Re: Holidazzle Market

I'm just happy I won't have to try and lug a stroller in and out of a terraced pit.

http://www.startribune.com/st-paul-considers-installing-parking-meters-in-neighborhood-commercial-areas/325519021/ Coleman wants parking meters in commercial nodes. Cue neighborhood freakout with all the expected cries of "nobody will shop here anymore!", "people will just go to Rosedale instead", "...

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

I'm reminded of a joke. A biologist, a chemist, and a physicist are going for a walk in the country and pass a cow. Looking for something to talk about, the biologists begins describing the evolutionary adaptations and mating behaviors of the modern cow. The chemist responds by explaining how the en...

It's also worth noting that there are several flat-out inaccuracies there. McGuire, for instance, WAS with Coleman when the author claims he was talking with Hennepin County.

Re: Major League Soccer Stadium in Minnesota

Eric did a great job. (I ran the transportation/parking discussion groups) As for gaining steam...I don't know. We had that meeting last night because the district council desperately wants to get some sort of neighborhood feedback before it's too late. The mayor's office hasn't told us a single thi...

Re: Transit and Land Use Advocacy

Anyone else organizing a National Night Out event? They are good opportunities to talk to people about land use and transportation issues. I had some good conversations about permit parking and recerting 26th/28th to two-way operation last year. What specific issues would you all like to talk to yo...

70 stories? That'll sure show those bumpkins in Chicago!

As soon as we build it and then sneak in and burn down Willis Tower, the John Hancock Center, Trump International, Aon Center, Aqua, Water Tower Place, and The Legacy at Millenium Park...

Re: Minneapolis City Politics General Discussion

Snark aside, Cam's argument is just really weak. Governments large and small regulate all sorts of things large and small. Nobody is going to decide not to build an apartment building just because they have to hand out a notecard they're not even paying for, and as EOst says, there is a very real an...

Re: Minneapolis City Politics General Discussion

Yep, it's easy. Got it. Apparently it strikes nobody else as ridiculous that we're going to force landlords to become part of our election process, so carry on. Let's start brainstorming some other simple things that we can force other people to do, because we're just trying to do good! I agree, la...

Re: Minneapolis City Politics General Discussion

Won't somebody please think of the poor landlords! They're going to have to print out whole sheets of paper once in a while. This is so onerous that I'd be surprised if any apartments are built in Minneapolis ever again. Whole sheets! Sometimes a dozen! Do you have any idea how many nickels that wil...

Re: The Vintage (Selby and Snelling)

Embarrassing confession time. I can see the building from my bedroom window as I type this. I've taken a couple dozen photos of the Vintage as it's gone up at various stages, but I've been too lazy to set up an account somewhere to upload them and link here.

Re: Major League Soccer Stadium in Minnesota

Free? As I understand it, the Met Council has every intention of getting fair market value for their parcel. That was my understanding as well. I'm not necessarily opposed to the stadium going in at the bus barn site, but I'm also not super comfortable with the argument that a currently tax exempt ...

Re: Major League Soccer Stadium in Minnesota

My completely uninformed guess would be that it's closer to double than 10% just because of the amount of weight the piers would be carrying, but I don't know that for sure. I'd love to see a freeway cap there (in fact, it's something that some of us have been pestering UPDC and MNDoT about at Snell...

Re: Major League Soccer Stadium in Minnesota

Are you talking about building it over 94 or on the other side of 94? The former is cost prohibitive, and the latter wouldn't work for several reasons. First, it's too far from the northern and western portions of the redevelopment for potential tenants to feel comfortable. Second, the western side ...

Re: Major League Soccer Stadium in Minnesota

I'm not sure I'd call those "superblocks" either. Google Earth tells me blocks around Lynlake are .12 miles on the long side. Almost nothing in the Midway plan would be that long between intersections (the only exception being that long, skinny southern block, which would presumably now be taken up ...

Re: Major League Soccer Stadium in Minnesota

Thinking outside the box is great when you aren't the one spending money (or losing it). I'd love to see a clearcut approach, but it's simply never going to happen. RK Midway needs to make money, and this project is only ever going to happen over time. Big Top and the bank will be redeveloped long b...

As a reference for plans that have been discussed by the involved parties, a rough vision of new street placement can be found on page 35 of the UIG TOD study: http://stpaul.gov/DocumentCenter/View/73774. The Spruce Tree extension across Snelling and the creation of a city road where the thru-way cu...

Re: Major League Soccer Stadium in Minnesota

In St. Paul you have plenty of room on both sides of the freeway that can be utilized for redevelopment. They may eventually have to widen the sidewalks on the Snelling avenue bridge to better accommodate the crowds who are walking and parking south of the freeway. Similar to walking across 394 to ...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

As a St. Paul resident, the biggest obstacle to me shopping in Dinkytown is the lack of a decent connection between the River Road and the greenway/University Ave. that doesn't require either drastic elevation changes or cutting through the Mall area and dodging students around the athletic complex....

Re: Road Crime

I still wonder that. As categories, cyclists and drivers (if we want to assume they're distinct) are both sets of people that break traffic laws and people that don't. I try not to treat all drivers the same just because many of them roll stop signs, turn right without checking crosswalks, etc. I tr...
