It looks much better in person and doesn't come across well in pictures.

Yup. Thanks, I confused the two items based on the conversation above.

Re: Subsidized and/or Affordable Housing

WHS, your claim that the units are costing more than market rate is not true. For instance, Sherman and Associates upcoming development on the northern side of the West Broadway curve is split between market rate and 60% AMI. The market rate units are going to cost more than affordable units. The ma...

Re: Subsidized and/or Affordable Housing

In Jordan we have generally been very supportive of affordable housing. A few reasons I championed affordable MFH. First, they bring much needed development to an area that needs a boost and otherwise would get little to no infill. Second, most of these projects are capped at 40% or 60% AMI. Residen...

Re: Bike Shopping

I was looking at a lot of upright riding bikes last year and I've settled on the Raleigh Haskell. Seems like the best low-maintenance, upright option with an internal hub. Looking to buy one this summer.

Re: West Broadway Corridor (Alternatives Analysis)

Robbinsdale, very early on, refused the streetcar on the grounds that it would require tearing up streets that had recently been rebuilt. Over time I think they'll soften that stance. The CAC, or whatever it was called this time, was heavily attended by Northside constituents, and we wholeheartedly ...

Re: Beltline Station Area – St. Louis Park

Thanks, Peter. I'm perfectly fine with density. It comes in many forms. The thing is, what actually makes for good urban places is a diversity of uses, size of structure, architecture, etc. Sure SLP should let the market decide what's best suited for the site within reason. If you look at the Arden ...

Re: Beltline Station Area – St. Louis Park

Well, there are thousands of jobs across the "death road." Of course it's not more than four stories, so it might not fit your fetish. To the south, just across the trail are hundreds of rental units. Not fine grained urbanism, but what superblock projects are nowadays?

Those are two different blocks. The one with the affordable housing behind the Little Jak's redevelopment is a half mile to the west.

I believe it was just the classic White Castle building. The IOOF building was deemed historic.

Re: Northside - General Topics

That separate retail building was a compromise for the developer to meet the city's desire for a restaurant/retail space next to the theater expansion. The Capri expansion will be just to east of a pocket park. There will be plenty of retail bays between existing buildings, Broadway Flats and Lupe-R...

Hah. Thought we were still talking about the Irving house. The tornado did hit right about there. It's amazing how much a good tree canopy improves the aesthetic of a given block.

Re: Renting vs. Owning | Apartments vs. Condos

I'm friends with the previous owner. He moved to Victory after 11 years at that house. His best guess is that lady from Bloomington who bought it wasn't a good fit for the neighborhood. Not everyone is cut out for living in north. The price seems fair, but he couldn't see any changes that were made ...

Re: Renting vs. Owning | Apartments vs. Condos

East-west we have Glenwood, Plymouth (partially a protected bike lane, more to come), 26th Avenue (under construction with protected off-street trail), Lowry, Dowling, 42nd, Victory/Webber Parkways, Shingle Creek/45th Ave N and 49th (off-street). There are less options going north south, but there a...

Re: Northside - General Topics

It does seem like the "more policing" contingent (see North Vent, True North on Facebook) has become more entrenched since Jamar Clark. The ensuing spike in crime has made this even worse, but there has been an undercurrent of fear and anger for years (see Johnny Northside). I would also like to see...

Re: Northside - General Topics

In the six years I've lived smack dab between Lowry and Broadway, just over on Queen, I haven't let fear run our lives. Yes, I have a security system, but I know that vast majority of violence in my neighborhood is targeted. Yes, homicides have occurred nearby, but ceding the sidewalks and parks or ...

Re: Northside - General Topics

Sometimes I wonder where these people live. I bike through north on a daily basis (with my toddler and wife often). Go for walks. Take the bus occasionally. Rarely feel unsafe.
