Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

We're not living in an era where you hop on a stagecoach and then stay in a shared dorm in a tavern anymore. If you look at the past 50 years, culture has demanded and expected a lot more privacy: * Shared bedrooms for kids? Mostly gone. * Showering stark naked in front of all you classmates after g...

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

Did they tear out landscaping for kids to play or because they didn't want to maintain it? I have a couple of flower beds out front, but nothing more. Easier just to mow grass once a week in part of the house I never see unless I'm on my way to my car. I don't care particularly if it dies back in th...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

I'll have to disagree that it's "all we need". Being able to sleep while the car drives opens up a lot more travel possibilities, it would be easier to make a weekend trip to Chicago if you let your car do the driving on Friday and Sunday nights, to say nothing of the elderly and handicapped that ca...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

So what's the best way going forward? 1) Continue to invest a lot of money into trying to improve batteries so an electric car can be an "only car" for everyone, including those that make 500 mile road trips? 2) Forget about that, and improve marketing since we could make an enormous impact if multi...

Good news for people that drive to Chicago. The expansion of I-39/90 in Janesville got bumped up to years, going from 4 lanes to 8

Assuming they actually need the space and can't get rid of government waste, for comparison purposes how much would it cost to buy a building somewhere else in the downtown area.

Re: Westminster Church

What would be a better outcome that still results in the church getting the event space they need? The church leaving the office building alone and moving somewhere else to a place that has it or it can be built, and selling the existing building to a smaller church or someone that wants to re purpo...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

Another idea is if when you've been picked up in a self-driving gasoline rental car to head to Chicago for the weekend, if you'd be able to rent the electric car you own to the same agency rather than have it sit in the garage for the weekend.

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

I already know plenty of people who rent cars for long trips rather than use their own car. I also know plenty of people at work who rent cars to drive to other midwestern cities, and who rent a car rather than get mileage to drive their own car. I also know of and have used plenty of car rental pl...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

Yes I'm sure that in a world where specialized vehicles are frequently rented by consumers, all vehicle rental agencies will still be at the airport. I don't think so, but they'll be no need to locate them in the neighborhood either, because no neighborhood location would be as convenient as one sh...

Re: Widening of Snelling Ave?

Also, based on our observations from when my sister attended Northwestern, it's mainly middle class to rich kids that have probably never used a bus. It wasn't often that they'd leave campus at all, but when they did they'd all pile into one of the few cars on campus and go to Target or the movies o...

Re: Widening of Snelling Ave?

They already have a layout, so it's possible. Why is it necessary? Because there's a severe congestion problem (LOS F) at the signals and this project will fix it. Unless the locals want to cough up a *lot* of money for interchanges, a more permanent fix isn't going to happen with this not even bein...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

Or else just rely on self-driving gasoline cars for long trips if battery technology doesn't get any better. The existing gasoline supply should last a long time if all the intra-city driving was converted to electric. I'm personally a skeptic on whether the rental model in general will come to pass...

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars

I keep hearing different opinions on whether battery technology will get good enough for an electric car to be an only car for the average person. Of course if the rental model of driverless cars comes to pass, and I'm not at all sure it will, that point would be moot because you could order up a ga...

Luna Di Luna is a new restaurant that's been a hit with area residents. It's a traditional Italian sit-down place in the former Taco Bell / Pawn Shop / Smoke Shop on Lyndale.

Re: Downtown Parking Facilities

The only time I had the misfortune of needing to park in downtown Minneapolis for the whole day was when I was on jury duty. (this was pre-light rail). They specifically suggested we not park in the Government Center ramp due to the expense and suggested we look for a surface lot.

Re: Suburbs - General Topics

Not trolling. When urbanists throw out buzzwords like "sprawl" or "walkability" or "sustainability", that leads other people to believe they have a fundamental hatred of cars and houses and want to force everyone to live in an apartment within walking distance of a grocery store like you would in Eu...

Re: White Castle and Holiday at Central & Hennepin

I know people that need gasoline can just drive farther to get it (or stop on their way home from longer trips), but not being familiar with the neighborhood, does the fact that gas stations are the de-facto corner grocery stores serve a purpose? Or that with a bigger station they could have more gr...
