Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Metro Transit has been moving towards more frequent, smaller orders. In recent years they have been getting 10-15 every year or two.

The oldest artics are 15 high floor (New Flyer D60) models from 2006.

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

I'd imagine that there are a few Phantoms left in service, the last order was delivered in 2004.

There is a new contract out for bid. Includes 158 buses with 95 options for 2019-2023.

There should be an articulated contract soon also, the oldest are from 2006.

That's going to leave Northtown with only a Best Buy and a Burlington Coat Factory as anchors. Leaves Macy's as the only anchor at Southdale too. FWIW, the current locations are: Midway St. Paul Rosedale - previously announced closure Southdale Northtown Southtown - previously announced closure Stil...

Re: Arterial Bus Rapid Transit Corridors

FWIW, this is just a map of the original study, plus the A extension study, and the former B (W 7th) removed. It's entirely possible that the E get a full review, and likely makes sense with the Green Line and Orange Line opening in a similar timeframe.

Re: Hennepin Avenue Reconstruction / E Line (Uptown to Downtown)

The layout shows three "E Line" stops along Hennepin, at Franklin, 25th, and Uptown TC. The rapid bus study from 2011 recommended 24th and 26th, although I suppose there is plenty of time to change the locations.

Hopefully the E Line can start when the construction wraps up in 2023!

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

Stations (especially for subways) will always be a big expense, because usually they require creating a massive pit in the ground for build out, whereas tunneling is much less disruptive (provided TBMs are used)

Re: Public Transit News and Current Happenings

The main difference is the cost to purchase. The minibuses are usually under $100,000, while the 29' buses are around $300-400,000 each. I don't have figures off hand, but the minibus is quite a bit more fuel efficient. Lastly, minibuses are designed for six year lives, while the 29' bus is designed...

Re: Red Line (Cedar Avenue BRT)

An extension north to Minneapolis would reduce the trip time by approximately 15-20 minutes, as well as eliminate the transfer penalty.

Maybe it would be worthwhile to run every other trip north as a test to see how well it would perform. Would be nice during 35w construction as well

Re: C Line - Penn Avenue North Arterial Rapid Bus

The H branch is currently an all day service (hourly), so those riders would see a service cut. I'd imagine that off peak ridership is pretty low, though.

Yes, that and it's a residential street with no history of bus service.

Re: C Line - Penn Avenue North Arterial Rapid Bus

Interesting. Would be quite logical to keep the branch that ends at 42nd and York and extend to Robbinsdale, although I believe that service was complained about enough to the the point that MT eliminated it. Otherwise, Option A looks good, IMO. Shame that it is only being considered at peak, but I ...

Re: Gold Line BRT (Gateway Corridor)

Not sure; but it seems silly to have the buses terminate at Union Depot non-peak. They really should run the Gold Line through downtown for other bus connections and just have an on-street stop connection to the Green Line at Central or Union Depot stations.

Re: Los Angeles

LA has been experimenting with all-door boarding on some of their busiest Rapid bus lines. The Silver Line was changed to TAP card only recently as well. LA has been losing tons of bus riders - mostly because bus speeds have been falling, and service has mostly seen cuts over the past couple decades...

Interesting that no connections are envisioned across the light rail tracks. Really disconnects from anything to be built at the Kelley Farm or other nearby parcels.

Most Amtrak operations are funded by state DOTs. The exceptions are the long distance trains. Amtrak (as the national rail provider) has protections like prioritization in exchange for taking over operations from the private companies. There are some operations that are arguably Intercity that are o...

Here's MT's webpage about 35W and Lake St: https://www.metrotransit.org/35w

- Detours to start in June
- Added service to all 35W routes
- Lake St stops (on 1st and Blaisdell) will only be served by the 535 and the reverse-commute trips of the 578 and 597.

Re: Street, Road and Highway Projects

IIRC, the I-94 MnPass plan is for a mix of new and converted lanes. The segment between Dowling and 4th St will be converted, while the segment north of Dowling is mostly new lanes. I'm surprised about the 252 MnPass lane, but it makes sense because MnDot is proceeding with the freeway upgrade. The ...
