Re: Vikings Stadium

It's been widely reported that Downtown East was not zoned to encourage development in order to build up the CBD. Maybe the zoning has changed now, but apparently in the past it wasn't. I remember Rybak saying this last spring, but it sounds like BS. Can anyone provide a contemporaneous source that...

Re: Uptown Projects Map

The current headline was not the one that attracted 249 comments blasting Rybak's misplaced priorities. Nor was the short linked article the only one on the subject (although it's the only one I can find now). And I’m not disputing the reporting, I actually think Roper is a pretty good journalist. W...

True. Nor should they repeat untrue talking points in 50pt type headlines.

Re: Uptown Projects Map

I mostly agree with you MNdible. By and large the Star Tribune's Minneapolis coverage is decent (not to be confused with uncritical). In my comment above I defended the Uptown article in question. Though, I stand by my assertion that they sometimes consciously throw city-haters red meat. Remember Er...

Re: Uptown Projects Map

Thanks for your reply Nasa. My point is that even though the "Redstar" is often accused of being a liberal rag, it's actually biased towards conflict & sensationalism (to channel Jon Stewart). Some stories feed into the local-tv-news-fomented fears about cities and people in them. The Star Tribune h...

Re: Uptown Projects Map

I'm not sure if it's a personal bias or if the Strib actually does this, but much of the time when there is a story about growth or prosperity somewhere in the metro (but especially somewhere in the cities of Mpls or StP) there is a heavy negative connotation. It's like the Strib is catering to an ...

Re: Star Tribune Blocks

1) I don’t give a lot of credit to your leads. You talk to a “friend” who tells you what you want to hear, “Big slender towers on the Star Tribune blocks”. Then, when publically released information contradicts this assessment he tells you something else you want to hear, “Now because of the Governo...

Re: Star Tribune Blocks

I already posted this on another thread, but maybe you missed it. From the NY Times: At least three recent academic studies have demonstrated that the number of people who move for tax reasons is negligible, even among the wealthy. “It’s very clear that, over all, modest changes in top tax rates do ...

Re: Urban/Suburban Lifestyle

I completely agree with both of your points. Most of the Northside has yet to be colonized by the brunch crowd... aaahhhh... poor choice of words...I'll stick with "gentrify." And maybe I should cancel that "Colonize North Minneapolis" bumper sticker order.

Re: Minneapolis - St. Paul Business News

It's only factual that business is leaving California. One company moving there does not change reality. From the NY Times: At least three recent academic studies have demonstrated that the number of people who move for tax reasons is negligible, even among the wealthy. “It’s very clear that, over ...

Re: Urban/Suburban Lifestyle

Funny. At least the 2011 piece was in the NY Region section. The one I linked to will be in tomorrow's Sunday Styles with the wedding announcements. Yet, I thought it was a pretty well researched piece. It's no Frontline investigation, but I'm not really sure how they could of included more data or ...

Re: Urban/Suburban Lifestyle

The NY Times has a surprisingly interesting article called 'Creating Hipsturbia.' It's a twist on the decades old meme of grown-up kids leaving the city for greener suburban pastures. The Manhattanization of Brooklyn has priced out trustfundless hipsters. "While this colonization is still in its ea...

Re: StoneBridge (2nd Street South & 11th Avenue South)

The spoils seem to go to those who take risks and cut against the herd. Think of the Mill District City Apartments building luxury apartments during the depth of the housing crisis, or Ackerberg building speculative Class A office space in Uptown. I bet Stonebridge will fill up quickly at decent pri...

Re: Saints Lowertown Ballpark

Finance and Commerce reports that the Saints ballpark contract with Ryan is behind schedule. Taxpayer's League is anxious for the final contract to see how much, if any, money was saved by competitive bidding. They don't release other bids until the Ryan contract is finalized. It's rare I'm on the ...

Re: Star Tribune Blocks

Because those buildings have parking ramps? Office use doesn't generate cars coming in and out of buildings, the parking component does. Presumably a 2,500 stall, 10 floor parking garage is going to generate a lot more auto traffic than an office building with 2 floors of underground parking.

Cars flying across the sidewalk midblock for one. And those obnoxious signs flashing and blaring "Caution, car approaching".

Re: Vikings Stadium

That's how I read it, Lordmoke. It's interesting how the article didn't mention Ryan or Wells Fargo, just development west of the stadium. This kind of supports the superblock corporate campus suspicion, doesn't it?

And yes, your strong language is warranted...

Yeah, either one is correct. I looked it up a while ago when I saw it frequently being used both ways. I'm still with the spirit of Twincitizens comment though. "Busses" just looks wrong.

Re: Nicollet-Central Corridor

I've already joined a lot of other commenters by echoing Jarrett Walker's arguments on this thread. In short, enhanced bus could provide the same (or greater) mobility benefits as a streetcar for a lot less cost. That said, I think a streetcar could offer some benefits to the East Hennepin / Frankli...
