Re: Suburbs - General Topics

Given that many households are going to have 2, or even 3 or more cars for the foreseeable future and many homes have single car garages, what's the best outcome? A) Allowing wide driveways, parking pads B) Allowing massive garages in back C) Just making the people deal with the potential damage and...

Re: White Castle and Holiday at Central & Hennepin

I support zoning, but I also support reasonable variances to be granted. Would I support variances to build 40 story apartment towers on all four sides of my property? No. This isn't my neighborhood so I don't care one way or another, but it doesn't seem like they're asking too much. Rebuild uses th...

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

Traffic fines indexed to income sounds like a good idea to me. Someone making $200,000 a year probably doesn't care how many tickets they get until it starts to affect their driving privilege.

Re: White Castle and Holiday at Central & Hennepin

So we have one yes vote from the neighborhood here. How many no votes from people in the neighborhood? I assume you're talking about the Holiday on Broadway and I-35W, and the SuperAmerica on Broadway. These look large enough to be viable so they're not likely to close, but can they handle the addit...

Re: White Castle and Holiday at Central & Hennepin

This is Paris. Is two gasoline pumps and a very small convenience store and no car wash economically feasible in a US city? The existing Holiday is much larger and Holiday apparently thinks that their store is not or they wouldn't be spending money to rebuild it.

Re: White Castle and Holiday at Central & Hennepin

Holiday was the original "Hyvee" in the area with mammoth grocery stores with clothing, sporting good departments, even pet stores and travel agencies. Eventually their big box grocery operation got merged into Cub Foods and they morphed into convenience stores. It simply won't work to get "good" ur...

Re: U.S. Bank Stadium Construction Updates

How does it affect restroom efficiency if the people like me that won't use troughs use stalls instead?

And we destroyed a structurally sound stadium to build three new ones and we're worried about the environmental impact of batteries in the flushers?

Re: Black Lives Matter, The Police, etc.

What's interesting is I thought I read that a city tried to get police escort of meter readers and in order to get a look at evidence inside homes on the pretext of safety of the readers. Courts shut that down. If we want equipment malfunctions on cars to be enforced, we should have a special branc...

Latest Rumors: Enterprise and SuperCat will leave at the end of the year for a year long refurbishment, and will return in new locations in 2018. Cedar Fair has gone "picking" in Europe looking for good deals on rides and rumors are one of them will go in Enterprise's spot next year. A permit has be...

I like the Finnish system where fines for traffic crimes are indexed to a person's income, A Nokia exec getting a $103,600 speeding ticket.

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

Are we really calling the average commuter in the Twin Cities anti-social? Yes. I mean, that's just silly. But carry on. I got plenty of socializing on the bus today...if you define socializing as standing in the aisle of a full bus, pressed between several sweaty bodies and getting shoved around a...

So how many cops get murked by people they pull over for busted taillights vs the other way around. But regardless, suppose we stop using terms that require people to look them up in the urban dictionary.

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

We're not living in an era where you hop on a stagecoach and then stay in a shared dorm in a tavern anymore. If you look at the past 50 years, culture has demanded and expected a lot more privacy: * Shared bedrooms for kids? Mostly gone. * Showering stark naked in front of all you classmates after g...

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

Did they tear out landscaping for kids to play or because they didn't want to maintain it? I have a couple of flower beds out front, but nothing more. Easier just to mow grass once a week in part of the house I never see unless I'm on my way to my car. I don't care particularly if it dies back in th...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

I'll have to disagree that it's "all we need". Being able to sleep while the car drives opens up a lot more travel possibilities, it would be easier to make a weekend trip to Chicago if you let your car do the driving on Friday and Sunday nights, to say nothing of the elderly and handicapped that ca...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

So what's the best way going forward? 1) Continue to invest a lot of money into trying to improve batteries so an electric car can be an "only car" for everyone, including those that make 500 mile road trips? 2) Forget about that, and improve marketing since we could make an enormous impact if multi...

Assuming they actually need the space and can't get rid of government waste, for comparison purposes how much would it cost to buy a building somewhere else in the downtown area.

What would be a better outcome that still results in the church getting the event space they need? The church leaving the office building alone and moving somewhere else to a place that has it or it can be built, and selling the existing building to a smaller church or someone that wants to re purpo...
