Re: Metro Transit Service Improvement Plan 2014

Metro Transit updated the SIP in 2017 and has uploaded the latest version recently. The updates are minor, mostly removing services already implemented and modifying transitway-related proposals based on those planning efforts. Also implementation dates have been modified. The routes that have recei...

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

The added 535 service will only run every 30 minutes on Saturday, which is below the high frequency threshold. Same for the 54 extension.

Additionally, the 15-minute weekday frequency on the 535 will only be between 76th/Knox to Downtown.

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT) & Lake St Transit Access Project

The idea would involve little to no new construction. The Orange Line Extension planning process has been assuming utilizing the existing station at 167th/Kenrick. The issue with the extension is that it will require an additional 5 buses (Phase 1 will use 10 buses), which is a significant operation...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

I think that Xerxes lends itself to being more suitable for BRT than France. France has the retail node at 50th, but is generally less dense.

Re: Orange Line (35W BRT) & Lake St Transit Access Project

The extension update from Dakota County has two interesting points. 1. Study will be delayed as the City of Burnsville launches planning work in the mall area. 2. Uncomfort with Kenrick Ave ridership estimates (and availability of peak-hour express service) push this station out of short-term consid...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

Metro Transit has launched B and E Line pages.

The E Line will be studied for University/4th and "south of Lake St" extensions this year also.

Re: Blue Line (Hiawatha LRT)

I believe one of the very early models for the Hiawatha line (1980s) presumed airport access along Hwy 5 with a spur along the airport road, similar to the Route 54 operation.

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Metro Transit has been moving towards more frequent, smaller orders. In recent years they have been getting 10-15 every year or two.

The oldest artics are 15 high floor (New Flyer D60) models from 2006.

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

I'd imagine that there are a few Phantoms left in service, the last order was delivered in 2004.

There is a new contract out for bid. Includes 158 buses with 95 options for 2019-2023.

There should be an articulated contract soon also, the oldest are from 2006.

That's going to leave Northtown with only a Best Buy and a Burlington Coat Factory as anchors. Leaves Macy's as the only anchor at Southdale too. FWIW, the current locations are: Midway St. Paul Rosedale - previously announced closure Southdale Northtown Southtown - previously announced closure Stil...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

FWIW, this is just a map of the original study, plus the A extension study, and the former B (W 7th) removed. It's entirely possible that the E get a full review, and likely makes sense with the Green Line and Orange Line opening in a similar timeframe.

Re: Hennepin Avenue Reconstruction / E Line (Uptown to Downtown)

The layout shows three "E Line" stops along Hennepin, at Franklin, 25th, and Uptown TC. The rapid bus study from 2011 recommended 24th and 26th, although I suppose there is plenty of time to change the locations.

Hopefully the E Line can start when the construction wraps up in 2023!

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Stations (especially for subways) will always be a big expense, because usually they require creating a massive pit in the ground for build out, whereas tunneling is much less disruptive (provided TBMs are used)

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

The main difference is the cost to purchase. The minibuses are usually under $100,000, while the 29' buses are around $300-400,000 each. I don't have figures off hand, but the minibus is quite a bit more fuel efficient. Lastly, minibuses are designed for six year lives, while the 29' bus is designed...

Re: Red Line (Cedar Avenue BRT)

An extension north to Minneapolis would reduce the trip time by approximately 15-20 minutes, as well as eliminate the transfer penalty.

Maybe it would be worthwhile to run every other trip north as a test to see how well it would perform. Would be nice during 35w construction as well

Re: C Line - Penn Avenue North Arterial Rapid Bus

The H branch is currently an all day service (hourly), so those riders would see a service cut. I'd imagine that off peak ridership is pretty low, though.

Re: C Line - Penn Avenue North Arterial Rapid Bus

Interesting. Would be quite logical to keep the branch that ends at 42nd and York and extend to Robbinsdale, although I believe that service was complained about enough to the the point that MT eliminated it. Otherwise, Option A looks good, IMO. Shame that it is only being considered at peak, but I ...
