It comes down to it's easier to attack something in a sentence or with a yard sign, trying to defend a plan with facts and data requires your opponent to listen in good faith.
Which is why it's a bad strategy when dealing with an emotional issue like this.

Re: Rush Line Corridor BRT

I think successfully implementing such a program would be harder than it initially appears. Besides the cost of setting up and running it, someone would need to check for compliance (I'm assuming cars would have a sticker, hang tag, etc). For the day passes, there would need to be a way to purchase ...

Re: Minnesota Governor Election 2018

I don't see why candidates even bother with those pledges anymore. How often has an endorsement (from either party) really mattered, especially for gubernatorial campaigns? Perpich didn't need it for one of his terms, Carlson never got it, Pawlenty almost didn't get it for his first term, Dayton did...

Re: Harlem Irving and CA Ventures - 240 Hennepin Ave - 18-20 stories

Stuff (not just buildings) generally goes through a period of being considered ugly/dated/tacky first before it becomes historical/vintage/cool. It's why people love the charm and style of houses from the early 20th century, but not ones from 30-40 years ago. Or why people are buying brand new furni...

Re: Hopkins - General Topics

Is food wholesaling a unique type of wholesaling that makes it a worse thing to warehouse in the massive speculative warehouses being built on farmland at the fringe of the metro, such as the ones that have been built in Rogers waiting for someone to fill? Most of those probably don't have the refr...

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

They shouldn't so much fear fourplexes as they should financial deregulation and trade wars... Buying at the top of the market while the people in charge are making decisions like its 1926 was always going to end poorly. I agree. I doubt fourplexes will have much negative impact, if any. But people...

Re: Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan

Ever since I got screwed on a real estate transaction during the downturn in 08, I've been very careful not to pin my financial future on my home and I think increasingly younger people will think of their homes not as a wealth vehicle but a place to live with a relatively fixed cost that may or ma...

Re: Mall of America - Bloomington

It makes sense. The hotels and offices alone should provide a decent customer base, not to mention people who work at the mall, and of course mall visitors themselves.

Re: MSP Airport

I've noticed many more flights taking off to the south recently, across the river. Anyone know what's going on with that? It's become quite the topic of discussion on my local Nextdoor, where people are complaining about the noise. I think the complaints are silly; it's really not that bad, but I am...

Re: New Orleans

My review of the French Quarter: This feels like it reasonably could be a first neighborhood of a US major city to function well and eliminate all cars. It helps that it was built long before cars. :) But yeah, I love the French Quarter; I went to New Orleans for the first time in April and really ...

The millennial generation is larger than the boomer generation. Things will still shift because people are living longer, but we're not jumping off a cliff.
Correct, but Generation Z is smaller, which contributes to the issue.

Re: Minnesota Governor Election 2018

Yes, that too!! Maye Quade won a swing seat by a pretty thin margin in '16. Better hope the people of Apple Valley are still fired up to vote DFL in a non-Presidential year (when turnout is down), AND that the DFL candidate is, y'know, good. It just doesn't add up. Picking someone from the metro, w...

Re: Latest Census Estimates and Met Council Projections

It's probably also not a good idea to assume that Millennials won't change their political views over time, either, considering that's exactly what the Boomers did (Gen X too, though not as much so far).

Re: Subsidized and/or Affordable Housing

Came here to post that myself. It's a good example of why just building luxury apartments and letting other apartments become affordable due to age/quality doesn't work, because those apartments will just end up getting upgraded or replaced.

Re: Twin Cities' National and Global Image

While it's never great to see a company leave, they didn't have much of a presence here to begin with, and their HQ was only here because they were once part of Cargill. The Twin Cities won't miss 150 jobs, especially not these days. I doubt even Plymouth will feel much impact.

Re: Suburban Malls and Associated Retail News

Burnsville has been hit really hard the past couple of years on store closings, especially the national clothing store chains. They were doing better than most malls around here for a while, but they had the wrong assortment of stores at the wrong time. It doesn't help that they've traditionally bee...

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

It's funny that someone would call the proposed development "eyesores" when the intersection currently has two shuttered buildings, a vacant lot (that looks like it was probably another closed business), and a rather sad-looking laundry. Yet that, somehow, is better than what's proposed?

Yeah, the pricing they originally proposed would not have worked here, so it's good that they changed that. The food options are intriguing.
