Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors
Yeah, the E-Line obviously needs to end in Southdale. That's a must. As for the France vs Xerxes debate, I think France is the obvious choice. There are activity nodes at 44th, 50th, and 54th. The only node on Xerxes is not even on Xerxes, at 44th and Upton. While we're talking about aBRT extensions...

Re: Midtown Greenway
A new study may or may not change our understanding of the alternatives available, but it ought to provide new cost estimates (which will come way above $14 million), a fresh perspective on the issue, and most of all, will hopefully provide renewed political momentum for this vital crossing. It is s...

The attention given to the street level and the openness of the skyway level to the outside is the best part of this design. I'm glad that, with a public project, the city allowed or encouraged their design team to set an example for private developers.

If Park Liquors is redeveloped, where will underage Macalester students buy their alcohol???

Quite a bit cheaper to just make the city streets safer to cross.

Re: United Properties / Four Seasons "Gateway" Project (Nicollet Hotel Block)
The ground floor actually looks pretty good to me, although it's hard to make out much room for retail. But the form of the tower is especially disappointing, and the facade reads pretty flat in these renderings (although the problem on that front may simply be a poor quality rendering). Uninspired...

Re: Apartment Construction Boom (2011-??)
I'm counting 1518 new units, which is exciting, but 1516 parking spaces, which is disappointing. Especially considering how some of these projects (Art and Architecture, Calhoun Towers) are directly next to LRT stations, and are both providing at least 1 space per unit. This is a whale of a CoW agen...

Re: Downtown Minneapolis Office Market
A quick look at the available spaces on LoopNet shows there's a number of really attractive buildings that are Class B. Particularly 825-831 Nicollet Mall and 500-520 Nicollet Mall. They'd make for great conversions if the owners wanted to go that direction. The Medical Arts Building (825-831) woul...

(A) New housing.
(B) The design is contextual and attractive.
(C) ACME is still alive, lol.

Re: Future cars / Driverless cars
The actions of the human "driver" in this case show starkly the dangers of Level 3 automation. The human driver was complacent with the technology and lulled into thinking her car was fully autonomous. It's an understandable, probably inevitable mistake, even if she was being paid not to make it. Ub...

God forbid the Commons ever feel like Central Park or Rittenhouse Square, two of the premier urban parks in America.
Seriously, what an idiotic comment.

Re: Zoning, building codes, enforcement in the courts
It's going to be ugly visually. You'll have a lot of blocks with a mix of small hundred year old stucco bungalows and cheap looking boxy modern buildings with small setbacks and lots of corrugated metal and wood-look composite panels. I'm not trying to pick a fight here. I recognize that probably t...

Re: Eleven (Ryan Condo Tower) - 1111 West River Parkway - 39 stories / >450'
Considering that this building is supplying more than enough parking for residents and workers at Padilla and the Red Cross, they ought to completely remove the surface parking on those lots, and extend the Dinkytown Greenway trail to Gold Medal Park as Anondson and Grant suggested. That would tie t...

Re: Ryan Condo Tower - 1111 West River Parkway
I remember that there was speculation that they would replace the Padilla building. Glad to see that they are taking the surface lot instead. What excites me most about this project is that it will continue to enhance the enclosed urban feel of Gold Medal Park, leaving the C97 lot as the last park-a...

Re: New Thrivent Headquarters Building - 6th St and Portland Ave
The comparisons to the KA project are too obvious to be accidental. Clear that the KA model was seen and appreciated by Thrivent. These full-block redevelopments present a really exciting opportunity to fill gaping holes in the cityscape in a coherent, designed way. That both blocks will incorporate...

Re: Impound Lot
I would honestly, rather see them move the impound lot next to the Water Treatment plant in Fridley or etc. Does this legally even have to be in Minneapolis? I don't think we need to give prime TOD real estate to an impound lot, but yes, absolutely the impound lot has to be accessible to people who...

Re: Crime
One of the huge reasons that Hennepin Ave. feels so unloved is because, in fact, nobody loves it. It's a poorly designed street, fronted by four types of uses, theaters, clubs, mega restaurants, and surface parking lots, that are not consistently in use and have little investment in the street prese...

Re: Oslo, Norway (my home away from home)
I studied in Oslo in 2011, and didn't know they were planning on doing the whole Hot Wheels loop-da-loop with the T-Bane map. Of course, that's still how it used to work, but it was conceptualized as two lines with the #4 becoming the #6, . I'm not sure what is gained by combining them into a single...
