are taken. Another theme option to continue could be US cities. We have Chicago, Por...

Re: Avenues- Replace Numbers With Names

I'd 100% be on board renaming the major Avenues of 28th & 34th on the west side of Hiawatha, and I'd be one of the people having to change my address. I don't know the Longfellow area (east of Hiawatha) as well, but over there I imagine the most obvious candidates for named streets are 36th Ave (sou...

Re: Mortenson / USBank site - 333 Hennepin Ave E (290' - 26 stories)

I suspect that there is a discrepancy between public works dept's signage-making practices and the city's addressing standard. The city already has Minneapolis Addressing Standard v1.22 that says all directional markers should be used as suffixes. Also, I don't understand why named streets in "Sout...

Re: Mortenson / USBank site - 333 Hennepin Ave E (290' - 26 stories)

Shouldn't there be some consistency in where the cardinal direction is placed? Lyndale Ave S. Fremont Ave N. Why should Hennepin Ave E be written differently? It's 100% fine if people call it "East Hennepin" colloquially, to distinguish from other parts of Hennepin Ave, but consistency in the offici...

Re: Nicollet Mall

I sometimes wonder if allowing the newer office buildings on the west side of Nicollet between 8th-11th was a big mistake. I'm talking about US Bancorp Center, 900-950 Nicollet (former Retek on the Mall), and Target Plaza South. The towers themselves and the influx of workers are great. I just wonde...

Re: Southside - General Topics

I think what it comes down to is that the "faux dive bar" concept is dumb and unwelcome. It's a misread of the type/caliber of restaurant that could work in that location. Maybe I'm wrong, but I've convinced myself that a large percentage of the late-era customers of Sunrise Inn did not actually liv...

Re: Southside - General Topics

Tap beer selection is weaker than it should be (and wastes taps on crap like Old Style). But more importantly, the food menu is just way too limited. Especially if you're not a beef eater, you have like 2 or 3 things you can eat (my GF is basically vegetarian + chicken). I don't mean to say they sho...
