Re: Twin Cities to Eau Claire regional rail

Regional rail like this (moar pleez!) makes LRT for Riverview more appealing, no? No. We studied commuter rail on this corridor and it was found to not be cost-effective. There is no way this works out. If it goes ahead, the states will be bailing it out. That in turn makes *any* LRT that much more...

Re: Presidential Election 2016

Let's focus on 2018 first. We *have to* win the Governor's race in Minnesota to avoid gerrymandering. The MN Senate is probably flippable but the MN House is not.

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Almost everyone one of those fare modifications disproportionately impacts low-income people. I understand the value of GoTo cards for Metro Transit but as Tcmetro says, they need to be much more accessible before we start eliminating paper transfers.

I don't like the way this is going.

Re: MN State Senate and House Elections 2016

I think you're missing the point, VA Station Dude. It's not that Emmer is on the right side of the issues; it's that hijacking a town hall and making a scene doesn't accomplish anything, and arguably makes things worse. It worked very well for the Tea Party. I for one am heartened that liberals are...

Time to start making contacts. Call your legislators and get allies aware and on board for a fight.

Re: Counties Transit Improvement Board (CTIB)

I guess I have a problem with a two-tier tax when we're spending millions on park & rides and things like Marq2 that primarily benefit suburban users while most bus stops in the city don't even have a bench.

Re: RE: Re: Counties Transit Improvement Board (CTIB)

To say that the county sales tax option will cause the GOP to say "fine, do it yourself" ignores that the ask from the DFL to increase to a half or 3/4 cent tax was at least in part response to that existing reality. Not really. Even back in 2008 we knew that 1/4 cent was wholly inadequate. Even 1/...

Re: Counties Transit Improvement Board (CTIB)

If you want to cast blame, cast it towards those who decided aBRT isn't a transitway. That would be CTIB... Maybe. The rulemaking isn't entirely clear to me. The law requires that CTIB-funded transitways be part of Met Council's plans. I assume it is Met Council that decides what qualifies as a "tr...

Re: Southwest LRT (Green Line Extension)

Is this even constitutional? The executive branch implements law, not the legislature. The legislature can't tell the feds how the state wants the money to be used unless they actually pass a law and get it signed. But as we know these days, our constitutions are just ink on pages. I suppose they ca...

Re: RE: Re: Counties Transit Improvement Board (CTIB)

It has been brought up before, but yes (I'd hope). CTIB has a (stupid) limitation that its money can only go toward "transitways," which doesn't include aBRT. Free from that, I sure hope that a larger transit pot, and at a county level, would make doing the sub-$50m projects a practical option. It ...

I'm a paying digital subscriber. FWIW: Me too and I basically agree with your analysis, except I think it's perfectly fine that national/world news is mostly copy from other agencies. The Strib made a decision several years ago to put more into local coverage and they have produced many excellent s...

Re: Star Tribune

I'd tend to agree that there should be a more significant discount for digital only vs. paper + digital.
I'm not so sure. The cost of personnel (i.e. reporters, editors, staff) likely dwarfs the cost of printing.

Re: 2017-18 MN Legislative Session & Budget (Djayton Unchained)

I asked Frank about this back in 2014 or 2015 and he made a weird comment about "libertarian-minded opposition" or something to that effect. DFL totally could have gotten this done when they had total control in 2013-14. DFL totally could have gotten a lot of things done back then. But they "didn't...

Re: Presidential Election 2016

As to the election, let's not discount the role of Russia and the FBI. It's now abundantly clear that Russia influenced the election and that there are factions inside the FBI that are politicized and sympathetic to American Nazis. Those forces may very well have caused Comey to do what he did. The ...

Most people are not saying that. We're saying he's demonstrated that he doesn't understand the gravity of the situation and that in and of itself is a big problem.

That's not the same thing as saying he supports sexual assault and/or saying he doesn't think players should be punished.

Re: Sports

Claeys' repeated insubordination was reason enough to fire him. Add on the incompetence of not being able to understand the code of conduct and Title XI, and the inability to convey both to his players and it becomes a slam dunk.

Re: Uptown General Topics & Development Map

We're not? "All over the city" includes Uptown, I think.

And yes, when were talking public policy, politics matters and like it or not, multiple voices have sway. We're going to have both because that's what the majority of residents want.

Re: Uptown General Topics & Development Map

That's a perfect example of the all-or-nothing thinking I'm talking about. Look at what you wrote. It's all very extreme, full of straw men. One can support development and still not want 13-story buildings or even six-story buildings. We need a mix because it's quite obvious people prefer different...
