Re: Hennepin Avenue Reconstruction (Washington to 12th)

Why would she? All she wanted was the protected bike lanes and for everything else to stay the same. And that's what she got. It's pretty misleading that they only pictured two buses at each stop area, when already it's common to see a 4, 6, 12, and 61 all lined up together. On top of those, there w...

Re: Hennepin Avenue Reconstruction (Washington to 12th)

A giant ravine will open in the earth and demons with pointy pitchforks will come streaming out if they build this as shown.

Which is to say, the proposed layout is almost exactly the same as the street is today.

Re: Eden Prairie - General Topics

Well they implemented a zoning district based on it. It's a pretty good code, eliminating minimum lot areas and front yard setbacks, adding max setbacks and min stories. Search for "Table 3: Building Bulk & Dimension Standards for Town Center District" in this pdf: http://www.edenprair...

Re: Minnesota Valley regional rail (Shakopee, Mankato, beyond)

Currently there are 4-6 trips in each direction every day between Minneapolis & Mankato. I'm assuming the shakopee route would be in addition to this. While the current frequency is pretty good, most of the existing runs use short buses so a train route would be a pretty huge capacity jump. I re...

Re: Westminster Church

I'm sure the Pope of Westminster is watching this board trying to decide whether to move forward with this, but the community-minded thing for a downtown church to do would be to build up. I'd think there would be plenty of room to add on top of their disneyland monastery at 12th & Marquette. Al...

Re: Nicollet Mall Reconstruction Project

You couldn't do multiple lanes on Nicollet without drastically narrowing the sidewalks and pedestrian amenities. Nonstarter. Yes you could. Nicollet is 80' wide. The current curving design reduces sidewalk widths to 15' in many places. A bus passing lane doesn't need to be more than 10' wide. Try m...

Re: Nicollet Mall Reconstruction Project

But the nice thing is that buses can GO AROUND other buses since there are two lanes in each direction. Which is something that could have been designed into the Nicollet Mall rebuild, if the transit function the street were at all considered in the design. The transit function, i.e. the most impor...

Re: 77th/76th Street Corridor - Richfield / Edina

I believe the ruling was limited to determining that Section 8 program participants are not a protected class, so it's not discriminatory for landlords to choose not to rent to them based on their participation in the program. This ruling would prevent ordinance like Chicago's that use income discri...

That is the original plat, right? I remember reading that the guy who platted it later regretting making the grids parallel to the river rather than oriented to the cardinal directions.

Re: 77th/76th Street Corridor - Richfield / Edina

One option for the city -- some would say a nuclear option -- would be to introduce an ordinance to condition issuance of rental licenses on acceptance of Section 8 vouchers. This should be done anyway, say I, and if the new owner knew that he would be required to take vouchers next time he renewed ...

Re: Bottineau LRT (Blue Line Extension)

Well phrased, alleycat. The council will not grow a spine, however, unless they have cover from advocates. This is the most disappointing aspect of the whole thing to me: the advocacy community doesn't seem to be engaged on this, even though it is probably the worst urban planning decision of the la...

Yeah what's up with how immigrants are responsible for all the bad architecture ever in America?

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

Yep most of the delay is on the part of the route west of the Twin Cities. The MSP-CHI segment of the Empire builder is probably more reliable than driving the interstate and certainly more comfortable. More frequent low speed trains would cut into driving modeshare, since those times are fairly com...

Re: Amtrak Empire Builder and Intercity Rail to Chicago

Greyhound's express buses have good legroom -- not quite Superliner but comfortable for anyone under 7' I should think. Most of the buses between Mpls & Chicago are express. Look for the little 'e' symbol when you're booking. I've found Greyhound to have much more reliable wifi than Amtrak, too....
