Re: Nicollet Hotel Block

Tallest equals neither best nor most beautiful. I'm not opposed to the Duval proposal, but I'm not ready to jump on the bandwagon just because it would reach 80 stories. From where I stand (quite literally), I believe that how a building relates to the street and its surroundings is much more import...

Re: Intercity rail to Chicago

I posted the following message amid the discussion of airport noise at MSP. I never got a response, which indicates either that my thought is kinda dumb or that nobody saw it. I'm still curious, though, so I'm moving my comment to this thread. Can any of you explain a)why my thought is dumb or b)if ...

Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium

Slated for 2015: http://www.minneapolismn.gov/cip/all/WCMS1P-121854 Yep, I get that. My point was just that there are a lot of changes moving forward simultaneously in this area, and we shouldn't be surprised if one plan hasn't yet fully digested the impacts of another plan. This is all still from ...

Re: Minnesota Multi Purpose Stadium

Those documents are, what, over a year and a half old? A fair amount has changed in that time, including the official confirmation that the ramp from 5th Street will be closed. I haven't seen any updates that supersede this, but I'd have to assume that they're working on them. Slated for 2015: http...

Re: MSP Airport

As someone very much affected by airport noise, I still believe that the airport should not be moved. Even if politically possible, I think the billions this would cost would be an unwise use of public funds, given all that could be accomplished alternatively. Among these alternative things might be...

Re: MSP Airport

Delta retired its DC-9s, but it continues to fly 717s, which are essentially DC-9s manufactured by Boeing after it took over McDonnell Douglas. Also, I believe that other airlines continue to fly DC-9s. In any case, when I hear that awful roar, I look up and know that I'll see that familiar twin-eng...

Re: MSP Airport

We live near Cedar and Minnehaha Parkway, and the takeoffs are definitely noisier than the landings. The planes taking off might be somewhat higher, but they're at full throttle! That said, I think a huge part of the noise problem will be solved when the last of the DC-9s disappear. They roar rather...

Re: Western Container Building - 500 3rd Street North

"Nefarious" is too strong a word. The reason for the work stoppage could be innocuous. Still, Ned Abdul is not a man who passes quietly through the world, and I wouldn't be surprised if the explanation carries something interesting enough to merit a little exploration. Thanks for pointing me toward ...

This is a follow-up to my last post on this thread, which apparently has done little to pique the curiosity of all you development junkies. Here's a link that describes what I thought was going on: http://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/blog/real_estate/2014/03/after-supreme-court-verdict-ned-abdul-r...

Re: Western Container Building - 500 3rd Street North

From my going about on errands the last week or two, this project has the appearance of nothing happening. A hiccup or bigger problems? I'm only asking because this building has taken on the air of mystery. This is how it has become jumbled up in my mind: rejection of plans by HPC, someone else taki...

Hurrah for this project! Housing at this price level is always so sorely needed, and especially with such great access to transportation it's essential to the health of the city.

Re: Andrews Hotel site (4th & Hennepin)

The color of one bland facade sorta matches the color of the Library. The color of the other bland facade sorta matches the color of the Lumber Exchange. This insincere nod to context is more painful than doing nothing at all. The lack of height relationships to the Lumber Exchange is a big problem,...

Re: Tri-Tech Building

Yeah, I know that they've been there for ages and that generators are necessary. However, I haven't seen any others downtown so oppressively placed. Where do they usually go? Rooftops? Behind walls with only the end of the vents showing? Would current zoning allow generators to be placed right next ...

Tri-Tech Building

This is probably less of a topic than a question that I otherwise see no place to put. Are those big, ugly machines located in what used to be a drive thru area generators? They're ugly as sin and have exhaust ducts aiming directly over the sidewalk. How did something like that get approved? Would c...

Re: 2320 Colfax Avenue Apartments

David, you've beautifully stated your views on what it takes to fulfill preservationist goals and where the grey areas loom for even those most dedicated to them. Though some in the pro-Healy House group will be too set on their position to acknowledge the grey, perhaps there are some in it who'd re...

Re: Downtown Office Market

I can't look at that building at 330 S. 2nd (one of the blandest in the city) without feeling sad about the loss of the Metropolitan, which stood where the north end of 330 now bores the crap out of us. Of course, what's done is done and this has nothing to do with a good business expansion, but I'm...

Re: Stanton Condo Building - 516 S. 8th St.

Mr. Stanton hates curves, and he dislikes angles and setbacks almost as much. A box is the cheapest thing to build. His buildings are bland, but the level of interior finish is generally excellent. His buildings are much nicer to look from than to look at. This formula allows him to build projects t...

Re: The Marshall - (515 14th Avenue Southeast)

The passage through the building is open. It approximately follows the route of 13th Ave. between 5th and 6th streets, and I found it disappointing. The southern section is a narrow sidewalk squeezed between the building and reserved parking spaces. Since these spaces are open to the sky, if there w...
