Re: Suburban City Councils, shenanigans

I think we can all agree that both RCV (no primary) and "Top 2" nonpartisan/"jungle" primaries are WAAAAY better than the current system we have for state and national partisan elections (first past the post, choosing the lesser of evils, reluctance to support 3rd party candidates, etc.) We need to ...

Re: 38th Street Corridor & 38th St Station Development

I still don't see a reason for either direction of the 23 to loop through the site. I'm definitely sympathetic to the desire to end the looping and have bus stops on the street, BUT Unless you're going to widen the street for bus bays that would allow buses to pull completely out of the traffic lan...

Re: Suburban City Councils, shenanigans

I am a supporter of ranked choice (particularly for partisan legislative/congressional/executive elections), but wouldn't support that here. Nonpartisan "Top 2" primary elections are fairly ideal. What cities in MN ought to do to save money (instead of ranked choice) is to simply not hold the genera...

Re: Prospect Park - General Topics

Props to Peter Callaghan for a really well-written article. He succinctly sums up why staff took the position they did, and why the Planning Commission decided to go against the staff recommendation. Staff doesn't make policy; that's the role of policymakers (City Council & Planning Commission). Sta...

Re: East End / Thresher Square / Trader Joes - 713 Washington Ave S

I'm pretty excited too. While there are certainly closer grocery stores to me, the Blue Line trip is just 11 minutes from 46th to USB Stadium (plus 4-5 minute walk time on either end). Very doable for an occasional trip to Trader Joes, even if my primary store is somewhere closer to home.

Re: Uptown General Topics & Development Map

Here's a neat thing I spotted last weekend but forgot to post. There appears to be a small juice business in a Greenway-facing space in Elan (middle building with the fancy ped bridge). While it probably largely caters to residents of Elan and adjacent bro-plexes, it does appear to be open to the pu...

Re: Hiawatha-Minnehaha Avenue Development & Grain Elevators/Freight Corridor

I'll just further add that in the grand scheme of "development along the Blue Line", 42nd Street and on the wrong side of Hiawatha (this site) is about as far from a station platform as you can get. This site just isn't that accessible to the Blue Line, with a walk time over 10 minutes. I'm not sayi...

Re: Hiawatha-Minnehaha Avenue Development & Grain Elevators/Freight Corridor

From the U-Haul project staff report: The site is zoned I1, Light Industrial District and is located in the IL Industrial Living Overlay District. In the I1 zoning district, self-storage is a permitted use while truck rental requires a conditional use permit. The maximum height limitation in the I1 ...

Re: Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board

Lake Maka Ska is obviously the ideal compromise solution. I don't get the rigid insistence on using "Bde" at all. It means "lake" for F's sake! There's not a single other lake in MN that doesn't use the word "Lake" in it. Why would this one bde different? Now, I haven't actually suggested this publi...

Even though I live right by this site and would see it all the time, I'd support it if it meant UHaul would sell their Nicollet & 36th location for development. #greatergood

Re: Minnesota Governor Election 2018

Ramsey County Commissioner Blake Huffman (GOP - Shoreview) is running for Governor. I don't think he'll get the nomination, but then again Jeff Johnson managed to do so just 4 years ago. I don't truly know where he's at politically, but on the surface he seems like a moderate. I haven't read anythin...

Re: Hiawatha-Minnehaha Avenue Development & Grain Elevators/Freight Corridor

The "Wash Me" self car wash (across 42nd from Star 1 Automotive) would be a good development site too, and wouldn't require any assembly with other sites. At .57 acre (minus unfortunate overhead powerline easements), it's large enough to develop on its own. Vehicle access would be a challenge, as th...

I assumed the reporter phrased it that way since the West Elm Hotel has not been "officially" announced/confirmed for this site yet. But yes it's pretty clear this is the same proposal.

Re: Nordhaus Phase II

Does this... need to have a separate thread?

I favor consolidation. We had single threads for Mozaic, Elan, Mill & Main, etc. I think we can manage to simultaneously discuss phase II development alongside phase I construction updates
