Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Let's say Metro Transit refuses and provides regular LRT service.

What is DHS gonna do about it? Shut down the Super Bowl?

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Exactly. People are far too quick to just let our PUBLIC transit system be taken from the public. The replacement service, even free, is not equivalent. It's much slower and less comfortable. The super bowl attendees should use it. They can even have it for free! If DHS is *so* worried about a terro...

And now they're forcing the homeless out as well.

It's absolutely disgusting to see what is going on.

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Your solution is not possible, the Dept of Homeland Security requires the security zone around the Super Bowl due to it being classified as a first tier security risk event. The light rail runs directly through the security zone, and those that don't have tickets can not go into the zone. Metro Tra...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

I've already set off my Facebook rant, but this is bullshit. Make the gladiator games attendees ride the bus, not the people that use and support transit every damn day of the year. Why should the wealthy be given exclusive access to our highest-amenity transit service?

Re: Southwest - General Topics (Linden Hills, Fulton, et al)

Yes, RBY expresses what I was thinking. It *feels* like a big change even if maybe it isn't, and especially isn't given the surrounding context. We're going to see lots more efforts to spot-zone like this and probably in places where it is a harder sell. At some point it won't be allowed anymore due...

Re: Southwest - General Topics (Linden Hills, Fulton, et al)

Not that I think this shouldn't happen, but spot zoning from R1A to R4 seems...not good. How much longer can we sustain this sort of thing? I'm not at all saying we should halt this but a complete overhaul of zoning codes and application is in order. Looking at Google street view, this is pretty muc...

2024? Geez, that's a long way out. What's going to change in the interim? This project feels very flimsy in terms of its long-term viability as currently designed.

Time to re-bid this. If the market isn't there, it isn't there. We need something special here.

Re: Riverview Corridor (Alternatives Analysis)

Midtown rail should absoluely get a color. It connects two METRO rail lines and it makes a lot of sense to extend it along SWLRT for some distance and possibly also along the Blue Line.

Lake St. aBRT would be, well, aBRT. :)

Re: Riverview Corridor (Alternatives Analysis)

I'd say we should circumvent the issue by building Nicollet/Central as aBRT. If it is a streetcar, though, I agree that colors are the way to go for rail lines, even if the streetcar operates more like aBRT than LRT or hBRT. Except we've already explicitly decoupled colors from mode. We've already ...

I did contact them, and if they go with a streetcar vehicle it will be apart of the METRO system and assigned a color.
I think that's right for this line but would not be appropriate for the as-conceived Nicollet streetcar. That should probably get a letter designation.

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

Oh yes, it's ready for limited road testing. I don't believe it will be ready for mass consumption for some time. I have no idea what that timeline is but I'm pretty sure it's at least 5 years out, maybe 10. And you're right, it's probably some of both. But I suspect it's heavily biased to deep lear...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

Do we wait until autonomous vehicles can not only drive perfectly among other autonomous vehicles, but can also perfectly avoid sleepy, drunk, sloppy, or even terroristic drivers? Yes, we do! These things have algorithms configured via deep learning driven by millions of simulation cycles. They are...

But how? Ok, with only there choices I definitely understand people ranking Frey ahead of their real third choice, but if we had a proper implementation, how would that help over ranking him fourth, as I would have had I had the chance?

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

Given the range of today's vehicles, by the time autoomous vehicles are widely available there will be no range issues at all and charging will likely be time-competitive to filling the gas tank.

ICE-based vehicles are rapidly losing their edge.
