Re: Fare-Free Transit

A good question for everyone here is should something like that state fair shuttle busses be free instead of costing 5 bucks a person. I personally would say no cause it can already be a pain with overcrowding, I can only imagine how bad it would be if it was free. I don't think fare-free transit i...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Office Market

Hennepin County requires anyone at certain levels of management who oversee direct service/in-person employees to live in Minnesota (or Wisconsin). The county has lots of office space / service centers outside the main downtown location. It’s my understanding that the relatively new building on Lake...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Office Market

Is there really a significant chunk of city or county workers who can work from home who weren't based downtown? Of admin-type workers at the county, for instance, nearly all of them worked downtown. Librarians, public works staff, social workers, service center, and other folks obviously don't all ...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Office Market

You're not wrong about the pay disparity between the private and public sectors (and the County seems to pay even less than the City for similar-type jobs, especially towards the lower end of the pay scale), but public employees also have guaranteed pensions and $0 (or very low) monthly healthcare ...

Re: Green Line Extension - Southwest LRT

The footage really drives home how much of SWLRT is running through undevelopable wetlands, along highways, and industrial areas. And it's pretty stunning how little they have done north/east of Hopkins.

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

Maybe it's the start of summer and the craziness that comes with that, but I've noticed cars just fully blowing through some stop signs (Grand & 31st near me comes to mind) recently. Since the pandemic, it really does feel like anything goes on roads, but stop lights feel a little bit safer.

Re: Vision Loss Resources Redevelopment - Lyndale & Franklin

This is a building that already turns away from the Lyndale/Franklin corner. Based on the rendering, it seems like it'll stay that way. Disappointing. Hopefully they can at least get some interesting tenants.

Re: Minneapolis Street Design

Would it be that easy to just swap parking? I assume with the chicanes it might not be -- though I have only biked on that stretch of Bryant once since it was finished and haven't driven it. I really don't think Bryant is the only street with this issue. I really like a lot of aspects of the redo of...

Re: Minneapolis Street Design

It does seem like Bryant having driver-side parking was an own-goal on the city's part - a lot of folks aren't very good at parallel parking on the left side of the street. I got quite good at it when I lived on Grand in Whittier, but even then it could be a pain when it was winter because inevitabl...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis - News & General Topics

Wasn't really sure where to post this observation, but this seemed like the best fit. I'm a mostly remote worker these days, but we had an in-office event yesterday so I drove in just before noon and parked in Ramp A. I was shocked by how empty it was. I didn't go up to a particularly high level and...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News

A lot of talk about building owners needing to attract new business downtown but...do businesses even want to be downtown? My job is mostly remote, but I was in the office last week and walking around during a break, there's no other way to describe it other than a ghost town. It's kind of a Catch-2...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News

Not sure this is the right move - it's going to make floor workers' jobs a nightmare and makes shopping there a second-rate experience. But I can't say I'm totally surprised they're doing it. Many, many years ago, I worked here (mainly cashier, sometimes salesfloor). I remember hearing that revenue ...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Office Market

Anecdotally, I'm one of the only people I know who isn't going back to the office at least some of the time. I'm technically a hybrid worker, but that classification just means they can ask me to come in as little as once a month (in practice, it's been zero times a month). I'd actually like to come...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

So I've recently been driving along 40th Street W to get around Grand Ave construction, which is when I noticed the Grand intersection had what seemed like little "ramps" (not sure the right term here) that take bikers from the street to sidewalk level, then back down again. Both the north...

Re: Minneapolis City Politics General Discussion

No small part of Frey's win was "the moderates strike back," but it helped that he was facing off against two candidates with little to no name recognition from the get-go. That would not be the case if he were to face off against Ilhan, who has the national profile to haul in a lot of mon...

Re: Uptown-LynLake-Wedge - News & General Topics

Chain stores in Uptown often get the blame for its "death," but it actually is kind of weird that other cities seem capable of having commercial districts that mix chain with independent stores but we can't seem to do that. I'm quite certain most folks in Minneapolis - and even in Uptown -...

Re: South Nicollet-Lyndale-Kingfield-Tangletown-Windom

It's nice to see some life coming to Eat Street south of 28th, which feels like a real dead zone. It's especially rough at the Greenway entrance, where there's the encampment and garbage everywhere. It is funny that the articles says the look of the building is meant to "avoid gentrification.&q...

Re: B Line Lake St Rapid Bus, Midtown Rail Transit

Without reconstruction of curbs, there are only four lanes worth of space on Lake Street. I guess if you added the bus lane in the other direction, you'd have to remove the left turn lane they're proposing. I suspect that would slow things down quite a bit.
