Re: Northeast and Southeast Minneapolis - General Topics

I don't quite understand why they've arranged the lobby and parking entry on the west side of the building and the retail spaces on the east side. Given the existence of commercial west of the building, doesn't it make more sense to string the commercial uses together instead of separating them by a...

Re: Target Field Station (the Hotel) & Target Field Station (the Station)

I never said it wasn't profitable. But selling out to a developer can also be profitable. It's a prime location. A smart developer could include a convenience store in a future development. There are also small-footprint urban gas station formats, which you see especially in Europe and East Asia. I'...

A couple shots that show how this building is framing N 6th Ave and N 5th St. (Later shot also shows a side of the new Metro Transit police building, which was designed by Snow Kreilich.) https://i.imgur.com/zcas0iK.jpg https://i.imgur.com/uK24qBF.jpg That Holiday can't be long for this world, can it?

Re: Renaissance Square / The Andrus

Huh, is this not a loading space? Underground parking? No option to unload there and move up by elevator?

Certainly a bit weird that only this building has these constraints when plenty of other retail spaces seem to manage in similar conditions.

This project has mostly flown under the radar, but both buildings are now well under way. When completed, they will comprise 177 units, 129 car parking spaces, and 122 bike parking spaces. All a comfortable walk from the VA Medical Center Station. https://i.imgur.com/dIHUCqn.jpg https://i.imgur.com/...

Re: Nordic House - 729 Washington Av N

They've done a fantastic job covering up the giant parking structure. The fact that the Sable/Parking box is offset from the Nordic box helps make them feel like different buildings and helpfully breaks up the structure's huge bulk.

Here's the view from University. You've got to wonder how long the Teamsters will stick around in their building. I'm sure they could move elsewhere with little trouble, but they could also follow the Sons of Norway example and make a home for themselves in a new development. Either way, the precede...

Re: Public Transit News / Current Events (MN only)

Close, but not quite. This is the data you're looking for: https://gisdata.mn.gov/dataset/us-mn-state-metc-trans-stop-boardings-alightings But as TCMetro says, Metro Transit doesn't publicly release the month-by-month data. I'm not sure how useful that would be anyway. The data above is year-by-year...

Walked past Peavey Field Park last week, and was blown away by the improvements. The playground, basketball courts, and field were all pristine. The former two were being used on a Wednesday morning. The investments that the city is making in the park system are visible and impressive, especially as...

Re: Uptown Retail & Restaurant News

This conversation just reminds me how wild everyone went when someone put up fake Taco Johns announcements at the corner of LynLake. A store selling $400 jackets isn't going to bring regular activity to any neighborhood unless it's already a place people are going to spend thousands like its nothin...

Re: Star Tribune

I subscribed a while back and haven't regretted it. It's a good paper, and it's so unbelievably lucky that MSP is still served by a fully-staffed broadsheet. Some major US cities (Pittsburgh, for instance) don't even have newspapers that print seven times a week anymore. Some smaller cities (Youngst...

Re: Bus Destination Signage

Another minor point of contention I have is how much transit nerds overestimate how many different routes the average person uses on a regular basis. The vast majority of riders have limited need to understand the system as a whole. Most riders take a single route daily (or two if they transfer) to...

Re: Bus Destination Signage

And that’s pretty much the point of aBRT, right? Pick an arterial, and provide high frequency service mainly along that arterial, with no deviations. This is important, but not gospel. It is a rule that can/should be broken when it makes overwhelming sense to do so (i.e. higher ridership). The main...

One of the biggest improvements. Legibility, in transportation planning terms.

Re: Dinkytower - McDonalds redevelopment

The height I have no problem with, but the proposed building is absolutely huge in bulk. While it's nice to develop a whole area all at once, it's often not great for the urban design of the area to have one megabuilding instead of many smaller ones. Architecturally, I hope they can at least split t...

LOCKED: Rapidly growing Merrill Corp. will consolidate 350 employees in downtown Minneapolis Also worth noting that US Bank owns the Plaza building. But they do not own US Bancorp Center (800 Nicollet), which means they lack control over future rent increases. They could just be shifting people arou...
