Re: Pedestrian Safety and Infrastructure Improvements

Regarding the Washington Ave, the flashing yellow isn't an attempt to imply ROW but because the feds said that green bicycle signals may only be used when there's no conflict with other phases. Since you can't use that when bicyclists may go with conflicts, what do you do? What they came up with was...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Retail News

I find it interesting the asseveration that Chicago's vibrancy comes from in part traffic congestion being so horrific that office workers are stuck after work buying overpriced food an beverages rather than being able to get home to their family in the suburbs. Also, on my article on the changing r...

Re: Bicycle Infrastructure

It's also easier for criminals to hide in underpasses as opposed to overpasses. Besides flooding and the fact that the interchange is eventually going away this was a mentioned as s factor in not building a tunnel for the I-35W path under the Black Dog Road ramps.

4-3 conversion, MUP, and mini-roundabout on old highway 16 in Fairmont https://i.imgur.com/GD4wNWk.png City originally wanted to maintain an unwarranted traffic signal but balked when they learned they'd have to pay the full $200,000 cost themselves. https://clients.bolton-menk.com/lakeaveimprovemen...

Re: Road Geek Topics

Constancy would be the reason. You shouldn't have to know what city you happen to be in to know what the default speed limit is. I would not be opposed to a 25 mph residential speed limit statewide, but allowing it to be different in every city is a bad idea. As for the 85% limit, there's a reason i...

Re: 2841 Hennepin - Old Chicago Boneyard Salsa a la Salsa Game Lotus Piggy Bank

Isn't the fact that this is a "cursed restaurant property" an indication that there's maybe already too much retail in the area and an indication maybe we shouldn't insist on them building a lot of retail?

Re: Eagan, Apple Valley, Burnsville - General Topics

When I'm a pedestrian or bicyclist I consider a grade separated crossing the best possible scenario because then I'm completely separated from cars, and not a "compromise. We can't grade separate every crossing but places on County 42 near Burnsville Center seems to be an excellent place to do so. (...

Re: Eagan, Apple Valley, Burnsville - General Topics

It's almost like you can make something walkable without hurting people in cars if you can build pedestrian overpasses and multi-use trails to keep motorized and non-motorized traffic separate.

That's a reason single family detached homes are so great. If you're a young family with kids you can have a place for them to play. If you're an old grump like me you can put up a fence between yourself and your neighbor's kids. Or the Millennials that have bonfires until midnight and apparently in...

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

Carver County is the main driver of the configuration, they've agreed to accept jurisdiction of the road on the condition MnDOT cough up with a large chunk of money to build it the way they want. I don't recall a specific justification for four lanes, but it's obvious we're not going to expand the B...

I'd imagine they're putting a non-mountable curb on the trail side of the roadway so they're allowing some space for motorists to bypass a disabled vehicle rather than have traffic back up to Mendota Heights every time it happens.

There are plans to densify downtown Stillwater, when, where, how much, and if remain to be seen. The legal kerfuffle with taking out the dry cleaners was to gain control of enough land for a second parking ramp in the future. Stillwater views a 5 minute / quarter mile walk from parking to a business...

Actually a competent planning process did recommend LRT down I-35W, the 1992 DEIS for I-35W from Washington Ave to I-35E. That ship has sailed now that between I-494 and downtown isn't going to need rebuilding for another 50 years.

Re: Work from home and road congestion

As a data point back when I worked in the office I would turn the thermostat down a couple of degrees when I was gone in the winter. I wouldn't turn it up in the summer because it was already fairly high (77-78) and I was worried about how much heat my furry friends could take. Now that I've worked ...

I guess I don't see why pork chops are a problem here. There's only one of them and it's a place where no pedestrians will cross because the MUP is on the opposite side of Manning. As for the signals, partly it's another Eden Prairie / US 169 (Or Brooklyn Center / MN 252) situation. Which illustrate...

Re: St. Louis Park - General Topics

Looking at a few other random locations, the existing St. Louis Park seems to fit Micro Center's business model of locating in a dumpy strip mall with plenty of surface parking reasonably close to wealthy areas. There's plenty of other dumpy strip malls around for them to relocate too, but I don't s...

The reason it's no longer in vogue is because it was used to justify the building of a handful of streetcar projects cumulatively costing hundreds of millions of dollars across the US, and virtually all of them have been massive failures . Bummer that your friends are so stubborn, but the best way ...
